Next Seasons Squad

As it stands whatever division we are in there will be a major overhaul of the squad, who would you keep from the current line up including the loan
players albeit the chances on a few are slim to nothing.

Mostly squad members. Need about 7/8 new first team players around Inniss, F-C, Shinnie, Washington. And 4/5 better midfield / defensive squad players.
Big ask. May take two seasons, especially as academy quality seems to have dried up? (Except Henry).

Look to bring through the likes of Aaron Henry, Charlie Barker etc too .
  • One interesting aspect in the summer is that UEFA appears set to scrap FFP in its current format

I dont know if this is a separate setup to the one used in the Football League and whilst Sandgaard hasnt said that he'd go so far as to "buy League One" at any point - It might make our lives easier, although there are a few big clubs at this level who'll be thinking the same.

    Stockley
    Morgan
    Schwartz
    DJ
    Innis
    Famewo
    AMB
    Gilbey

Schwartz, Gilbey and AMB based on potential to do well rather than proven record and the fact that new management may get more out of two of them and give more opportunities to all 3.

That would leave us with a pretty long shopping list with at least one GK, four full backs, two centre backs, three wingers, two centre mids and one striker.

Of the centre mids, one athletic CDM and one with creative ability. The striker should be a pace merchant to stretch opposition defences and open space for the midfield to get into attacking positions.

All of the above based on us remaining in League One next season.
  • AMB
    Inniss
Famewo (If we could sign him)
    JFC
    Morgan
    DJ
    Chucks
    Washington
Stockley (If we could sign him)

So would need at least 10 players by my reckoning.

    A big summer ahead

  • Hope you dont mind mate but the below saves me typing my own list lol

You want to keep Alex Gilbey but get rid of Albie Morgan and Chuks?
  • Yup, I think Gilbey may come good. Albie I just dont think is good enough and Chuks although good for us this season so far seems to do better as an impact sub imo

  • I honestly wouldn’t be bothered if any of them left.  But, if I had to chose.

    JFC
    Inniss

    Shinnie

  • I am very surprised at the number of you who would ditch Ben Amos.....I don’t think he has done much wrong.
    Very curios?

I think it’s just that he’s out of contact at the end of the season and not playing particularly well (nor bad) and if NA wanted to have a look at AMB then now would be a good time

What after all those long range shots that went in to the centre of the goal?
  • I’m going to leave it up to Nidge to decide.

The only ones I would 100% keep would be Chuks, JFC, DJ, Stockley and Famewo.

The others it depends on who else you can get.  Will you get a better 4th choice center back than Pearce?  2 better left backs than Purrington etc etc.

I would focus on 7 or 8 players that would significantly improve us the other 14 or 15 could be players we currently have.
Agree with this. Pearce or Deji as 4th choice is fine. Problem is if Inniss is one of the three with his injury problems then you are down to 3. If the funds allow it id probably keep both and sign a solid first choice pairing. Deji is useful as he’s versatile and on his day a good league one defender.

    Personally I’d keep:
At least one of Amos and AMB
At least one of Gunter and Matthews
    Purrington
    Deji, Pearce, Inniss
    Watson, Shinnie, JFC
    DJ
    Aneke
    Washington

I’d definitely be up for signing Famewo and Stockley again. Jury out on Gilbey and Schwartz

GK and RB I’m not sure. I’d give AMB and Matthews game time and tell them to earn starting spots. If they don’t do enough I’d loan AMB out and release Matthews, signing first teamers and keeping Amos and Gunter as back up.

We need 4/5 midfielders and I’d like another striker but 4 is usually enough.

  • I’d keep Innis, Matthews, DJ, Morgan, JFC and Washington ; ideally Stockley and Famewo.  Rest can all go .
  • I understanding keeping players like Purrington and Gunter as they’re under contract but why also keep the likes of Deji and Pearce? One isn’t consistent enough to be a CB in a promotion winning side and the other is coming forwards the end of his career. I’m sure we could find better than both of them. Keep too many squad level players and we’re not going to improve.

    Under Contract
Keep: Ashley Maynard Brewer, Ryan Inniss, Albie Morgan, Diallang Jaiyesimi, Conor Washington, Josh Davison
Keep if form improves/given a chance: Alex Gilbey, Ronnie Schwartz, Ben Purrington
    Sell if Possible: Chris Gunter

    Out of Contract
Retain: Adam Matthews, Andrew Shinnie, Jake Forster-Caskey, Chuks Aneke
Retain if form improves: Ben Amos, Darren Pratley
Release: Adedeji Oshilaja, Jason Pearce, Ben Watson

    Loans
Renew: Akin Famewo  Liam Millar Jayden Stockley
    Return: Ian Maatsen Matt Smith
  • Ignoring their contract situations and likelyihoood of getting them to sign so unrealistic, I would keep:

    Keep
    AMB (great potential)
    DJ (fleetingly looked decent)
    Albie Morgan (just)
Gilbey (think he will come good)
    Purrington (as back up)
Matthews (good back up at least)
    JFC (decent season so far)
    Aneke (beast on form)
    Famewo (super at this level)
Stockley (bit slow but won't get 4 better)

    And move on:
    Amos (not good enough)
Innis (never going to be fit for long)
Gunter (at fault for countless goals)
    Pratley (a year too long)
Oshilaja (not good enough for a team wanting promotion)
    Pearce (see Pratley)
    Maatsen (not good enough yet)
Matt Smith ( probs not seen enough though)

    No thoughts either way:
    Josh Davison (not seen enough)
    Schwartz (not seen enough)
Shinnie (decent but we have a lot of light weight midfielders)
Millar (would need to improve for me to wish to re-sign him)
Watson (depends if NA gets more from him)
    Washington (despite recent form)

Washington in no thoughts either way? Seems harsh imo he's a keep for me. Works his absolute nuts off and is unselfish.

WTF are you talking about......there was one, which evidently swerved like hell.
If you’re going to criticise then try and sound feasable.

There have been a few shots from distance which should have been blocked off before they let fly. Some were unstoppable once struck but I think the argument is that a reasonable percentage the keeper should have done better.

I think he’s a decent keeper but a keeper not working on full confidence needs a rest.

If you take the loans out we already need 6 players to have a 25 man squad.  Assuming there are at least 3 you can't/won't get to re sign.  You already at 9.

Like I said it depends on who you get as to who you keep.  I would be happy with Oshilaja as 5th choice CB and 2nd choice right back, for example.

If we signed the right 6 players, 2 center backs, a left back, a midfielder, a winger and a striker.  Who are better than what we currently have I would actually keep everyone we currently have, if the wage bill made it practical.
  • Would like to keep Morgan, JFC and Chuks. Outside of that really not fussed tbh.
