Mike Skinner is a performer, if I'm not mistaken that is Rob Harvey from The Music playing guitar for him too. They were an incredible band, I saw them a few times and came out absolutely exhausted every time and buzzing
The Streets were a highlight for me. Loved his crowd surfing and the womans face in the crowd when Mike said he recognised her from Instagram.
The Music is a blast from the past. I loved them. That 1st album i still listen too. And you are correct it was Harvey on stage i believe

I think ultimately The Cure isn't the type of band that cheers you up. There are a few great singles before the encore such as Lovesong, Fascination Street, Pictures of You but most of the songs aren't the sort you can dance to. I'm not a fan of Robert Smith's makeup (never have been) and can see why some of you think he looks ridiculous.

I agree they are probably not a headline act for Glasto and they've never been a band to get the crowd excited as such.

A bit like Kings of Leon, they just play and the fans tend to stand, listen & sing along, rather than going crazy.

I have to say they made a strange selection of not well known songs tonight, unlike when I've seen them & they've played 3 hours of non stop hits.
Apart from the love cats, I’m struggling to recall which ‘hits’ they didn’t play ?
Killing an Arab, Let's go to Bed, Charlotte Sometimes, Love Cats, (A Letter to Elise, The 13th, Mint Car, The End of The World)
Are you being serious or just joking?😂 Judging from the responses to The Cure on here I doubt many are familiar with those "hits".
I would have thought all Cure fans know the first 4. The 4 in brackets 'charted' I think, but aren't well known.

That song Billy Cyrus did about a horse was the best song i heard of all of the coverage i saw.
Was a Nickelback track wasn’t it?
I was worried that achey brakey shit was coming so made a pleasant surprise lol

Nope but i suppose it sounded similar-ish.
    Well that’s a worry.
I knew the words & just assumed it was a cover.
I’m not owning up to Hubby, I’ll never live it down :-

His dancing was awesome, they had some very dirty guitar riffs that worked really well. I don't remember dancing as much at any other shows than The Music. The first album was a peach, as was the second. Think it got a bit too much for him after that.

I can't think of many frontmen, who had as much about them as Rob Harvey yet got as little recognition

I never got to see them live. Had a ticket to see them at Brixton but due to family emergency had to give it up. Would of really enjoyed jumping about to "The People" live.

    Love that.
    Shame he was a plant
How was it ? He pulls someone out of the crowd at all his gigs.
    Thought it was Johnny Sexton.
  • Not personally seen them live, but Jungle always look decent.

Cure fans yes must know all those songs. Just wouldn't go down well with the audience at Glastonbury though I guess.

Saw them at the roundhouse a couple of years back. Quality.

So seems this is something Dave does at most of his gigs, and this lad knew it and is a massive fan, and went dressed for success, credit to lad for absolutely nailing it
  • I watched late last night as I always do.

    Sleaford Mods.

    What the feck?

    The world has gone.
Seen them live about a dozen times, love them!

The streets are supremely underrated. Every album did something different and had a style/purpose he was going for. Great live. People write him off because of tabloid shite. But without him and dizzee rascal we wouldn’t have artists like stormzy, and other artists that sing with their accents like arctic monkeys.

and rob Harvey has been a band member for a while. The did a side project called THE D.O.T which was a series of songs released on YouTube, more like a scrapbook releases as there’s some absolute gold in there. But a lot of experimental rubbish.
  • My thoughts on what I saw on the telly:

Killers a bit flat in the middle, the big hits were done well, Brandon can’t really sing so getting in four backing singers was a good decision, Pet Shop Boys and Marr were great guests.

    Can’t stand Kylie’s and Janet Jackson’s music.

    Maverick Sabre is still class.

Robert Smith has learnt how to smile, but then with The Cure he’s got a lot to smile about.

The woman with red hair, Freya Riding or something like that, was very good and I’d like to see her live.

Mate, I don't think the streets invented British bands with regional accents, Indie bands have doing that for decades

Well, as you just said, that was indie bands. Skinner broke that through into the mainstream.

Going back the likes of Slade definitely used their regional accents. Or The Worzels  :D

Ha, I was just about to post I give you Slade, but thought it wasn't worth the bother.
It's ridiculous to assert The Streets were responsible for artists singing with regional accents.
I could come up with loads of bands singing with regional accents before The Streets, but I'll leave it at The Proclaimers.
NB The Proclaimers weren't responsible for the accents of The Streets or Arctic Monkeys.

I guess you’re all experts in British hip hop pre the streets.

I guess you were all also happy with spice girls and pop music being dominated by people singing with an American accent.

No idea why you said that, because no one else did.

Well I never said no one ever sang with their accents before the streets, I’m saying the pop scene at the time wasn’t dominated by British sounding artists like it was after the streets.

I also said “I guess” which usually means that I’m guessing your opinion. But I guess we’ve already established reading literacy isn’t your strong suit.
  • Mike Skinner is still great. Went to go see him last year at the Brixton academy as his end of European tour gig. Eff knows what he started on but on stage he had 4 pints and two bottles of champagne at least.

oh yeah he also encouraged the crowd to spark up their joints and roll new ones because what were security going to do really if everyone was at it.

Haven’t been at a gig inside and that full of weed for many years. Wish I’d had the day booked off after as there was plenty of partying going on.

    Proper decent.

He puts on his own after parties at another venue called 'tonga balloon parties'

Even with my poor reading literacy, I just saw your cheeky little insult added 23 mins later. Well played.

It was good to see The Cure at Glastonbury.
They are one of those bands like Def Leppard and Depeche Mode that achieved more in the USA than in the UK.

Are there any USA bands that achieved more in the UK than the US.

The Killers? At least equally popular in both countries it seems?
