Good solid win plus the possibility of signing a player who is a long way above league one standard. And England beat India by an innings and 71 runs. And Kent won through to T20 finals day. Happy Saturday!
Really entertaining game. But also a strange one in that Crewe had more than a few chances to get back into it after we went in front and but for Morgan's great header off the line it would have been a tense last 10 minutes. And Crewe are surely destined to finish near the bottom of the table
Pleasing thing for me today was that a lot of the players who have been criticised put in a good performance today - MacGillivray has won me over today after I wasn't sure about him after a couple of dodgy performances; Gunter is still not a left back but he had a good game today and put a superb cross over for DJ's first goal; Morgan had his best game of the season; and even Watson looked OK!
Funny thing was until DJ scored his goal I thought he was having a bad game - a thought others obviously agreed with judging by comments on the match thread!
Anyway, onwards and upwards. A great improvement over the last few games but still I would suggest a long way off a promotion winning one.
Oh and by the way, Ipswich still haven’t won and are in the relegation zone. Against far weaker opposition I might add. Wonder how that pension fund manager is feeling right now?
Let's support and encourage DJ. He has a high ceiling but am already hearing too many typical Charlton comments on him. For example, people slagging him off on the match thread then suddenly saying how well he played in the post match thread.
At the game... no idea how anyone can have said anything bad about him on the match thread. He was brilliant from minute 1.
Good performance, soft opposition but 442 suited us much better - liked the look of Lee - confident, composed and much needed craftsman in final third - left back and another striker along with arter and we should have the ammunition to challenge
First game for ages, don’t know what you’re all moaning about, I had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon at the Valley (bear in mind I haven’t watched any streams since we got relegated!)
Thought Washington had a good game and DJ caused them some problems. Pretty solid performance all over. Shame Thomas isn’t still a Charlton player thought he looked good for Crewe although they were pretty poor side. Decent game though.
yes!!, much better all round , looked more of a team. Well done to Albie, his best 90mins this season, particularly the last 15 of the 1st half, if he makes that his worst level of performance he may prove me wrong. But one swallow as they say. Watson also surprised me a consistently effective 90 mins. Wish jayasiemi would take on his man a bit more when 1 on 1. Elewere reminds me a little of Richard rufus, would love to him to be half the player. Washington needs to sort his finishing!!.Well done lads finally got going.👍
Good perfoemances all over the pitch, and a deserved mention for Albie who cleared one off the line and was generally everywhere you needed him. Jayesemi looked tidy, and took his gola well, and the keeper pulled off a couple of great saves. All in all a good afternoon. Happy days.
The little I saw of the second half, I thought Lee looked excellent and was involved in the majority of our attacks through the last 15.
Clare was also heavily involved down that right side and gives us solidity there if for example we him in tuck inside to form a three (with Kirk an outlet on the left) on a tough away day at Sunderland/Sheff Wed.
Yeah I thought he looked very good when he came on. I do really think there's a player in there - but if anything if we need some energy and athleticism, and someone who can go box to box at the end of a game he seems perfect for that.
Much better all round back 5 excellent as was Deji when he came on quite a prospect Connor played well and a much improved Albie. Good to go into a international break on a win. Hope for a couple more additions including Harry Arter who will be excellent and we can look ahead with confidence
Washington was immense and deserved a goal (but had left his shooting boots behind). DJ not far behind. Albi looked much better in the 442 than the 4231. Watson anchored the middle well, and both fullbacks did well. We should have scored more, but needed a couple of excellent saves from MacGillivray to stay safe. Really enjoyable game to watch!
Especially from the likes of Gunter and Watson who finally showed some signs as to why we brought them in.
Lets make no bones about, it was "only" Crewe, I said during the week that they're a massively different team to the one that ended our Play-Off hopes last season and for the most part it showed today. They certainly didnt dictate play like they did that night, but nor (thanks to Big Mac) did they roll over and accept the result after it went 2-0.
Ultimately we could and should have made it more ourselves, but Jussi Jaaskalainen will be proud of his son tonight after his second half display - Washington really unfortunate not to be on the scoresheet after a typically tireless performance.
But hey, lets not carried away, this win shouldnt be blown out of preportion, same as how the defeat against Wigan shouldnt have been blown out of preportion - We're never going to be in a relegation fight, and if thats us finally getting going then great... Its what we need to show on a consistent basis if not more (as we were a bit too lax at times) if we want to be fighting up the top, these are the teams that we have to beat if we want to eventually be up there, improvements against the Oxfords / Wigans etc. is what'll be needed if we want to stay up there.
Improvement still needed, not just with the squad but on the pitch, but hopefully on the right track after that.
20 years ago we were complaining at only getting a point against Arsenal . Tonight we are giving it the proverbial large for managing to broach Crewe Alexandra's woeful defence twice in an hour and a half.
In my dictionary this is the definition of the word tragic.
The players came to work and ...did their job today. And no more. As Roy Keane would say "should we congratulate the postman for posting the letters!!?"
And bringing injury prone Arter in is a strange one. If he suddenly becomes fit for the first time in 5 seasons ... Then it is another master stroke from the Gallen.

What do you suggest?
Some would argue not being able to be happy after a win is a better definition of tragic
Good game. One of those matches that easily could’ve ended 6-3. We carried much more goal threat which is largely why we looked better. Some of that is undoubtedly because Crewe were not great but you beat what’s in front of you. You could see the confidence growing and that shone a light on some of the potential in this team.
Lots an lots still to work on… we needed 4 good saves from CM and two goal line clearances from Albie to preserve the clean sheet and, in particular, although we got in behind a lot we were very wasteful with the ball come the final pass, especially in the second half. There was one fantastic save from Stockley’s header and Washington should’ve done better with a couple of opportunities but other than that we didn’t covert enough of our good positions into shots. It was one of Bowyer’s main criticisms of the players last season as well.
The green shoots of recovery were there though. Hopefully a few more reinforcements in the next few days to complete the puzzle and this can become a launching pad for the rest of the season.
I thought everyone had a decent game, my only slight disappointment was Kirk wasn’t more to the fore given how open the game was, but he wasn’t anonymous either. Morgan I thought had an excellent match and hopefully quietend some of the criticism which hasn’t been unfounded but has definitely been overblown. Gunter’s beat game for us as well, I think he largely been highest disappointing for us but was great today. CM looking much more like the good keeper we were told we’d be getting, some good saves, dealt with a couple of crosses and soils with his kicking.
A good result but painting over the cracks as a poor Crewe team. Gunter had a great game but is lacking when up against an attacking threat. Conor had a great game. Albie played better in his natural position but still think we need an upgrade there. It will be a problem if Stockley gets injured so need backup there. 2 or 3 incoming would be ideal.

There is still work to be done if we are to compete at top six level.

Much better performance albeit v a poor team missing Lowry and Tate as well as Kirk
The often overlooked Washington made the difference but lots of solid performances.
Just as there were huge overreactions to the poor results and performances it's only one win v a bottom four side but it's three points and a start.
