One of my friends who coaches at Ipswich believes Defoe wants to be in or around London.
hopefully thats the only reason he's being linked with us
What, apart from the only other clubs interested seem to be Oxford and Sunderland..looks like it could be on maybe with a short term contract till end of season and go from there..
Wouldnt have a problem with a player/coach role, even if the coaching one is with the U23 for the time being. Then if he trains with the first team and JJ thinks he can still do it, then put him in the matchday squad.
Chuks and Defoe up top I’ve no doubt will score goals in this shitty league. I’ve a feeling there’s a certain commercial drive behind anyone pursuing Defoe however.

so what does he do when premier league teams are sniffing around our youngsters? tell them to stay just like he didn't? advise them to sign a contract so the club can command a fee for him just like he didn't?
nah, i refer you all to my post earlier in the thread

"defoe can get fucked"
Defoe comes across as a pretty decent guy. I'm certainly not gonna define his whole career and footballing personality on a decision made with his mum when he was 16.

He's still take a squad place though, and I don't think we can afford giving one to an occasional player
Defoe was on TalkSport this morning and I suspect that the theory he wants to be in or around London is plausible.
I thought when Simon Jordan mentioned it that it wasn't a random rumour just put out there. I see no harm in a short term contract which could develop into a coaching role.
Sky reporting it makes it more legit. Initially I thought Defoe would choose Sunderland all day, but getting back to London might just give us an edge if we are serious in getting him in?

FWIW i think he's got the ability to do a bit of damage in this league. He made 20 appearances for Rangers last season.
"When I left Charlton as a 16 year old, I always hoped I would return one day. And now as I end my playing career, and start a new exciting phase in my football life, it seems fitting that I'm returning to where it all began."

But for how long? If he's looking to continue playing until the end of next season there could be some value. If it's just this season I don't see any point in signing him.

There’s only one way to find out….

Defoe
Keane
Hasselbaink
We get too excited with a name at Charlton. Really wouldn't have learnt anything from Arter, Watson, Gunter etc.

etc.
