  • Best wishes Dan and Family

I think in my heart of hearts my dad left at the best time now as he wouldnt have known the shit storm at the club and he would be having absolute kittens over the grandchildren with the way of the world at the moment.

Its a funny thing to say but hope you enjoyed the day, I did in the end and felt I gave my dad the best send off I could give, Im sure you feel the same.

    Speak soon D

Spent this morning sorting just some of Les' programme collection.

The museum is very grateful to @Elthamaddick for letting the museum have them.

    Here's just a selection.

  • Les was a well known “Charlton face” RIP Les.

I've got that England vs Hungary programme, mint condition.  Meant to be worth a few bob - maybe £50? I have the ticket to the match too.

    RIP
  • I see Les was at Wembley for one of, if not the greatest, performances by an international team on our shores - from The Magnificent Magyars! That 6-3 defeat and the subsequent 7-1 thrashing of England six months later by that side helped to revolutionise football here. Although when my Dad arrived here, two years later from Hungary, clubs were still training without a football!!

Thanks @Elthamaddick  for these and that reminder of my Dad who introduced me to Charlton when I was four and who sadly passed away himself a couple of years ago.

I think all the members of the Charlton 'A' team shown against Bexley United (formerly Bexleyheath and Welling) made at least one first team appearance bar Hills, Elliott (Ray not Paul) and R Dawe.

Elliott did play league football for Exeter along with Keeley.

Note Billy Bonds at centre half! He was a right back in our first team before West Ham stole him!

No doubt you'll be aware of this, match tickets can be worth quite a bit.

A pleasure to see them go somewhere where they’ll be appreciated. The museum has had about half the collection so far - will get the rest over the next few weeks and drop them down

  • H F C Haarlem V Charlton Athletic

The famous Barry Hughes was the trainer of Haarlem as any DUTCHMAN will tell you.

As a man born in London i have had Barry Hughes chucked at me so many times i have loss count.

What you have not heard of Barry Hughes ,well i know how you feel.

He was a famous footballer in England don,t you know.

Check him out he played for WBA YOUTH TEAM,had to laugh and he is welsh .

Famous as a singer over here also.

Les Turner now that is a famous englishman.

Good programme by the way, lucky man.
  • The team photo is of Haarlem and Barry Hughes is first left back row.

probably not too hard to get comps for a Tuesday night game at Burnley in a relegation season.

We lost 1 - 3 in front of just under 10k

But the strangest is item was this charity greyhound meeting.

We were going to recycle it but checked inside and saw that there was a five a side tournament either side of a police motorcycle display.

    Two questions:

Why aren't local side QPR playing at one of their old grounds?

    What was the result?

Christ he had some stuff eh ;)

    that’s all of it now
  • I thought I had been at that 5-a-side tournament but when I checked my programme it was the year before for the Met Police at White City (and Charlton won that one).

    He sure did.

I'm not even into programmes but it was great fun looking for the rare and unusual stuff.

That was a strong Charlton side. Does Keith Peacock remember it I wonder?
  • I've attached (I hope) the programme photo as requested. Don't know how many years this went on for but 5 &6 a-side were very popular in the sixties and seventies.
