The formation our current squad suit the most is undoubtedly 3-5-2.

REG, Jones and Gillesphey all seemingly prefer to be part of a back three. We have so many midfield options it’s almost embarrassing and a number of forward options that would make most other teams in the league jealous.

Focusing the majority of our XI through the middle of the pitch and foregoing wing play makes sense for the squad we have.

Other formations… A 4-4-2 diamond still requires a number 10 that we don’t have and a traditional 4-4-2 requires proper wingers that we also don’t have.

If you don’t rate our wing backs then fair enough but at least we have the options in those positions.

I don’t quite understand wanting a high press and a 3-5-2. It’ll never work. If you want press high, it should be a 4-3-3 or variation of.
Worked pretty well for Nathan Jones at Luton?

We need to avoid thinking that you can’t play exciting football without wingers. Bowyer’s promotion winning team had no wingers - and I know which team I’d rather watch week in week out out of that one and some of the recent sides that have had with wingers in …
Yes, but the big thing you are overlooking is the fact this Charlton has ZERO creative players.

When a diamond is spoken about the need for good wing backs and 10 understandably always comes up, but the strange thing about Bowyer’s team as well as the formation worked we didn’t really have either.

At RB we had a declining Solly and Dijksteel learning the position (he had been a DM) while settling into first team football. Page was promising at LB but got injured so we didn’t have a natural LB until Purrington signed. He was solid and scored a few goals for us but didn’t have pace and wasn’t great going forwards.

In the 10 role we played Ward and rotated with others in the first half of the season, no one stood out in that position. Williams came in but didn’t usually play 90 minutes and I don’t think he got many goals or assists (if any).

Despite that we made it worked due to the players we had in other positions. We need to find a way to get enough points, that doesn’t mean we need the ideal player in every position. If the players have that way of thinking it just gives them an excuse, there’s enough ability here that we shouldn’t be going months without a clean sheet or a win.

All true, but we also had genuinely solid CBs in Pearce and Bauer, and Sarr who was a better ball player.  And the secret weapon was Bielik who was technically comfortable enough play the 4, but was also big enough to drop into the back line as an extra CB (which Dobson is less effective at).

This year we’ve played 4 at the back most of the season and have one of the worst defensive records in the league.

That team went on such a good run they were very close to automatic promotion. We don’t need a team as good as that, we just need to get enough points to stay up. Same point applies - we need to get the most out of what we have. Appleton was nowhere near that. Jones is a better and more tactically flexible manager so I’m expecting an improvement. Whether it’ll be enough we’ll see.

Sheffield United are set to win the race to sign Jesurun Rak-Sakyi on loan from Crystal Palace. The 21-year-old is poised for a medical with the Blades today

We'll be first in the queue if he fails it 😉
  • Was superb for the Blades on Saturday with 2 goals. Baffling why Palace loaned him out, after losing Olise, especially as they've been playing a centre forward Nketiah in wide positions.

Still can’t believe he didn’t go out last season, then would probably be ready for the PL

Obviously nothing else worked out or was priced out of a Championship move

Will certainly be character building for him.  No idea who they are, strange move from Charlton to Sunderland to Rizespor. Finished 9th last season. Located by the Black Sea.

Can see him coming back in January.

As a footballer, I wouldn’t be buzzing if I was sent all the way to Western Turkey, especially when there was a load of Championship interest.

Can't fault anyone that just wants to play, wherever that might be.

They also have clinics to make you taller, so maybe he’s interested in that.

Keep the ball out of the net against Spain

Or part of the plan so he won’t fail the Charlton life height test when he back and we sign him on a perm next season
  • That is a shocking move, I'd be getting rid of my agent, if I'm going from the top-end of the Championship, to the backwaters of Turkey.
