I don’t see how any League One side can sign Harper (Rumoured around 500,000), Pigott (must be on a fair wedge to stay in L1), Fraser (See Pigott) and Bonne (Probably a chunk of Champ wages)
Ipswich and Wigan are doing a League One version of Everton/West Ham. Hoover up some big name players and/or players coming off a decent season for teams one step below them. It hasn't always worked out for those clubs and there's no guarantee it works for these teams in the third tier either.
Yes, money spent generally gives you a better chance but there are still plenty of players out there who can do just as good a job as Fraser or Pigott or Wyke. These guys are signing for League One clubs, not Man City.
On the flip side, we do need to see some movement (2? 3?) before the friendlies against Reading/Palace/Fulham otherwise we're going to be playing catch up on the squad building side again this season. That has worked out for us in the past (18/19 particularly) but it does make the job tougher...
The main problem with this window right now isn’t so much who we have or haven’t signed, it’s the expectations after TS’s 5 year plan comments. As long as we’re even marginally better equipped than last season we’ll be in with a real chance of competing for the top two IMHO.
ipswich are doing what we did in the powell title winning year snapping up the leagues top talent them and wigan deffo leading the way atm time for us to step up and make some marquee signings to excite the fans and show some intent !

Wont be anyone left worth signing at this rate, bloody Ipshite and Wigan
So that’s Joe Dodoo and Szmodics I’ve suggested 😂 I think I will just sit back now and read the rumours/suggestions instead of writing my own ones from now on 😄
It might have sounded a bit silly but it’s still a great shout on a great player.
Worse has be said on here so don’t worry about it lol

Yeah, can’t believe there are no footballers available to buy, better shut up shop now
I'm not concerned about who we haven't signed so far, I'm concerned about who others are signing though, as many of them have been realistic targets that would have improved our squad, and good players for a club like us, chasing promotion. Instead they're now playing for rivals who are trying to do the same thing as us. The more of them that get signed by other teams, the smaller the pool of realistic, decent signings gets, and the closer we get to the transfer deadline, the more panic sets in and the more teams throw money about trying to sign players. You want to make your move early, your have a better chance of getting your targets in and you can bed them in better.

Starting to feel like groundhog day with our transfer dealings. We are clearly not spending anywhere near what we were expecting this summer, Wigan and Ipswich are prepared to spend money on signing players and showing real intent to get out of this crap league whilst we’re messing around trying to haggle on wages and going back to square one after we’ve been turned down.
Not seeing any ambition at the moment, I hope it starts to pick up but not holding my breathe.
All of these players could have been attracted to Charlton had we competed financially (Humprhys, Fraser or Piggott would have been ideal).
I'm starting to think we've been a little duped into buying season tickets with the very bold statements at the end of last season but lack of delivery since. Let's face it on the back of those comments we all expected far more than we've seen.
Without Chuks goals & being in a far tougher division this year, things are not looking promising.
The half full gang will keep saying there's still time but alot of the best L1 players are starting to be hoovered up whilst we continue to show little sign of blowing away the division or emulating Hull City.

Sensible post, but some div will still call you a bedwetter.
Becoming clear that Ipswich and Wigan have a much bigger budget than we do but I don’t think any of the other sides have done much to be worried about in the window so far.
Can’t say I’m not a bit disappointed as I thought there was a good chance we’d be spending more to get out of this league quicker but we can still spend smarter than them even if we don’t spend more.
How comes we always end up playing promoted sides last day of the season. I make it Leeds, Bournemouth, Burnley, Hull, probably missed someone else out. Going to put some money on Ipswich doing the same.
3 and a bit weeks until kick off and it feels like we're in the same situation as previous years recruitment wise.
Been doing some digging through "football sources" on why the market is so stagnant.
The general impression I have got is more than half the EFL have taken out these monitored grants (loans), the ones that are currently under embargo are only the ones that have already breached the terms.
A lot of them are waiting to sell a player to pay it back and its become a Dutch auction. Teams offering a fraction of what they know the player is worth, knowing the selling club need the money before they can do anything themselves. Good players who are out of contract are getting offered pennies. The exception is when they are players multiple clubs really want (Wyke and Pigott were mentioned by name).
From what I gather 2 or 3 "big transfers" from the EFL to the prem will kick start the whole thing, else clubs will be giving away talent come the end of August.
It's more of a poker hand than normal. Hold your nerve is the word on the street.
Anyway no idea if that's factual, just passing it on.
Re-upping this from yesterday in response to "it's always better to get business done early because it's cheaper".

Agreed, I think it's reasonable by the middle of July to start taking stock, and looking at what our rivals have done.
I mentioned this yesterday during the match thread, but I'm really surprised we've not had trialists involved in any of our 2 games so far. Pompey had several involved on Saturday, so it's not a Covid thing.
I have to say Ipswich signing both Pigott & Fraser is disappointing for me. It's less than 4 weeks to the start of the season (7 weeks to the end of the window) and the only totally NEW recruits so far are Dobson and MacGillivray (edited) Yes, we brought in Stockley & Famewo and retained a few others.
I still have faith and I'm still confident of us bringing in more players, but I'm not as confident as I was a month ago about us smashing through this league.

They must be proper loaded.

ipswich are building a nice squad and will be a threat.
it really is like dealing with a bunch of needy toddlers

Wigan - Humprhys & Wyke
Ipswich - Piggott & Fraser
Sunderland - Pritchard
