Personally, I think our recruitment has been good and not the problem. As for JJ, I would want to know more about the situation. I can't see how given his position, he can stand up to Bowyer.  If I was Sandgaard, I'd find out what the players think about him. I could be wrong, but I think he is popular.
I don't think it's the number 1 problem but I just think it's a tad overhyped. The most influential signings we have had were sought after or already proven that's all. When we really needed a player the most and had the means to do it they failed to deliver.

Of course that it what he should do, I am just observing is all. Jacko is very much the sit on hands character to me, I am not sure if he would be a good fit for us and I wouldn't want what's a Charlton legends reputation with us tarnished. Maybe when he has proven himself in the future.

Might be an unpopular view but if Lee goes I don't mind if Gallen and Jackson go as well.

I feel Jacko wouldn't make a good Charlton manager. He has to take blame for the situation we are in as well as he also coaches. If you don't think he takes any blame that would suggest he isn't standing up to Bowyers methods and suggests to me he lacks spine and the character needed to mangage footballers. It's either he is a coach void of ideas like Bowyer or he doesn't have to nerve to call out Lee, neither a good look imo

As for Gallen I think he speaks well but ultimately I believe he is overrated due to him getting in players during a period where everything was bleak. Most of the players that we got that succeeded had big potential anyway or were proven. We have taken in far too many players that are injury prone or haven't performed and when we had the budget to fix the area we needed the most (centre back) he couldn't find one. In all of the footballing world our recruitment team couldn't find a centre back. I find it extremely hard to believe. Again it will be an unpopular view and I am in no way saying Steve is a root problem but I would like to see a clean slate with a complete new team
If you feel that about Jackson now, didn't you feel that about Bowyer when Robinson was wed to 4231 and it obviously wasn't working?
At the time being honest no. As the years have gone on though I reflect more and more on those situations though obviously. I feel again though Robinson was unfortunate to an extent, 4231 is a great formation, I just don't think it's a formation lower league players can handle or understand with the skillset they have. He was trying to play chess with checkers pieces.

I said it from the start, if Robinson was our manager with Thomas at the helm I genuinely think he would have been a success, two similar characters and positivity breeds positivity. Not that I want Robinson I am just saying he gets more grief than he deserves imo, nothing against the bloke

I agree with most of that. I also think Bowyer is struggling because he is asking players to do things they either can't do or don't understand.  I think it causes him stress because he doesn't understand why because he, and most of the players he played with, could do them.  So again chess with checkers pieces.

Sorry to swear but this is Roddy stuff is  on ITTV, and maybe a large pinch of salt is needed
I feel that Thomas is his own man and will make his own decisions without any help or hinderance
from Roddy, he has always backed Lee, up to now anyway, but lets just hope Tuesday goes well
or the shit and the fan may well come together.
I too have heard rumours concerning Roddy. And not from a social media source either.

If you are an assistant manager, your job is not to fight against the manager. JJ should not be automatically blamed for Bowyer's deficiencies.
I agree to an extent but I do think he is also responsible. Similar to how when players stop playing for a manager then a new guy comes in and they turn it around. It just doesn't sit well with me is all. Shows you put yourself before the club and the fans which I can't agree with.

If Jacko is seeing something he doesn't like he should be doing what he can to change that, if he isn't then he is just as to blame is Bowyer is and being a yes man effectively.

Just to be clear this is purely speculation and putting my thoughts out there

    A game of three phases:

  • Absolute shambles, our midfield is crap, when was the last time we actually put a ball through for our forwards
to run on to!! I like Stockley but since he has come we have turned into a long ball side, Schwartz has had nothing in the way of service, on paper our squad looks sound but in reality they are division one mid table players with the exception of one or two.

Morgan played a lovely ball that Washington ran onto yesterday.

Why buy the Swindon lad and not start him in any game?!

I don't see Smith currently being better for us in the middle of midfield of the dog shit league than Albie Morgan.

One bad game and he's bombed out.
That was so odd. Smith had a quiet game in the first half. With all the long balls from the back bypassing the midfield it’s easy to see why he was struggling.
But there was a five minute spell at the beginning of the second half where he was getting more  involved. He was playing lots of short, well weighted passes, and we started to control possession. I couldn’t believe it when he was hooked a couple of minutes later. How would that make you feel on your full debut?

A couple of times I think. Unfortunately Washington then got done for nudging the defender out of the way, who went down like he was made of cardboard.

Agree, on the match thread I just praised Smith for doing four passes in a row on the deck which was rare yesterday by Cafc players. He then got hooked ; Maybe he had a knock but did not make sense as the lad was growing into the game.

I did laugh when Bowyer stated 'Smith was a bit slow on the ball' like that's a rarity in this team!

Yeah, should have made quicker decisions and pass it poxy backwards like the other midfielders.

Deluge and waterlogged pitch ..... but we played on, as we meekly succumbed 1-0.
Memory a bit hazy now, but do I remember Colin Walsh's penalty got stuck in a puddle or something?

Walsh's penalty was saved, but their goal was probably going to hit the post, and deflected off a puddle and went in. My abiding memories of that day are
    1. it absolutely pissing down and being thankful we were in the bit of the stand that was under cover
    2. the ball practically floating across the line when they scored up the other end
    3. my usually very proper Mum joining in with the "the referee's a wanker" chants, although I can't remember exactly why, and she denies it to this day
Video of the game's up on youtube here:

Thanks for posting, @aliwibble Enjoyed watching that again, but without the soaking.

Ah, the beautiful game. When players were real men and getting your shorts filthy in the first minute was a badge of honour.
You're running in treacle and the ball just stops in a puddle. I've played in those conditions plenty, in my time. You just got on with it.

Now the ref quotes 'health & safety' and the match is called off. When did it all change?

I am sure someone else may have picked up on this, so apologies if I am repeating, I have not read all the thread. It is just a general point.

Bowyer clearly likes players to play like he did, "combative" to put it politely. Which is fine, if you have one or two like that; trouble is, he wants ten. Which is why we have such a bad disciplinary record. Once players have done their bit to please him, and got a yellow - often in a situation where a tough challenge isn't really necessary - they have to ease off. Or, of course, they do it again and get a red.
I'm wondering what Bowyer would have made of Claus Jensen. As Curbs said pre-match, Claus didn't like doing too much running in training or in matches, whilst Browny observed that the old side had enough players to do the grafting and accommodate Jensen's talents.

Claus Jensen would have been on the bench.
Needs to learn to 'work harder' and 'win his personal battles'.

Concern about his fitness levels ..... he wouldn't be risked until he'd had 'got some minutes' with the u23s.

This is exactly why Watson and Pratley spoke so highly of Bowyer on the call last week. 2 old cart horses who can't find a forward pass, but can run all day in training. Bowyer's probably the only manager in the league who'd start them.

Lol. I wonder what his pass completion was. I was thinking that he was just beginning to look a bit useful, and don’t remember too many of his passes going astray. And if you sub him, do you really have to criticise the lad publicly as well?
I was trying to be patient with Bowyer, but I wonder if he has it in him to turn this round. I hope he does.

86% pass completion, the highest in the team. Not sure any of them were killer passes, but it shows he was a little unlucky to be hooked maybe?

Wouldn't both Smith and DJ on the field at the same team make sense ?

The link up play this season is so mediocre and even after a week at Sparrows still looks a struggle.

If that was a midweek game I was there. Even got rained on in the toilets.

Edited - just seen the video and can see that was obviously not a night match. I did get drenched at a midweek game at the Hawthorns probably about 25 years ago. It was freezing and some Charlton fans were drunk and decided to go bare chested.

That’s an easy equation, the player with the higher pass rate success gets subbed first. Gives the others a chance to increase theirs.

Thank Christ Fleetwood aren’t very clinical or we would’ve been slaughtered. Plenty of shots from their side but mostly they came from very poor positions.

Just three shots from our lads and only 0.05 expected goals after going 1-0 up. Very much backs up the lack of attacking ambition that was evident to the naked eye.

Fleetwood Town and Charlton Athletic have each been fined £2,500 for failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.

A melee, involving Charlton's Jayden Stockley and Fleetwood's Jordan Rossiter, resulted in four yellow cards as the game drew to a close.

Both sides admitted a charge of FA Rule E20 and accepted the penalty.

I mean Stockley did either stick his finger in his bum or lift him by the nutsack...

    Was a very odd reaction.
