Adam Matthews is absolutely class. Decent runs, good at one on ones and his composure is incredible. I hope we can snap him up long term, he isn't a short term solution to right back imo, that's his for the taking.
Doughty is going to be one heck of a player, his burst of pace is unreal at times and he is growing with confidence. Capable of playing every position down that left and makes the squad despite injuries, must get his contract on good terms to avoid a big club snapping him up.
Lastly Lockyer, his contract is out next season and based on what I have seen of him we need to also get him on a proper contract, he could he our right sided CB for years to come, apart from the one mistake he made yesterday (which he made up for) I thought he had a fairly decent game. With the euros coming up and him having a spot in that Wales XI, he would only have to have a couple of decent games on that stage to get interest. I would make him club captain now and offer him a good contract with fair clauses, realty taken to him
Other than that everyone had a fairly decent game, big shout outs to Oshi for having a steady game and Naby for making the hero tackle when he was having a shaky game.
Nice to sit in the north and feel a decent home atmosphere
The ball was going in before the keeper touched it and went in after he touched it.
Technically, the keeper saved the header by pushing it onto the post. With a slightly different angle it would have come out. It didn’t, it hit him and went in. Definite OG
The ball was going in before the keeper touched it and went in after he touched it.
Exactly this. The keeper had a chance to save it, he couldn't do this properly as the header was to good, and the ball found its way into the net. Lockyer's goal all day long for me.
That’s not actually true though, he did save the header.
If I was one of their fans I'd be furious. They are clearly a good side and can play good football but they didn't. They were dirty niggly and horrible from the start. And I dont get why. They most creative player came off the bench and cause us all sorts of problems (couldn't work out who because i couldn't see the numbers on their stupid kit with thin orange numbers on yellow and green! What cretin thought that was a good idea?!) If they tried to play football they would have beaten us. Instead they came for a battle and played into our hands. It's the perfect game for the likes of Pratley, Lockyer, Deji, Gallagher (and it was good to see the likes of Green, JFC dishing a bit out too). Maybe they got dragged into it more than they wanted by the experience of Pratley winding them up? I dunno.
First half thought we gave a good account of ourselves bar the defensive mistake for the goal. Davison put himself about well and caused them problems. I likes the kinda lop-sided back 5 with Doughty often being our furthest player up the pitch but still at wing back off the ball. Green and Gallagher supported Josh well. The goal playing out from the back is a risk and you always get one or two mistakes leading to a goal each season if you play like that. But could have been avoided, Matthew's dilly-dallied on the ball too long and then gave it to Lockyer with a hell of a lot to do. Lockyer held with it terribly and tried to pass back to Dillon but under pressure simply passes it to the on rushing attacker. We didnt deal with it well from there. Deji should have gone straight to the man as Sarr was recovering behind. But he allows him to take it into the box. I really thought he'd pulled off a miracle after he blocked the first shot but wasnt to be.
We stayed in the game well and great work all round for the goal. Delighted for Josh!
Second half started with a sucker punch. And we weren't in it for a while. Gradually got a grip back on the game but the real change was when Jonny and JFC came on. Jonny and Andre (who was excellent all game) running at them terrified their back line. Bartley (and to a lesser extent Ajayi) gave it to the covered end when it was completely unnecessary for the whole time Davison was down injured. Not long later Bartley loses his man and that's the equaliser. Wonderful!
We saw it out fairly comfortably in the end. Good to see some players back, JFC impressed me and will be useful in the coming weeks. Pratley immense throughout. Real leader in the jacko mould (think Lockyer is too) proper fighter and so fit for his age. Winds them up without ever actually crossing the line himself. Doesn't have too much pace but was still the one most willing to bust a gut and get back to make the tackle as they broke near the end. Growing man love for our Dazza.
Ohh yeah. Ref was an absolute nonce. No clue what he was playing at. They could easily have had 2 reds. Completely lost control in the second half.
A word on the people around me in block M of the covered end upper.
Bloke behind me moaning every time I stood up and even grabbed me by the shoulder and tried to pull me down at one point. Like ffs you're 3/4 of the way back in the covered end everyone is standing up (I wasnt even doing it that much - the instance where he grabbed me it was as Doughty put a ball into the box!) Not sorry for telling you to fuck off. If you wanna sit down all game and aren't interested in standing when we have a chance go sit in the west stand. And before anyone asks no he didnt have mobility issues. He was jumping rows of seats perfectly fine to beat the queue to get out at half time.
And the guy to my left was vocal - which I like but had zero clue about football. Was calling Davison shit from the first minute even though he was clearly putting himself about well. Didnt even stop calling him shit after he scored! Refused to stand or even clap when he was subbed! Shouting out at the defense even when they had the ball and were directly running at us. Shouted hoof it whenever we get the ball. What so you want us to hoof it at Davison so he can battle with 2 CBs twice his size and then you can moan at him too. The guy was a fool.
So glad I wasnt sat in my season ticket seat!
Could have swapped seats with the chap. Nothing worse than the random leaper when something exciting happens so make him right. You could always give him a couple of hundred to up grade to the West if it is all getting too much for you, or of course, just fuck off to your own seat.
Calm down dear.
Can tell you're a boring old fart who doent like it when the clapping gets too loud as it disturbs his nap. Ffs.
I did offer to but he didn't want to.
Again it's most of the way back in the north upper ffs. I sat down way more than most people around me (who were standing all game) because of him. Certainly not a "random leaper" but if we are putting a ball in the box then 3 quarters of the ground are on their feet. He must have been only person in the covered end who wasnt at those moments.
The bit about the west was tongue in cheek but if you're seriously bothered about not standing up at all for the entire game you can sit towards the front of the stand or the east. It's well known the back of the covered end is where the people who want to stand go.
As for being in my own seat - I couldn't get my missus a seat next to mine today as thy had been sold so the ticket office kindly moved me across the aisle into the next block along and got her the seat next to me so we could sit together. Is that alright or do I need to ask your permission next time?
First off I apologise for using the F word and I know it is inappropriate.
I admit to be an old git, but not boring. My reaction was down to having a random leaper in front of me at the QPR game and I missed a lot. Tried to swap but he refused. Moved elsewhere second half.
I happily sit near the front of covered end. My son has the seat next to me and buggers off to the back and stands - which is what he did yesterday. Plenty of room and the stairs are used as well. Possibility?
Always difficult when it is a sell out for everyone to get the experience they want and just maybe he would have purchased a seat closer to the front if he had a choice. It is in these situations that we should try and be as considerate as possible to fellow fans. You offered to swap then fair enough. I take it all back.
I think my only criticism of yesterday brilliant performance is aimed at the covered end (sorry lads) they missed an absolutely brilliant opportunity to take the mick out of the baggies fans, it would have only taken a very minor change of words from you ain’t singing anymore (which I did hear on a few occasions) to you ain’t holding the ball anymore. Perhaps one for the future. Great atmosphere, great game, great result. Thought Davison was very good, and gave they defence a right old battle.
I still think they missed a trick by not picking up my "You're just a rubbish Arugula" chant at Romaine Sawyers.
I'm right next to the directors' box and I do tend to get some disapproving looks when I shout out things like 'ref, you c*nt' at the top of my voice.
It's football and it's all about passion ffs.
Feel a.'Me Too' movement starting.
Ever since I took my daughter to games from age 10 I told her, whatever is said at football, says at football. I call it 'football language' as it's only for use within the confines of the ground. If it offends others, then I'm sorry but it's how I vent my spleen when excited or angry. My daughter, now a trainee nurse isn't a thug or deviant because of it, but she is a whole-hearted Addick who hates the Wendiies, even more enjoyable as her bf is a Wednesday regular. I have noted bursts of laughter when I've said something expletively profound, usually aimed at the ref, akin to Mr Munro.
As for Lockyer's goal, of course it was his. Who cares what the panel says, he scored it no doubts. If it wasn't for his excellent leap and bullet header it probably wouldn't have gone in off the keeper. Can't imagine any of his teammates saying "Sorry Tom but that's not good enough"
Surely by the same logic, their goal should be a Sarr og - Phillips had it covered until Sarr diverted it into the net. And what about Bauer’s goal at Wembley?
I think, by the law, it's whether the ball was going in, regardless of whether it was touched, which the WBA goal and Bauer's at Wembley definitely were.
Not sure their second was going in, it was a low shot that Phillips seemed to have covered until Naby's intervention which put it into the top of the net.

In whose interest is it for the goal to be given as an own goal?
Lockyer - clearly not Their keeper - nope The EFL - irrelevant to them
The only possible beneficiaries are the bookies who wont have to pay out (assuming there isnt an equivalent loss from punters that put money on their keeper scoring an own goal as the last goal) and even if they did benefit, it's not in their gift.
Everyone can see that the goal would not have happened without the cross and the header. The fact that there was a small rebound should be irrelevant. To any sensible person this was and is Lockyer's goal.
If the dubious goals committee gives it as an OG, then they are, quite simply, arseholes (even if they are arseholes following the pedentry of arseholes)

Just a highly frustrating situation. He also had a seat either side he could have moved to so he wasnt directly behind me (or even further away after I swapped with my missus) but he chose not to.

No worries. I probably overreacted a bit too.
Just a highly frustrating situation. He also had a seat either side he could have moved to so he wasnt directly behind me (or even further away after I swapped with my missus) but he chose not to.
Feel like it's well known that is where people want to stand. If you wanna sit then go further forward.

'Right up' and 'own arse' are two phrases that spring to mind.
That’s because no one in the UK knows what arugula is, we call it rocket, so I’d thank you to keep your US cultural imperialism to yourself.

The ball was going in before the keeper touched it and went in after he touched it.
This for me. If the keeper wasn't there it would have gone in. The keeper actually tipped it onto the post & it rebounded off the post, hit the keeper & went in. I dont think the ball was coming out again in any case.

The Valley is an all seater stadium. We do not have safe standing areas. You seem to be blaming the guy who's view you were blocking, against club ticketing laws. You come across as an arrogant prick with a sense of entitlement.
Lol okay dear
Verified and confirmed then.
'Right up' and 'own arse' are two phrases that spring to mind.
The ball was going in before the keeper touched it and went in after he touched it.
This for me. If the keeper wasn't there it would have gone in. The keeper actually tipped it onto the post & it rebounded off the post, hit the keeper & went in. I dont think the ball was coming out again in any case.
But if the keeper tipped it onto the post, it come out and went in off a defender, it would be an OG. I can’t see how this is any different.
I suppose the difference is whether you want to give the goal to Lockyer or not. I think if another player is involved it sort of changes things. But if a keeper gets a touch to a goalbound shot that goes in, it isn't considered an own goal so I son't think there is too much of a leap to say Lockyer's goal was his. If you desire to.

But did the ball "come out" once it hit the post. The keeper tried to save it.....got fingertips to it which pushed if onto the post. It then hit him & goes in. If it hadnt of hit him it might have gone in anyway.
An OG should be for players who either strike it directly (like Naby at Wembley) or if a shot is off target the ball hits them & goes in. Not if a ball strikes them on the way in.

Technically, the keeper saved the header by pushing it onto the post. With a slightly different angle it would have come out. It didn’t, it hit him and went in. Definite OG

Lockyer - clearly not
Their keeper - nope
The EFL - irrelevant to them
The only possible beneficiaries are the bookies who wont have to pay out (assuming there isnt an equivalent loss from punters that put money on their keeper scoring an own goal as the last goal) and even if they did benefit, it's not in their gift.
