Foakes standing up to Parkinson and Crane with a three-man seam attack (four including Stokes) would have been the bold way to take on Australia. I don't care if that means Robinson batting at 7. Him, Crane and Broad have enough natural ability that if you ask them to bat like batsmen they should be able to make a half-decent effort

You want it bolder? Buttler plays as a batsman and opens with Hameed. Failing that, James Vince does
Buttler just does not have the concentration levels required for Test cricket. How many days does he do keeping for 90 overs in the County Championship? Doing for 50 overs with a white ball that doesn't move after the first half a dozen overs is totally different. Taking a fantastic one handed catch does not make up for dropping two others.
Agreed...also add lack of ability..the longer the game the greater both matter ...that's probably the worst mistake from a keeper I have seen in top class cricket..infact trying to remember a worse one in club cricket

He is a batsman who has turned himself into being a keeper too. You will, no doubt, know Ray Willis who was responsible for coaching not just his son (Simon) who played for Kent but also Billings, Robinson and Cox and all of those are very good keepers. When Seb first played for Kent at the age of 11 he was a batsman/leggie but got fed up with not doing anything in the game so told Kent he wanted to keep. They sent Seb to Ray for him to test his hand to eye co-ordination. It is thanks to him that his keeping has got him where it has. The irony is that the keeping has contributed to holding his batting back.
2010/11 the resounding memory I have is how many wickets we got bowled. Anderson, Tremlett Bresnan and Finn all hit the stumps. Why have we not worked out our lengths!? Are we not a professional team? if the players are too stupid to work it out? What are the coaches and analysts doing????
I think England need some more analysts to analyse the current analysts
Graham Thorpe: "we stuck at it well... blah, blah vacuous BS, economy rate"
Stuck at what FFS???
Banging it in too short to hit the stumps and too wide for the batters to need to play. Both wickets to fall were comically thrown away by the batters, Harris strangles himself to a leg side long hop and Warner flogs a long hop straight to cover. The one clear cut created opportunity went begging when the 'keeper grassed a dolly. Australia plodded along at 2.5 rpo cos they couldn't reach half of the deliveries, the ground is huge on 3 sides and the grass is lush - loads of 3's run.
Thorpe again :"Warner and Labuschagne played very well and made it very hard for us - every time we went up to the bat, we got punched down the ground." No shit sherlock, fielders at mid-on and mid-off mop that up all day long! Make 'em drive, take a risk to create his own angles, make him lift the ball over the ring. Fuck's sake it's schoolboy level. GT was a talented player for sure but this transparent drivel is as baffling as it is humiliating.
Even the Adelaide chief groundsman was confidently predicting the match over inside 4 days, he's looking forward to a day off.
proper test match batting from Australia, they at least appreciate that the game lasts for five days, they'll wear down the bowlers and then rely on England imploding again, though without having to face Hazlewood and Cummins that won't be so easy (we hope) England's bowlers stuck at it well but the four over the wicket seamers were very samey, reverting to bodyline with Ben Stokes was innovative and at least saw the back of Warner. England had no luck, though luck can't be blamed when your keeper drops a regulation snick. Keep right on to the end of the road ..
I know our batting is a mess but it really gone under the radar how many runs/games our years of abysmal fielding is costing us
I've already mentioned how little red ball keeping Buttler does but I also wonder how many times do our fielders actually stand at slip outside Test matches?
The Aussies have a much higher regard of fielding in general compared to over here but, more to the point, their top players play not just Sheffield Shield but also Club cricket - I've counted seven current or former Australian internationals (including both Head and Carey) who have been playing for their clubs in Adelaide this season plus another dozen past and present Australian U19s and more than 40 who have played for Sheffield Shield and/or for a franchise in the Big Bash - whereas most of our boys don't go anywhere near the County Championship and would simply laugh at the prospect of playing Club cricket.
The final session tomorrow will be key. If England collapse we will lose inside 4 days. Bat well and we could escape with a draw. The 1st scenario is probably favourite.
One day gone out of 5. Aussies only have 220. Does no one think we can win this one ?
well .. the Aussies are without their two best bowlers (Lyon is still there though) and that really weakens them .. nothing is impossible, however I am not putting any of my hard earned on an England win

I really rate Jhye Richardson. Hope I'm wrong about him!

But they’re only two down and it’s a flat pitch. Do you see us taking eight quick wickets tomorrow? Of course not. They will bat at their leisure, score at least 400 which, with our batting, means that we will not win.
Our tactics were horrible today and we seem to doing our upmost to ensure that we lose this series 5-0….
Having seen the first days play, my mind has not changed with regards to old Mitch Johnson putting pressure on us by saying day/night tests favour England. Management have been baited hard and completely ballsed this up as a result. First test of the series with the conditions as they were, you play your best bowlers. Aus have a perfect record in day/night tests so thinking we could try and escape from the the Gabba anything less than 1-0 down and believing we would be favourites to win in Adelaide is dumbfuckery of the highest order.

We were in defence mode from the outset. Setting negative field settings to negative bowling. I can only think that someone came up with the bright idea of starving them of scoring opportunities for as long as possible into the final session when they could, with conditions more suitable, bowl a more attacking line and length. Trouble is that we didn't even do that then because the bowlers were too knackered in that heat to make the most of that time.
What's the bet Australia bat for two sessions, rack up 450 plus and then put us in the twilight with their bowlers fresh?

Strange world innit.
221-2.
Labuschagne 95 n/o
Smith 18 n/o

Starc will be lethal, you imagine
