Strangest thing was seeing Harry Arter get roughed up by the Villa players. They gave him one or two pretty heavy knocks and he looked glad to come off!

That challenge at the end looked naughty from where I was sitting and Arter took his shinpad off as he went to show Jackson what I would assume were stud marks.

I think Arter could be a real good player for us if he got a run in the team - a shame for him that Dobson has done so well.
Arter was chasing shadows for the entire second half. His natural skill saw him able to distribute short passes effectively in the first half when he wasn't slipping over unchallenged or scuffing corners into the ground. He has gone as a viable first-team footballer, completely gone. If we have to use him in the league we are stuffed. He will retire at the end of his Forest contract, guaranteed, unless a National League (or lower) team decides to help him out.
    Righto.
  • Bakrin must be hungry for a pro contract!

    No Barker anywhere I see.
  • back on the winning trail .. good work out for many 'fringe' squadies against a tidy bunch of Villa young men .. everyone showing super tenacity under JJ

Mason’s goal was so classy. You don’t expect that sort of instant finish at this level.
Downside (there always seems to be one) is that the coverage of the goal will get seen by endless flippin’ scouts, agents, coaches, managers and directors of football all over the flippin’ country. Shudder.
Really good win, btw. Shows why a rubbish tournament like this actually has its uses on occasions. Players like Watson need a runout (did well) and others like Henry get a chance to show what they can do. Unfortunately poor old Morgan was disappointing again, apart from a couple of good passes and a good free kick.
Mate of mine scouts on a part time basis for professional clubs.

I mentioned Burstow to him recently and asked if he had heard of him. He laughed and said all the big boys were well aware of him and he was probably already on the radar of a number.

You really don't have to worry that a goal scored on charlton TV in a PJT brings Burstow to the big boys' attention!
Can’t believe you’d mention him to your scout mate Fortune. Jeez!

My point wasn’t so much that they’d see the highlights, (I’m aware that their networks spread far and wide) but that it was such a classy finish it’ll add more evidence of ability to those keeping tabs on him. I’d rather he scored a few taps-ins for now, and kept goals like that for playoff finals or the Premier League, when we make it there in two years time ;-)

Joking apart, one of the biggest bummers of being in the lower leagues is watching the likes of Gomez, Lookman and Aribo moving on so swiftly, and hopefully one of the benefits of having an owner like Thomas is we should be able to hang on to them for longer - Elerewe signing a contract was a recent positive.

Working back from an injury I believe.

Watching Bakrin and Elewere together, Bakrin looks just as good. Possibly better on the ball

I was thinking that. Both of them times I have seen them play together been equally impressed with both of them.
  • Well, one has just got a pro contract and the other seen him receive one!
  • sounds like a good run out - eaxctly what a reserve match should be / used to be - a mixture of youth and experience and players trying to sharpen up for the first team

  • Any word on Henderson's fitness?  Seems odd he didn't play, a useful run out before Friday's more important cup game.
  • Nothing personal against Stephen Henderson, but does he use up a squad place, and is he vital to our forward progress?
Watching Harness coming through has been very similar to Rob Elliott, Darren Randolph and Dillon Phillips.

Keepers don’t count to squad numbers

He was on the bench Saturday so must be over the concussion.  A SLP piece indicated he would play Friday, makes sense to give Harness the Pizza games at the minute particularly as he is playing well

I was trying to get a cut of the transfer fee :-)

Totally agree with you about how frustrating it is watching the likes of Gomez, Lookman, Aribo (add in Shelvey) breaking through then moving on so quickly. We can't even seem to hold onto them for a season now before they go on to "better" things.

But sadly, I don't think that will improve under TS. Whatever contract he can offer, a Premier League club can offer 10 times that. At least. And with agents pushing the kid to move, I fear things won't change in the near future.

Our only hope is to try and get as high up in the football pyramid as we can and secondly, try and tie the best of the best down with a 2 or 3 year contract (like we've done with Elerewe) so when we have to sell them, we can at least get a decent fee.

Sad but it's always been that way at Charlton and I suspect always will be until an oil-producing state decides to buy us.

It makes sense to be honest. Henderson is there to provide experienced backup. If Mac were to get injured Henderson would come in to cover. There's not a lot to be gained by giving Henderson game time compared to Harness who we want to develop, but it's a big risk to ask Harness to come in in the league for an extended period if Mac is out. Hendo exists in that weird inbetween zone where he won't play irrelevant matches like this but he serves an important purpose in the squad
  • We will find out who we play after the draw takes place on Saturday. I can't wait!

That was his brother Caleb who played last night

Some surprising results there. Hartlepool are terrible away in the league, while Oldham are a basket case club.

Yes, Wednesday and Sunderland will have rested players, but so will Hartlepool and Oldham

They are brothers! Caleb played at the Valley last night and Carney at Villa Park this evening.

    Northern section draw:

Bolton, Carlisle, Rotherham, Wigan, Hartlepool, Oldham, Crewe, Tranmere/Harrogate

    Southern section draw:

Cambridge, Charlton, Chelsea U21, MK Dons, Sutton, Colchester, Arsenal U21, Exeter/Portsmouth

I could be wrong but I believe they will keep Chelsea and Arsenal apart.
  • Some big teams have gone out tonight! Look forward to the draw on Saturday

Well that's just confusing. One of them should have to wear a (no, not that one) sticker next to his name. Thought it was impressive!

That explains why Chris Gunter wasn't very good last night. It was actually his brother Colin playing for us...

Living in Norwich, I had hoped that all of Ipswich, Cambridge and Colchester got through to give me a 3/7 chance of being able to easily travel to a match in next round if I wanted

Cambridge and Colchester obliged....but Ipswich contrived to blow a 65th minute 2-0 lead and let Arsenal U21s get through to the next round...

    Grrrrr....
  • Are U21s allowed to play at home in the next round?
