  • Can we reopen the "has Bowyer lost it" thread?

I think it might be the next "come in number four..."
I was about to request this as a birthday request , come on it's a lot more exciting than shit like fucking wrestling or harry munk and smeghan , fuck off with that shit let's get going on Bowyer now we've turned it around from utter shit getting no points to passable shit (i should know) and getting points

It will all come down to that run in. I've been incredibly critical of Bowyer, but I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong if he turns it around
  • Doesn't matter how you get the 3 points, as long as you get them! Still livid about my bet 😂
  • Such a pity when we had games in hand we screwed up.

Now it’s unlikely that even with  a decent run it will pull us up short because too many of our rivals have games in hand over us. It’s not over but I’m certainly not hopeful.
I don't believe that's as important as some people think.

All these teams still have to play games against the sides around them, dog eat dog.
They will all drop plenty of points.

And ourselves, we still have to play most of the top 10. That's our God-given chance.

If we can keep our embryo run going - there's little reason why we're not capable of beating several of these top sides and being at least 6th place at the end of the season.

  • Fair play, good to keep the unbeaten run going, even if Northampton are a poor side. Still don’t think we’ll make play offs but let’s give ourselves half a chance. Nice to see Washington grab a couple, needed them.

Not sure I agree, we haven’t looked particularly good for a long time. However, as much as I don’t feel Bowyer is the solution, his record in the big games helped get us up. Even last season we beat Luton and Barnsley at the Valley in the 6 pointers in the second half of the season. In the past he’s been good at motivating us in the big games. Given how it looks this season will be really interesting if he can do the same if we’re up there in a months time.

Thought we looked rubbish to be honest. Barely created anything or played any football worth talking about. Yes we were comfortable defensively , woopee. Need to be so much better to be in with even an outside chance of the play offs. I’m looking round our squad and not seeing any players in form. Aneke and Millar looked good a few weeks ago but even they’re off the boil now. There’s a lack of quality it’s all so turgid huff and puff we can’t get promoted like this. Thought morgan looked good and hungry on the positive side.

take the 3 points but not getting the slightest bit carried away by that result! Need 8 wins from 12 just to qualify for play offs. We are nowhere near good enough for that run, and even if we somehow pull it off , we won’t be anywhere near good enough to actually win the play offs. We only just scraped through both semi and final in 2019 with a side that would trounce this lot 46 times out of 46 if they played each other for a whole season!
I dunno, Paul, whatever this says about the rest of their seasons, Ben Watson and Jason Pearce been right on form the last 3 games...

I'm pleased to see us a bit more solid again, and I love a blood and guts fight for the cause man as much as anyone - but if the two in-form men we're lauding after our narrow victories over 2 bits of drowning relegation fodder are a couple of backs-to-the-wall old warhorses trundling round the pitch getting in the way of stuff (which is all either of them are good for... did you see Watson's 'shot' from the edge of the box after about 10 mins?!).... it tells you all you need to know unfortunately!!

  • Come on boys, late play off push incoming.

  • Ref was erratic and gave a bizarre penalty
Connor lapped up the two decent chances he got
At this level a tryer is always worth several skilful lightweights
    Stockley and Prats immense
we mostly huffed and puffed against a poor side with negative tactics
    JFC hugely valuable
Millar and Morgan on the wrong sides for nearly an hour- swapped over and Bingo! Bowyer take note
Chuks as enigmatic as ever - created one goal, forced a decent save, got needlessly booked for infantile petulance then couldn’t be arsed to defend properly at the corner giving the Cobbler an unchallenged header
    3 points feels slightly cheeky
let’s hope the Shrews and the Gas are as ineffectual
  • Am I the only one who thought it was definitely a pen? Can’t tackle like that and expect to get away with it.
No, I definitely thought it was a pen too. Defender clattered into JFC & totally wiped him out. JFC might not have been going for the ball but neither was the defender. If that happens in the box it's a pen, anywhere else it's a free kick to us.
  • I've made it clear that I think Bowyer's lucky to still be in the job......HOWEVER

Credit where it's due, I thought the team was dead for the season, but they've shown a fighting spirit I didn't think they had in the last couple of games.

I still don't think we'll make the playoffs, but at least the team is fighting & looking like they want to give it a real go.  That in itself makes me & I'm sure every other Charlton fan, feel a lot happier going forward
Agree but something happened a couple of weeks ago to bring about this change. We were a driverless juggernaut hurtling downhill towards oblivion. Bowyer was blaming everyone from the ref, to his players to the tea lady and had lost the plot. Whether there was a clear the air meeting, whether TS or Roddy sat Bowyer down for a chat or whether Bowyer did some soul searching something changed. Just a shame it didn’t happen a few weeks earlier. The play offs still look just out of reach when looking at other teams games in hand but keep winning and who knows. And to have a chance we need to be a bit more expansive. Yes we had to go back to basics but we need to find a way to be more creative to keep winning. Not every team will be as poor as Northampton.

It’s Sunderland at Wembley again. COYR
I reckon they will go up automatically. They are picking up momentum
Funny what a change of manager will do.

    Just like Cardiff.

    And Burton.

. Will they allow fans in to the playoff final this year?
What.......to watch Hull play Lincoln  ??  They might just as well play the game at Grimsby and not make the buggers travel.
  • And our last 3 results would have been much better an all

    🤣😂
  • There are still 12 games to go and 36 points to play for so if we get back to the sort of form we displayed in the August-November period we know we are capable of averaging about two points per game.

If we do that then we end up with 75 points and that puts us into 6th spot in 2018/19, 5th spot in 2017/18, 6th in 2016/17 and 6th again in 2015/16.

So, we don't have a lot of rope to play with but there is not much to lose now and it feels like we reached our nadir in the Blackpool game and we can't get much lower than that.

We have to forget about the teams around us and games in hand and all of that stuff - we can't control that - all we can control is making sure we get to 75 points and booking a place in the Play Offs and giving ourselves a chance.

  • Good win, only a start, let's string a few more and sort ourselves out for the playoffs. COYR

Back in with a slim shout of the play offs, but despite our position (8th) i think realistically we're 11th given that Accrington and Oxford need a point from 2 games to go above us and Blackpool need 1 win from 4.

I know it's a long running joke on here about 'going on a run' but if we can take 10 points minimum from the next 4 games, Shrewsbury, Bristol Rovers, Wimbledon and Crewe then we'll be right back up there.

Realistically though i'm still not convinced by us and i feel that with the run of games we have after that, i think the only way we'll have a chance of the play offs is if we can get Inniss back to partner Famewo by April. Who knows, things might just all fall nicely into place.

  • Northampton were direct and don't have pacey strikers - meat and drink to Pearce. He may not look so comfortable next time we come up against someone with pace and trickery, but that is where having Famewo back is important. We can get away with having Pratley in there on a night like tonight.
  • I'm not allowed to comment on the game as I did not watch it.
However, 7 points from 9, should have been 9, only one goal conceded, it looks like we are beginning to turn the corner.
The sixth place spot could well still be up for grabs.

We played well and dominated but I was relieved we got a penalty, because it didn't look likely we would score. A lot of crosses into the box but no real chances.

At the same time we looked rock solid as a defensive unit. Since the return of JFC there's no longer a gaping hole in the middle.

Lee 'Bullyer' full of praise for everyone today. The team looks very together and as Curbs said, the attacking play should come back as we keep building.
  • Pompey are really struggling at the moment. No shots on target today against Sunderland, they look really vulnerable in 6th place BUT a number of teams could pinch it as well as us
Is their manager still recovering from his operation or is he back now?
  • We've played better and lost so I will take the three points with glee. Something to build on but up until the penalty I thought the game was just going to peter out into a drab 0-0.
  • How we are only one point of the playoffs is a mystery to me.
I suppose it just shows how poor this league is.
I think the quality of football I've seen this season is as bad as I've seen in over 55 years supporting the club.
Win our next two games and we will probably be top six  (although teams have games in hand).
The run in could yet suprise us.

It does! But having those 2 on form means we only need 1 or 2 goals to win a game rather than 3 or 4. Sometimes all you need to do is get in the way of stuff and nick one! Chuks means we're always likely to nick one.
  • Fantastic effort and commitment last night by all players.
    Wasn't a classic but I never expect a classic in league 1.

How can players underperformed for a 4month period so dramatically is beyond me.

The usual suspects Pearce, Pratley, Watson we all very good last night IMO.

We got the ball forward quickly, got the ball in the box from crosses as quick as we could and closed down.
No tippy tappy shit, passing backwards and backing off players. It's not rocket science, it's league one.

Them last 8 games are ridiculous but could be  a roller coaster.
