Very sad news. Christ when you're a youngster all players seem old. Then you get older and your star players are the same age or younger than you. You get older still and suddenly you would be considered a veteran and you're old enough to have fathered some of your players! But when players you watched and who aren't much older than you die...that's just crazy. RIP Darren.
When Darren burst on to the scene at Charlton both as a youth team player and then in the senior squad he became my favourite player. It was perfect for me that he was part of the side that saw us come home in 1992 as for me, he embodied the fighting spirit of the club at that time.
When he left in 94 I was so angry, because firstly it was reported that he had taken a swipe at us for not being a big enough club for him and secondly he went to a place that had almost been responsible for our demise as a club.
I confess to letting that anger be known to all and sundry.
Last season Darren was a guest at the 'Back to the Valley' Q and A and I was lucky enough to be asked to assist in the event. He made a point of letting everyone know that the stuff attributed to him when he left wasn't true and that he still loved 'this' club, he was genuinely shaking and had tears in his eyes as he said it.
I made a point of going up to him afterwards, shaking his hand and told him that if what he said was true, I was sorry for being one of the fans that vented my anger towards him.
In light of todays terrible news I am so glad that I did.
RIP Darren, thanks for the happy memories and once again, Sorry!
