  • 284-2 declared off 88

    Robinson 36* (62)
    Stevens 32* (37)

A pleasing workout with most of the seven batsmen taking the opportunity to utilise the time available in the middle for the first time this season

  • Any reason why muyeye wasn’t involved? Was looking forward to him pushing on this year

I genuinely don't know but I suspect it's because the likes of Crawley, Compton, Denly, Leaning, Cox, Billings, DBD, Cox and Robinson are all in front of him - that's nine players chasing just six batting spots without even including Muyeye. I say six places because Linde and Stevens will bat at 7 and 8 with Bird (and then Henry later in the season) being one of the other three bowlers - and we have anything up to nine bowlers for those two remaining spots too.

We currently have the most competitive of squads in living memory with a total of 25 players contracted to us. That strength probably means that it is a difficult place for a young and up and coming player to be though we will need them because once that other "competition" kicks in as we will lose up to a dozen players - meaning that we might still have to use non contracted players for the Royal London as we did last season especially in the batting department as Crawley, Denly, Billings, Cox, Blake and DBD (possibly even Leaning too) will all be missing from county action.

Indeed Jas did but I suspect the lack of reaction wasn't just because this is a friendly - he's gone for 42 in 4 overs

In fact, having watched the above footage rather than the stream, you can actually see that he looks the unhappiest man in the world having bowled an England opener by the way he refuses to acknowledge any congratulations

That shows that he has a good attitude and it bothers him when he is under performing

Jas will never fool himself. He knows he is a long way away from being the finished article. He is only 19 and needs a good summer of playing 2s cricket working on his game with the odd match perhaps in the Royal London
  • At tea Warwicks are 236-2 off 59 overs. We have used 9 bowlers so far including the likes of Jas, O'Riordan and Muyeye who weren't in the batting line up. There is one player conspicuous by his absence with the ball and that is Stevens.
  • Warwickshire pass our total of 284 off 75 overs for the loss of just 3 wickets - meaning that only 5 players in total were out in the two days

Warks probably only agreed to play the match on the condition that Stevo didn't bowl. They wanted to score some runs  :)

  • Today is the next warm up game for us against Middlesex at Merchant Taylors School. Can't find any team news for us but this is the Middlesex 12:

    Tim Murtagh (captain)

    Martin Andersson

    Josh De Caires

    Stephen Eskinazi

    Max Harris

    Tom Helm

    Luke Hollman

    Ishaan Kaushal

    Daniel O'Driscoll

    Sam Robson

    John Simpson

    Thilan Walallawita

A mixture of experience and youth - there are at least four who are 20 or less. In addition to Atherton's son, Josh De Caires, Seb has played against Harris, Kaushal and O'Driscoll in the last couple of years and the bowling attack as a whole doesn't look particularly threatening

  • Atherton jnr opening
  • 51-1

Sam Robson caught by an unknown slipper off the bowling of Gilchrist
  • De Caires caught O'Riordan (who isn't even in the named 14) bowled Podmore 19 off 64 balls, a scoring rate that proves the old adage that "the acorn never falls far from the tree"
  • 85-3 off 35

    Simpson c Compton b Quinn 16

Earlier catch was taken by Cox
  • Many thanks for the updates, AA.

Busy here with POTY issues but will endeavour to keep an eye on the stream.

You turn over to watch the cricket and horseracing only to find that Middlesex have lost another three wickets - three to Gilchrist, two to Podmore and one to Quinn

    108-6

Who needs Lord Stevens? (who hasn't bowled again)
  • 116-7

    One to Milnes

    Everybody needs God.

However, they can all bugger off.

    He's ours.

    And their nightmare.
  • 130-8

Qadri joins the party. Not sure that we were meant to bat today!
  • 148-9

    2nd wicket to Quinn
  • Interestingly Cox took over to keep this afternoon. Robinson didn't look like he was injured and it might be just to give Cox some practice
  • 148 -10

    2nd wicket to Qadri

Middlesex are carrying on batting, presumably for the day. De Caires and Robson back in again.
  • The only one of our six bowlers not to take a wicket is Stewart. Can't complain too much because his figures to date are 11-8-10-0

That's common practice in such practice games. Especially with the weather tomorrow being good, so both teams will get a day of batting and bowling
  • Interesting that we used nine bowlers in the last game but just six in this to date and they've all bowled at least 9 overs
  • This is getting only slightly less embarrassing for Middlesex than it is for England at present.

    174-15

4 wickets each for Gilchrist, Quinn and Podmore
  • 193-16 close of play

    Milnes 9-2-25-1
    Stewart 15-10-16-0
    Podmore 15-9-19-4
    Gilchrist 14-2-51-4
    Quinn 15-2-37-4
    Qadri 13-1-41-3
    Muyeye 1-1-0-0
