I agree they are probably not a headline act for Glasto and they've never been a band to get the crowd excited as such.

A bit like Kings of Leon, they just play and the fans tend to stand, listen & sing along, rather than going crazy.

I have to say they made a strange selection of not well known songs tonight, unlike when I've seen them & they've played 3 hours of non stop hits.
Apart from the love cats, I’m struggling to recall which ‘hits’ they didn’t play ?
Apart from Love Cats I am struggling to recall any of their hits
Just looked at their Greatest Hits album and also no Boys Don’t Cry and Friday I’m in Love.

They must be the headliner of the last 20 years  I have had the least exposure to.
According to the setlist I found on Twitter above they didn't play The Lovecats?
  • I saw them headline in 1990, they were superb although can see they’re not everyone’s cup of tea.
  • Kylie was singing over her records a lot of the time, which I always find poor form.
I can never take someone seriously, if they are not capable of actually singing live.
100% this...cricket was good bye the way.

They did both of those !!

Whilst Robert Smith looks revolting he sounds perfect as do the band full stop. They aren't everyones cup of tea but I like them and they are delivering a very professional show. I'm also happy people expecting some radio friendly pop act are having a bit of an education (or are turning the tv off and giving it a kick for good measure!)

My missus just said it was better with Ed Sheeran headlining so I have just stared at her with disgust for 5 minutes
Not a Cure fan but thought they were pretty good, agree re Robert Smith...sounded really good....even if he didn't look so good.
  • Looks like The Cure saved all the ones you have heard of for the encore. I am of the opinion that if you are a band that has had a number of hits and you are asked to play at a festival, you should play all those hits, and spread them around your set. The audience are always an eclectic mix and are mostly not interested in the "one from our new album". By all means play the entire new album if you are at a gig where the crowd are specifically there to see you, otherwise do what you have been paid to do, and entertain the plebs...
Paul Weller can be a fucker for that, I've seen him live a lot and what songs you get depend greatly on what side of the bed he got out of that morning.

You always play the hits, in The Cures case a lot of their music was fairly niche when it was released and I don't know many people who could list more than say 3 Cure songs. That then gives them a problem as they do have some really good tracks but those tracks havent necessarily had a lot of joy on the radio, certainly for the last 20 years.

I make you right though, they should or could have spread the biggies out and still finished with Friday I'm in Love or Boys don't cry. Like I said last night, I thought musically and vocally they were perfect but they shouldn't have started with a slow one.

Kylie smashing it. Same age as me total teenage crush.
LOL...Gave her 5 mins and now I'm back listening to the cricket.
There’s no way you’d give her 5 minutes mate.
More to the point, there’s no way she’d give Hastings 5 seconds let alone 5 minutes!
She's doing Brighton Pride, so had to give us a miss.

Indeed that's why as a fan of a band I'd rather see them in their own show rather than at a festival, as at the festival they will usually play the hits you've heard 1000 times already rather than the more interesting album tracks etc that would be more enjoyable for me.
    Absolutely K&F.

  • Last time The Cure headlined
What a cracking lineup that is. What really stands out are the number of "current" acts playing rather than people past their peak. That NME stage alone would be worth the admission price

Thankfully he didn't sound like one.

The Cure are a brilliant reminder of what Glastonbury used. Proper musicians playing their songs with no gimmicks. They have earned the right to play what they play in whatever order they want. I turned on the tv earlier in the day to see Kylie ‘doing’ the fucking locomotion for god sakes !!
Yeah you are correct, they have done enough in their career to do whatever they like, like Weller to be honest. I enjoyed them hugely last night doing their thing however if I had a pound for every time Weller would finish one of his more experimental records then if he was deciding to talk to the audience this is, he would announce he was going to do a another b-side from one of his latest singles you can hear an audible groan from those around apart from the real Weller nutters who would love him singing the theme tune from the muppets and care not for him doing a town called malice or beat surrender.

You wouldn't want to be exposed to Robert Smith.
  • I have no knowledge of her or her music but thought that Miley Cyrus did an entertaining set.
  • That song Billy Cyrus did about a horse was the best song i heard of all of the coverage i saw.
  • she absolutely slaughtered the Amy Winehouse track she did

Killing an Arab, Let's go to Bed, Charlotte Sometimes, Love Cats, (A Letter to Elise, The 13th, Mint Car, The End of The World)
  • I thought Cure were OK, if you're really into them, that was an amazing set, if you're neutral, a bit meh

I think ultimately The Cure isn't the type of band that cheers you up. There are a few great singles before the encore such as Lovesong, Fascination Street, Pictures of You but most of the songs aren't the sort you can dance to. I'm not a fan of Robert Smith's makeup (never have been) and can see why some of you think he looks ridiculous.

Are you being serious or just joking?😂 Judging from the responses to The Cure on here I doubt many are familiar with those "hits".
  • I can't decide if Kylie was overwhelmed with the event, size of the crowd, memories of 14 years ago; or whether she couldn't quite believe she was getting that reception while suffering awful sound and "tuning" issues.
That performance looked tremendous but sounded dreadful, even with all the production and sync'ed BV's, shame.

Was a Nickelback track wasn’t it?

A day that Alex will always remember, if he can remember.
    Love that.
    Shame he was a plant
How was it ? He pulls someone out of the crowd at all his gigs.
  • Robert Smith reminded me of the guy in Death in Venice (Mahler) after his make up. Quite surreal at times but RS is a brilliant front man. I think if I knew the lyrics and was amongst it Immersed in the sound at Glastonbury then it would have been excellent. But at times I was wishing the song would change to the more familiar ones.
Cyrus was good and so was Mavis. I enjoyed Kylie with nick cave then switched over.

Nope but i suppose it sounded similar-ish.
