Lee Bowyer being linked with West Brom..

  • We've gone from Curbs at 16/1 for every managerial job. now to Bowyer at 2/1 for every managerial job.
  • You all miss an essential factor - Bowyer has got personal and professional ambitions.  With a strong budget for players, he would love to pit his wits against other managers in the Prem.  He doesn't want to be piddling around in the third division with us, restricted to paying players two grand a week.

  • Bowyer will be pushing to be CAFC manager at least as long as Curbs and maybe Jimmy Seed.

I hope Lee stays and takes us to the Premier League, now we’ve got a decent owner the skys the limit, just need to sort out our injuries, maybe a key appointment is being looked at in that area?
  • I think LB is this era's Curbs, he will get us into the Prem and after several years of mid-table boredom we will get impatient and demand that hes replaced.

Read Cawley's article, that should tell you all you need to know.
  • It's probably bollocks. But if Lee is offered a Premiership club then he is likely to take it. You must have ambition to survive at the top. Turning down such an opportunity, even at a yo-yo club like WBA, would seem like lack of ambition. Then there is the additional lure of silly money and relative fame. I hope he sticks with us and drives us on to promotion this year because if he goes, would he take Jacko and Gallon with him?

Depends. I would say there is every chance we are back in the same division as West Brom next season. I don't think it would be a lack of ambition if he turned them down at the moment, it would be a tough ask for someone to go in there and keep them up.

I would be concerned with any serious links to West Ham, Leeds or maybe even Newcastle. All ex clubs who have the spending power to finish in the top half of the Prem. Be mad not to take one of those jobs.
  • A premier league club being interested in a manager from the 3rd division, very unlikely.

    He’s our Fergie.

He's quite a content open honest individual and he is overall more of a people person then someone that has an inner lust for money fame and power.
A mate of mine had a drink and a chat with him a few years ago. JJ was present too. I certainly only heard good things about Bowyer as a person. He's rather normal. Not up-himself.

Far from perfect by any means but if he got offered the job...there wouldn't be any sort of attempt at taking the job in a sly manner.

He would obviously consider the potential of a great opportunity! But when he looks at the overall advantages and disadvantages of leaving Charlton and joining west West brom at this particular present time...

I think he would simply just stay put.

I don't think anyone he knows on a personal level would attempt to pressurise him to leave for the extra ££ either.

I think he likes us as he knows everyone respects him and will listen to him.

He makes the decisions and he has control.

Joining West brom would overall be a pain and it's probably not the right time for an inevitable big move. He'd be shooting himself in the foot via long term.

Charlton is his family, his club and it comes 1st for him.

    Football comes 2nd.
  • The project here is in full swing and the future is looking brighter than ever.

I think he has wanted this feeling at Charlton for a long time and he wont be going just yet. Personally think he will be here for a while yet.
    Called it

Chuffed that Lord Bowyer is staying!

Well according to Bowyer himself, he does!

I don't think he would leave for WBA, even if they offered the job to him ?
If he was offered the Leeds job (he won't because Bielsa is doing a great job) he would've to consider it.

Since Thomas Sandgaard took over Cafc, the managers job will be one of the most sought after.

Lee stayed when we were a comedy club.
Why leave for a yo yo premier club when we will be playing in a European tournament in a decade !

West Brom fans seem more horrified at the prospect of this happening than we do
Bowyer earned (or was at least associated with) a reputation as a player that isn't popular with many.  At Charlton we've had a chance to go beyond that. We've seen how he works as a manager. Whatever his misdemeanours in the past, that is largely forgotten amongst Charlton fans now. We are only concerned with how good his as manager, not what flare ups he had as a kid. I'm not convinced fans of other clubs will have moved on so quickly.

  • Reckon LB knows the old "big fish small pond" adage, and will be quite happy to tick along with tbe new set up he has.
  • Lee is as ambitious as the next guy, and even taking into account his history
with CAFC, he will feel that we are now in a potential position to become a
force in the Championship, and with Thomas's backing The Prem, whereas
WBA are showing all the signs of being on the slide, so why would he want
to jump ship just when the fun and frolics are about to start.
No he will be here for some time yet i feel

"Big fish, small lake" ...... that's Bowyer's adage. It's all waiting for him over in France, for when he gets fed up with football.

Bowyer has always said he wants to build something here, to go on a journey.
This is his project here. He calls all the football decisions, with coaches he trusts.

After all he's been through, now he's finally got the right backing in the shape of Saandgard.
I believe Bowyer's as excited as we are.

  • Everyone is raising valid points about how much nonsense he’s put up with already and it does seem crazy that he would leave now there’s some stability.

I would agree with all of that if it was another Championship club coming in for him.

But these lot are in the Premier League - you know Bowyer would back himself to keep them up.

I still think it’s highly unlikely they’d be in for him anyway but if he got offered it I think it would be toughest test of his CAFC bond so far.
  • Summer of 2019, his contract expired and Roland being a dick about agreeing a new one, he could have left after achieving a promotion for his cv, but despite the interest from elsewhere he stayed

Summer of 2020, the club a complete shambles, I imagine most Charlton fans expected him to leave after the heartache of relegation and the anger at ESI screwing things up, but he didn't

I'm not saying he will never leave, but clearly there is a very strong bond tying him to the club, one which goes beyond money or the current division of the club
Why did he interview for other jobs then?

Reckon he just got pissed off with all the bollocks that was going on. I was actually amazed that he stayed given the lack of respect and conditions he was working under. But stay he did.

I’d be a bit concerned if he started going for interviews under Sandgaard though. Bowyer has a real chance now to work on an even (ish) playing field. He has clearly got something about him as a manager - if teams want you manager it’s a good thing....means your club is doing well. Doesn’t mean he will leave though. Unless it’s a big club I can’t see him downing tools. One day he will have to if he has designs on being a top top manager. Think it goes a bit deeper with Bowyer though - Charlton isn’t just a job to him, it’s more than that.

He won’t want to leave the club in League 1. I’m fairly sure we will keep hold of him for another couple of seasons.

In someways this season is bit of a test for him - we’ve seen how well he can work when the be pissing against the wind. He will want to show that he is capable of doing the same job when he has backed. I’m sure he will continue to enhance his reputation, of course that means more vultures will be flocking...that’s just the way it goes. After all nobody wants you manager if you are doing shit.

Anyway £uck this, it’s turning in to a grapevine post......(obviously nowhere near as good)

He stayed because he never got the job that he went for elsewhere...

I love all the “he’d never leave us unless it was for Real Madrid” stuff and of course Charlton Athletic are the most super duper, amazing thing in the world to us but Bowyer is a professional, with drive and ambition. If he gets a chance in the Premier League he’s going to take it rather than waiting to see if Charlton maybe get there one day, just like he did when he was a teenager.
  • There is no way LB will take the WBA job, of that I am certain .
  • As SE9 said, has Lee Bowyer ever been offered any of the jobs that were mentioned last Season ? WBA still have a manager who got them promoted last season.
Aren't Fulham and West Brom in positions we expected and no surprise both Parker and Bilic are up against it. They deserve backing.

Lee Bowyer will relish the speculation as it's a ringing endorsement of Cafc current success.

If he didn’t have drive and ambition then he would be in the wrong game.  I’m sure he will get his chance in the premier league. But can’t see it being yet. He has the opportunity to build something with us.

If Bowyer wants to manage in the PL he's going to have to take on a relegation fight with a club like West Brom or win promotion from the championship himself. Whatever he decides I'm sure he has no illusions of holding out for a relatively stable club with top 6 aspirations and a large transfer kitty, as that scenario's just a  fantasy
