  • Loving this attendance banter btw. Surprised millwall hold than own in it, didn't appreciate how well supported they were. Guess it changed for both clubs when people started having one team.

Also surprised to see Blackpool only once in the home and away table and no Stoke. I thought if Stanley Matthews was in town the ground would be rammed. Guess we weren't in the same division?

Yeah, as I said earlier, 11th best supported club in the country at the end of the 1930’s and one of the wealthiest apparently.

Good point about it changing when people started having just one club. Would explain a lot, attendances dropping suddenly. Football definitely changed and turned more tribal in the 50’s and 60’s. This bought about the hooliganism of the 70’s and crowds dropped even more because of that.

Of course at home to WHU league Cup 1976 should be on that list for sure, probably Spurs 1977 and QPR league Cup 1975 too.

All about avoiding tax by the club and ticket money by bunking fans.
That WHU game I remember well I was 15 and being late into the ground ran straight into my normal spit in the covered end and once in realised that it was totally full of WH fans. Shit myself the whole game 🤭
Me and my mates were literally kicked out of the Covered End by the Mile End lot once we started singing  … one of the rare times we lost the Covered End.
Didn’t Millwall always go in the covered end in numbers? Before my time (doing away games anyway) but heard that we did.
They always got in but didn’t always have the entire end … for that Hamsters game, we were kicked out completely.

They sneaked in early and quietly, nobody knew they were there until they starting humming and singing blowing bubbles. Then it was too late and you didn’t know if you were the only charlton in the middle of them. Got to hand it to them though.

It used to just kick off everywhere all around the ground. The only time I can recall them basically completely having the covered end was when they almost went up and we got relegated and it was our last home game of the season and rearranged for the Tuesday night. I suspect most of them were plastics and at their first and last game but through sheer numbers they did an impressive version of singing  of ‘Millwall’ to the tune of amazing grace or sailing (can’t remember which one).
  • Whilst agreeing that a "friendly" rival is healthy I can never understand the Addams Family song being song to the spanners (or any team within a 10 mile radius).

You never met a Millwall fan then ?
  • Spanners have gone quiet.

  • My late neighbour had lived in his house in Lewisham since it was built in the 50s, he would have been born in the early 30s.  After he died his wife told us he used to go Millwall and Charlton alternate weekends when he was younger. Quite a few did I think.

Amazing grace. If I say so myself, unforgettable even all these years later.
  • my Uncle took me and my brother To Charlton and Millwall games on alternate weekends in the early 70's, my bruv still supports Millwall,
I took the better option (-:

Supposedly 36,000 for the West Ham game, I certainly thought well over 40,000 myself and definitely the biggest Valley crowd Ive been in, bigger than the Tottenham fake crowd number too.

Not many teams can claim they did back then, Sheffield Wednesday were in the Covered End by 2pm circa 74, so impossible to get them out. West Ham, your lot, Chelsea, Spurs. One of my earliest memories of crowd trouble was around 1967-68 when QPR had a go, but eventually got kicked out. Cardiff in about 76 had a good go, but came off worse, especially after the game. Lot of supporters from Sunderland, Pompey, Southampton on the South Terrace in the 70's

Likewise, I've never been to The Valley with a bigger crowd. I would say nearer 45,000.

Think this was the game when a dozen or so Millwall turned up and tried to take the Tottenham end on their own. 😆

It was 50k. I got that on the night after the match from the person responsible for counting the money.

'add 15k to that figure' when we chatted about the attendance.
  • Quote from their forum :-

Home stands will be full of Palace, always is

    😂😂

I am sure @MillwallFan and @Big_Bad_World can enlighten us
Utter bollocks. I’ve not missed a Millwall v palace game in about 40 odd years and I’ve never known any of them to be in the home ends.

You’ll obviously get a few come along with their Millwall mates and sit on their hands, like we do when we play you lot, but as for the home ends being full of palace, never heard such nonsense in all my life.
You lot keeping quiet in the Charlton end? Hmmmm
Ha, yeah what I meant was whenever the three SE London clubs (well, two SE London clubs and palace) play each other you’ll always get mates tagging along with each other and going in the opponents end etc. a respectful silence should be kept, but granted, not everyone sticks to the rules 😆
Went to watch Millwall v QPR two seasons ago. Walked into the upper tier to be greeted with a hail of abuse. "What you doing here you Charlton XXXX." With half the stand now looking at me I said "I have come to support my second team" which caused even more abuse. Mates eh?
    Your second team ????????????????????????
    They all knew the score.

I think it was. It wasn’t the Tottenham end though, it was our end that they had already taken. I think Millwall being there was set up for the Panorama doc though wasn’t it?

Biggest fake crowd I've seen & I was at all those mentioned was palarse in the cup 68/69. I think they announced it as 32k  :D:D:D
  • It was amusing when the crowd was announced for that Tottenham cup replay (Ronnie Moore late penalty in a 2-1 defeat I believe) you could hear the groans and laughter everywhere.
I think there was a safety limit of some 21k imposed on the Valley at the time, so the official gate had to fit that rule.
It was an Emperors new clothes moment.
