Is he even a good coach? He has 3 months experience and was let go by Rangers.

On paper he should be good, just hope it’s not just a job for mates.

Jacko, Euelly & Defoe has the base of a great vets 5 aside Team ☺️
I hope there's nothing in this, but if he can do a job coaching it could be the difference for our next generation of forwards.

A difficult one but, I would not want him as a player. It goes against everything we have said we are working towards.

One of my friends who coaches at Ipswich believes Defoe wants to be in or around London.
Funny that after Sunderland and Glasgow.
Surely that makes more sense now then? Now his career is winding down he may want to be back in London.
  • no rumours then?
A youth team loanee and maybe somebody near x2.5 his age are the only rumours at present.

It makes sense for the player but that could be why we should avoid signing him. Will the motivation be there?

Watson got his move home and isn’t the player who played almost every game for Forest and narrowly missed out on the Championship playoffs.

Imo you are either a natural finisher or you are not. Yes, you can be taught when to make runs & how to strike a ball.....but players like Defoe, Owen, Fowler, Rush its just instinct

    And practice.

What on earth do we want a 39YO striker who once screwed us.

A Totally pointless, short term, panic signing.

I don’t know what this club and fanbase obsession is with ex players?

We need to move on, break the cycle and sign fresh, hungry, young players.
I’m not totally disagreeing with you but that 39 year old striker who once screwed us could be the difference between league 1 and league 2 football next season. I suspect the Stockley injury might be the reason for even perhaps a panic buy. No Stockley no goals. Defoe could be the best option out there at the moment.
    Agree with this.

Stockley is out and Aneke has been proven to be unable to play 90mins Saturday/ Tuesday / Saturday

so you don’t think there might be a requirement for a starter?

Why would you be an advocate to having 2 strikers that potentially can’t play 90 when your main man is injured?

it’s a short term panic signing based on his reputation rather than what he’s actually capable of nowadays
I completely agree with the point that Chuks can't play 90 minutes week in, week out so why sign a 39-year-old as well.

This season is dead, we should be building for next year and bringing in someone who will be 40 for our next campaign doesn't seem like a great idea.
The season isn't dead though is it, in terms of the playoffs it is but with one point and two goals in our last four league games and only 6pts from the relegation zone I am certainly looking over my shoulder.
Would Defoe score goals and get us to safety,? As likely or more probable as anybody who we could get in a January transfer window. Personally, I want to get this season over with and whoever comes in to keep us from a possible drop to L2 will do for me. More opportunity for younger, fitter and hungrier forwards in the next transfer window.

It’s a good point - do we bring in short term signings to ensure we’re nowhere near relegation with the intention of finding better value in the summer? Our top targets might be available in June but not this month.
  • 'Imminent' doesn't mean soon necessarily in Charlton circles   :D

It would make sense to try and bring someone in by lunchtime, so that he is available for tomorrow

Another striker would be nice with Stockley injured, Washington's hamstrings clearly vulnerable, Chuks needing to be managed, Mason just a kid and Davison out of favour...
  • 80% win rate required from now to the end of the season to reach the playoffs - that would be a miracle.  20 games left we’d have to win 16 games - this season is surely gone ?

With appointments of a new coach and bringing back Aneke on a long term deal it looks
like we are building for a charge next year

Perhaps Defoe could help bring through and develop the strikers we’ve always been missing

would be in line with our strategy of developing talent
  • Charlton Athletic are prepared to listen to loan offers for Charlie Kirk.

The 24-year-old winger was signed in the summer from Crewe after the Addicks triggered a £500,000 release clause in his contract.

I'd be happy with a loan move, rather than permanently binning him after 5 months

Apart from anything else, if he does do well on loan, it should increase the fee we can get, if we do sell him in the summer

Kirk’s situation is similar (not exact) to Dobson’s last season. Dobson did well for Walsall and signed for Sunderland but then never quite fitted in there. A loan to Wimbledon got him playing again and got him his move to us.

A good local (to him) loan for him could do him the world of good. Then we can make that call in the summer to see if he’s better off heading to new pastures or staying and trying again with us.

Based on the last famous use of the term,  it's about three years.

Id be disappointed if its more than a loan - Cant write him off that quickly
Agreed. I would try and send him to league 2 to a team that plays 3-5-2 with him playing in the Lee role

    Why a League Two team?

Because it's an unfamiliar role to him and taking a step back (lower league) will help him familiarise himself in the role with a bit less pressure on him.

what if we send him to Fleetwood and he keeps them up at our expense
  • Crewe might as well have him back on loan, they know how to use him and he knows the place.
  • Crewe might as well have him back on loan, they know how to use him and he knows the place.
Would that benefit us long term? It would free up a squad space shorter term allowing us to sign a player that fits our system but we will be getting the same Charlie Kirk back in the summer. He needs to go away and learn some new skills

Crewe play a different shape to when he was there last season and have been using wing-backs. They have made contact with us regarding a loan but it does seem a bit bizarre given I'm not sure how he'd fit into their side at the minute.
