I sneakily watched the highlights on Sky again this morning - and they have omitted the 2+4 ball - i mean, wtf - this was probably one of the most crucial moments of the game !

I watched them last night to show my missus that incident and they didn't show it! It was on C4 highlights though.
Strangely, its shown on the Sky Bite size show.

Focus now switches to The Ashes, which leads to the questions of should Archer and Roy be in the team?
For me Roy im not convinced but Archer is a must - thing is, who does he replace? Broad?
Can see bowling unit of Jimmy,Archer,Broad,Woakes and Ali with Stokes as 6th or do we go with an extra batter?
Given that Stokes, Woakes and Ali can all bat and we don't have strong options batting anyway, I tend to agree.  Stokes might almost be a specialist bat given his injury issues.

Harsh on Curran though, thought he was superb last summer.

Curran got 6-95 today against Australia A (and is 32 not out batting), that's a statement of intent!

The act was the ball hitting the player, by which time they'd not only crossed but got home.

No let up for the players now, straight back to Test and domestic T20 cricket! They could probably do with a break, but the Ireland test starts next Wednesday!

It'll be interesting who is picked for that match, as while many of the players need a break, they also quickly need to get back into red ball cricket before the Ashes so need the matches

Archer is surely nailed on for the Ashes.
You've got an ageing Anderson and Broad. I always thought we were going to struggle to replace those two. Then bang! Archers on the scene. He must play.

Roy I'm not so sure. He really struggled yesterday in conditions that resembled a test wicket.
Might not be his game but he does deserve a chance.

To be fair there were very few batsmen that looked at home on that pitch yesterday. Add the pressure of the WC final too and it makes sense a lot of players couldn’t score.

I would still back Roy over anything else we have.

That was honestly the first time I've watched cricket properly aged 43, well, I watched England's last 20 overs. Bearing in mind my dad would watch a full 5 day test regardless who is playing when I was a kid.
Got a mate who calls me uneducated cause I think Cricket is boring and he has been trying to get me to go for years.
I respectfully whattsapped him at the end as didn't want to call and ruin his moment and simply said 'Wow, cricket finally gets a personality, I enjoyed that last 20 overs and fully expect my money back if we do finally go and it's less boring than that'.
Get yourself down to an England ODI at Lords or the Oval one day. It’s a great day out.

I think they have to go with Archer along with Broad and Anderson to signal the start of a new generation. Plus I still like Woakes in the red ball team and would prefer him over Wood, otherwise the batting tail gets too long.

Would also give Roy a chance. Given the recent track record of Jennings and James Vince, Roy deserves a shot in the test team.

Jimmy is injured. Broad has been unexceptional for Notts this season, it'll be very interesting which bowlers they choose for the Ireland Test, especially if any of the WC squad have injury/fatugue issues

Unforgettable game.  Watched the highlights again last night, slightly less bleary eyed.

The Ross Taylor lbw was a bad decision but all part of the game.  Not quite so sure about the “6 not 5“ decision which has been well canvassed on here.  All credit to Kane and the boys, not a word of complaint.

Now they have to re-group for a tour of Sri Lanka in a couple of weeks.

We have had some mediocre batsman fail multiple times in tests, but the one day successes don't get a 2nd chance. Malan, Westley, Stoneman FFS! For instance Roy and Morgan for 2 and 5. Trickier with bowlers. I'd say Jimmie & Broad have the shirt to lose.

Harsh on broad but would personally go with Ali at 7, Curran at 8, Woakes at 9, Archer at 10 and Jimmy at 11. Got swing, pace and left arm variations in that attack.

Batsman wise, no idea but would probably go Root 3, Bairstow 4, Stokes 5 and Buttler 6. I would happily have Roy in the test team but not above 5.

Root refuses to bat at 3 - which is one of the reasons we will end up, once again, with three inexperienced bats up top. If he would relent then Foakes could come in to keep and at 7 to lengthen the batting but we would need to drop a seamer or Ali - we would have Stokes in addition to the 4 bowlers anyway (plus Root if things really got desperate).

Roy will be in the Test team against Ireland next week and will play at least the first two Ashes Tests. Smith and Bayliss have both said as much. Agreed he doesn't look totally convincing against the moving ball but he must be a better bet than the likes of Vince.

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/2019/07/15/ecb-has-cunning-plan-build-50-over-crickets-newfound-popularity/

Complete farce that the domestic 50 over competition will be completely marginalised by the 100 next season. Played at the same time and reduced to a micky mouse competition for younger players

It's not as if 50 overs skills can just be honed in T20 matches, being able to pace an innings is something that T20 matches don't allow.

I offered my friend 5/2 when we were 2/1 to win the tournament before Sri Lanka.

I offered my friend 5/2 when we lost the next game also.

He took 5/2 last Thursday when we were still 2/1.

I have won £100.   Never have I felt more confident I was going to win money.

England have beaten teams that don't really care for the last 4 years.  We have NEVER won the world cup and haven't beaten Australia, NZ and India in a World Cup for a very, very, very, very long time.

England in May and June.  Bound to rain.   Tracks bound to swing and move about a bit.

Absolutely no way is our batting line up good enough to win a World Cup.

I’m 1.8k comments behind on this thread and this was the last post I’d read @supaclive :-)
I've paid him already @AFKABartram At least we won the damn thing to ease the pain!

You have to go with your best team at the time.

I see there are still rumblings for NZ about how the final should be "drawn" and we share the trophy.

Apart from the fact that everyone knew the rules & signed up to them before the competition started, would someone care to point out the following to the disgruntled black caps:

If the "decider" went on a head to head basis then England would have won, based on the fact we beat them in the group stage.

If the "decider" went on net run rate in the final table then England would have won

If the "decider" went on the final places in the table then England would have won, being 3rd to their 4th.

Jeez............how many times do we need to have won the bloody thing  !!!

Wow, Charlton win promotion at Wembley and England win the World Cup at Lords.
Life doesn't get much better for a sports fan like me.
Completely agree, probably the best summer of sports  in my lifetime with those two and think of the contrast from 3 years ago when it felt like all the teams we cared about were at a real low.

Summer 2016- Charlton relegated with the club an absolute mess from top to bottom, England cricket lose the T20 final in heartbreaking fashion, England football suffer most embarrassing defeat in decades v Iceland in Euros.

Summer 2019- Charlton promoted again with 94th min winner at Wembley, England cricket win WC final in greatest ever match, England football on rise again having reached first semi since 1990.

The way New Zealand have lost though certainly feels worse than any penalty shootout in Footballl

Surely wickets should come ahead of boundaries
Yep, all about encouraging attacking play. Cricket's equivalent of the away goals rule. If it achieves what it's supposed to, it's a good thing. If it doesn't, it's a bit of a joke. Either way everyone knew the rules from the outset. Well done England, hard luck New Zealand.

Surprised that the peak viewing figure for the final on Sunday across both Sky & Channel 4 was only 7.9M, would have expected much more?

Cricket isn't as popular as football, for example.

Plus the tennis was on, it was a nice summer's day etc etc
