I can see a few pubs and restaurants opening and then closing a few weeks later as it won't be worth their while.

Most of our restaurant clients up town aren’t opening until September earliest. They need to run at 70% minimum to make any money.
Can see the logic behind 70%. But note others like Hawksmoor are opening in the week. What’s the difference in business model that allows this or is it simply a difference of opinions as to what’s viable?
Just different business models , a lot of pubs are tenancies or leasehold both having large rents to pay some own the freehold so might have a mortgage which will certainly be cheaper than rent or mortgage free so the base running costs are extremely low.
Pubs that are tenanted or leased can come with a beer tie meaning they can pay a lot more for beer than a freehouse so nowhere near the profit per pint.
Pubs that are more drink than food need to sell a lot of drink to make it work as spend per head can be around £5-£10 where as food pubs can make £15-£30 per head.
location makes the biggest difference in operating costs & the model of tenanted or freehold is a massive factor.
Good luck to you in your pub business from today.
Although there is a huge chasm between you and I politically and socially I recognise from what you have described previously that you will re open certainly in a way that I would appreciate if I were ever to be a customer of yours.
I wouldn't mind finding a pub like yours within walking distance of me to have a nice vegetarian meal and a beer...like  Youngs Special which I have always enjoyed.
Enough of the nostalgia...simply good luck in your pub business from today.
Cheers m8 I’m sure we are more alike than we think & im fairly sure we would have voted the same last time around.
i think you would be an ideal local , the best thing about pubs is the great mix of people you get in , I’d happily buy you a beer & tell you the story behind my vegetarian bar stool ! (currently furloughed with all the other bar stools)
  • I walked past the 2 nearest pubs to me this afternoon. Both seemed "pleasantly" busy
  • I visited 5 pubs today 3 I stopped for a coffee & they were running very safely & good measures in place , 1 I left before ordering as there was a queue at the bar which there shouldn’t be & 1 I didn’t even go in as I couldn’t even get in the door safely as there were a group of oiks huddled around the front door smoking.
As expected the 3 food led country pubs where table service are the norm were fine & the 2 town mainly drink pubs were awful.
  • Fairlop Waters - no draft on sale till Tuesday so had couple bottles.

You waited three months just to have a Fosters.

    Shakes head.
I bet it tastes better than what you was drinking at stoke away

This is going to be a major problem I believe. My bars have opened 3 London sites today and our bookings and PR departments are trying to say it's like NYE/Christmas/Paddy's Day all rolled into one so get ready for an epic party, but then we've been having training all week on PPE, social distancing and now being a cashless "hands free" bar (app ordering, drinks left on pedestal by table for customers to then retrieve, bookings only no walk ins)

I don't get how we're meant to throw this awesome hullabalooza party for people whilst adhering to the new rules, and I can see many similar bars falling foul too

  • Just popped down to the new micro pub that opened today for the first time (a five minute stroll, get in!)

I already knew all tables were booked up so just got a takeaway. Looks lovely in there and can’t wait for it to calm down a bit and visit it for a quiet midweek pint.
  • went to West Malling earlier. All the pubs were open and reasonably busy. social distancing was used but not enforced. no name checks at the door.

outside west malling the other pubs were still closed. apart from the ones that never closed in the first place.
  • Rose of Denmark seemed to be doing a decent trade when I walked past, main door closed with a one-way system through to the garden.

River Ale House only open for the two hours a day takeaway is available, was also doing a decent trade.

note for passing Millwall fans: Angerstein closed because their chiller is broken

  • the thing i noticed, as i swear on this thread somebody said they wont be playing live sport, they had the Leicester V Palace game on. No-one was interested but i thought live televised sport was a no from the government at the moment?

Cor, had to look that up, that's tucked away. Will have to seek it out when things calm down - thanks!
  • How are the non chain pubs accepting orders, as I assume they won't have an App?

No worries, it looks really nice in there. There’s a cafe opening up a couple of doors along too, happy days.

the two places i went to earlier which weren't chain pubs had two different methods. both accepted cash but one you could only order drinks from the outside bar. the other you could walk straight in and order a drink at the bar but you couldn't sit there.

    @clb74

How's the B & W doing now? Not been for years despite it being my local (with the Oak).

Never seemed that friendly outside of Bromley Addicks meetings.

Is it CIU or just members?

Contactless payment, via your debit card, worked well in my local today.
  • going to the pub today was great as in you can socialise and have a laugh with mates you aint seen for ages but i forgot how expensive a pint is in a pub. 5 quid for a moretti.

How did it work at the bar, was there a distanced queuing area?

  • Just been to my local.

I sat outside with two mates, no social distancing taking place inside.

loved my two pints of Guinness though.

Don’t be beer snobs. It’s a freshly pulled pint in a glass. Looks good to me.

Just out driving earlier and I did smile at all the punters sat at the tables on the pavement outside the Kentish Belle on Pickford Lane. At 12.20...

the Royal Oak on Mount Road looked like it was getting a few in just now and brilliant to see the Robin Hood open again. My Dad lives nearby and a few times during very stressful moments I wanted to weep at the sight of it shut as I moped past. Really tempted to walk in now but got the car, which is just as well probably.

Enjoy a pint sensibly everyone! We need it after last night.

@Curb_It Polly has new owners I believe and and had a makeover(new paint). Looked busy and didn’t seem to be much social distancing when I went past.
