I played Rory's childhood course, Holywood last week. It's not long but it is so narrow and penal, lots of side slopes too so good training for him at Augusta.
Is something wrong with McIlroy? Had a bust up with the press, turned down the opportunity to play in the Memorial and didn't bother to let Jack Nicklaus know in preference to go to the Canadian Open where he has just shot and 8 over 78, including a quadruple bogey and missed the cut.

As one of the commentators said......it must be a big come down after winning the Masters & therefore doing the Grand Slam. Like letting air out of a balloon he's had all that pressure on him for years & now he's done it all the adrenaline has gone.

At one point he was 150th out of 156......and that included 3 players who had withdrawn !!
Struggling with new driver as the one he won the masters with was ruled illegal
That might be part of it but if one of the world's best players is struggling to adapt to a driver with a minimal change then what hope is there for anyone else. Scheffler had to change his and promptly won the Memorial. Mind you, McIlroy's been here before with that disastrous NIke episode.
Then, though, there was the Memorial episode when he didn't even have the courtesy to call Nicklaus and chose to play the far lesser tournament. Why would you turn down one of the most prestigious and respected tournaments for a much lesser one? That does suggest that, perhaps, there's something else going on and perhaps it's something as simple as the re-location of his family from Florida to the UK. We'll see if that was a one off next week anyway when he appears in the US Open.
Watched it all last night and it looked like there were all sorts of things going wrong in his head. Every element of his game looked sub-pro, amazed in the end he managed a 78.
The drop off since the major has been bizarre and I feel a lot more than just losing a little competitive edge. Those top ones are all competitive animals, they hate losing knowing they have the ability to win.
Fascinated in how he goes next week. That’s if he starts

His body language is very poor .Is it the come down after Augusta, the Driver, maybe his domestic life ?By his own admission he hasn’t put the work in off the course.just recently.
Canadian Open (the one the Rory missed the cut and finish 159th) currently has 11 players tied for the lead at -11 and another 8 players just 1 shot back. In fact there are 47 players within 2 of the lead.
I reckon he has still has stuff going on off the course with the Mrs. She couldn’t even break a smile when he won the masters. I would put it down to that because it would take a lot for his golf to be affected in my opinion.
It's just as well that the Ryder Cup isn't being played at this course. Rory, Rose and Lowry are having a nightmare.
That said, I would love to be a fly on the wall listening to the conversations they are having as they walk around the course 😅
Loved Rose's shot that hit a tree & bounced back onto the cart path.....and then started rolling backwards. Spectators falling over themselves to get out of the way as the ball backed up a number of yards. Only stopped when it came in contact with someone in a mobility scooter !.
And then there was Lowry picking his ball up on the green without marking it first. That's US Open pressure for you.
But in the end Rory made the cut on 6 over. No-one is out of this yet.
Having misses the first two days media conferences, we got yesterday "Fed up of having to talk to you lot", "it's easier to make the cut when you really don't care whether you make the cut or not, "can't wait to get out of here" etc etc. McIlroy really isn't in a good place and needs time off to sort out whatever is eating him.
Rory feels completely let down by USPGA over the Liv situation and I completely agreed with him, they used him when they were fighting Liv, and then let the players back in who had their pockets lined, I would be pissed off as well.

We wanna see good golf not popular golf.

crazy.
McIlroy shoots 6 over for the back 9.
And next we get the 'Rolex hour' with more studio analysis and panoramic shots instead of adverts.
It must be the hardest sport to watch on TV.
