Most complete knockout performance since Denmark in 2002.
I was the first to criticise after the Scotland game and I stand by it as it was gash and should be called out.
But that apart it’s been a masterclass in game-management. I can’t speak highly enough about this group of players and Southgate’s management through this tournament.
I said it earlier and he is right behind Ramsey now in taking us to successive semi finals.
I also criticise Sterling at times but he was so much better tonight. Credit where it’s due.
Denmark will be much harder, but what an opportunity, we’ll not get a better one.
If, as an England fan, you wrote a wish list before that match, I reckon the game would’ve checked off almost all of them.
Convincing performance No injuries No bookings for Maguire, Rice, and Phillips Kane building on his goal vs Germany Minutes for previously little used players Able to rest key players by subbing them off Clean sheet Those who played the full 90 got to play 30 minutes in second gear
It just doesn’t go like this for England at major tournaments. I feel weird.
All we needed from that game was a win. And a clean sheet. And no bookings.
And no injuries, managing to use five subs to avoid too much tiredness, Kane to score a couple, Henderson to get his first goal for England, and a 'home' tie in the next round.
That was not far off the perfect performance and players like Foden and Grealish didn’t even come on. Back at Wembley in front of 60k this is a new dawn for English football. After all the Covid shit etc it’s just perfect. I fucking love this group of players.
Has beaten the crap out of a minnow in Panama Won a penalty shootout Got to two Major Semi-Finals Beat the Germans Won a Euros KO game on foreign soil
Absolutely, and to think about how much negativity there was around him at the start. Jobs not done yet but I'm confident he'll be focusing the minds right now on that fact. It is nice to see the fans seemingly have bought in to his ideas now and thankfully the players did a long time ago.
