So was he 8th, 9th or 10th choice..........

What a joke....... sacked Jackson for this........ I really give up. All will have been done on a spreadsheet, just like RD he'll never learn, too pig/big headed.

Can confirm they're still interviewing. Doesn't seem as set in stone as it appears.
    Huh?
Mentioned Garner to sandgaard just now and be responded saying btw we're still interviewing...

It was always going to be announced before June 1st. No way could Thomas not give the new manager 3 weeks or so before the first day of training and working with Steve Gallen to see the list of players plus what the "black box" suggests !

I would imagine Ben Garner was our 3rd or 4th choice. Michael Beale wouldn't apply twice to be mentioned as a yardstick.
And Warburton like a challenge but Cafc might just have been a challenge too far.
Matt Taylor saw some people say the Cafc job was too big for him and decided to stay in Exeter where he is in credit and appreciated.

I wish Ben Garner good luck and a thick skin as the Charlton fan base are so flakey and punch drunk after the last decade or so he is slagged off before he even gets here.
I hope he doesn't read Twitter as I can only imagine what that cesspit would say.

We are a mid table League 1 team and how ever great and 'massive' the fans think we are, the league table said we are mediocre.
Many thanks to JJ for at least getting us to mid table from 22nd.

Ben Garner now needs to be backed by TS. and he gets players who can adapt to his style and formation of play. The Charlton managers job feels like a poisoned chalice.
Big team syndrome means he won't have a honeymoon period at the valley.

We all want to get to the championship but so do the other 6 "Big teams" in the 3 tier.

Mid-table mediocre League One team appoints good League Two manager, hold the front page!

He wouldn’t have been top of the shortlist and I don’t feel excited but by far it’s not the most uninspiring appointment we’ve ever had in our recent history. Let’s just see how it goes.

I’m not Sandgaard’s biggest fan but the reaction on here is pretty negative. We’ve gotta give Garner a chance here and a lot dismissing him have probably never watched a team of his. Palace or not, pretty good experience as a first team coach at a good level. The big plus for me is that he’s being allowed to bring his own coaching staff with him.

Good luck to him. Sandgaard has to back him in the transfer market.
That’s the bottom line really - whoever comes in needs a few quality reinforcements. Garner’s stats look decent, but he’d have to be an alchemist to get the current squad anywhere

Good luck to him, impressive stats and has previously put together a squad in a hurry. Don’t understand why it’s taken so long however and hope he has input in terms of recruitment and a team available for pre seasons.

Hopefully TS has a prog metal anthem already penned to encourage him……

I feel more persuaded by this appointment than I did about dear Nigel Adkins, so for me that's a start.
I wish him well, why not? If he does well we do well.
    What will his chant be?

We got him cos he’s cheap,

You should co write with Sandgaard!

Uninspiring to say the least. My guess is 3rd choice at best, probably 4th or 5th. Let’s hope he proves TS right and us wrong.

Swindon only played their Play Off game on Thursday - interviews, compensation to be agreed etc etc and TS was almost certainly talking to other candidates in the interim

I just hope that if he sees a player jumping out of a tackle, he makes him captain in the next game

I want a young, progressive, attacking coach.

    nO nOt ThAt OnE!!!

Some people need a reality check.

IMO this is a very good appointment.  You will be surprised.
I'd have given JJ more time, and of course we don't know how his might have looked after a transfer window, but IMO he's not the type to get a team dominating possession while also being the leagues top scorers. He was similar to Powell in that way for me - aim to get a team motivated and organised, rather than stand out as a coach improving players, a great tactician or someone who has a philosophy of attractive football. Nothing wrong with that as it's worked for us in the past, but plenty of us were fed up of teams like Cambridge and Cheltenham outpassing us weren't we?

Really hope you're right. Good sign that he appears to be bringing his two assistants.

So hold on. Was our main reason for getting him in because he got 7 or 8 players in at short notice and did alright?

    Unfathomable.

Hmmmmm something doesnt add up rich cawley wouldnt put all that out there and in depth if he wasnt sure

maybe sandgaard wants to gauge the reaction first or hes going to keep offer on table to garner knowing hes accepted and choose over next couple days with whoever else

Neither did MK Dons with similar stats, maybe we should have gone for Ainsworth?

Swindon website makes it clear he was only part of their recruitment team. They appointed him and a DoF on th same day.

    https://www.swindontownfc.co.uk/news/2021/july/new-director-of-football-and-head-coach-appointed/

I want a director of football and head coach model rather than a traditional manager because I want continuity to run through the club. If the head coach moves on, the philosophy of the club carries on and the playing squad does not need to be a complete overhaul. The Head coach will be part of the process of recruiting players.
