I havent read this thread so apologies if it has already been mentioned.
But I have seen alot of talk over the last few days on why Football was cancelled but other sports were not and everyone seems to be avoiding what to me is the obvious.
Police?
Football use alot more police than rugby or cricket and with different events accross the country paying respects to the queen over the last 48 hours maybe the policing would have been to stretched to cover football as well
may be a reasonable explanation for massive Premier League games with 60,000 people attending not going ahead. But unless things have changed since I was a kid I don’t think children’s games require a police presence!
Surely no one apart from the idiots in the FA think stopping kids football was the right thing to do.
You’d be surprised, some people seem to think they’re in a competition to show they can mourn the hardest. The FA have gotten this entirely wrong, but the point re policing that Paulie made is a fair one. There were probably a couple of Premier League matches that maybe should have been postponed but stopping all organised football across the country is ridiculous.
Let’s be honest, the cricket probably only went ahead because the ECB and Surrey would have lost all the revenue if they’d cancelled it. Unlike the football it couldn’t be rearranged.
Once the Test was on they could hardly stop recreational and other cricket. I doubt if the ECB was worried about ticket holders.
This may well be true, @Airman Brown, but it's also worth putting into the mix one other aspect, which is that the Oval is part of the Duchy of Cornwall. While Surrey CCC are the leaseholders, the ultimate beneficiary of revenues generated at the ground is William, Prince of Wales, who plays the Roland role.
That’s not really true unless the Duchy gets rent proportionate to revenue. Roland doesn’t get a payment for every ticket or other sale at The Valley, just a flat rate. He only gets more if the team reaches the PL. I doubt if the Duchy stood to gain from the match being played or not.
As a Surrey member I believe if my memory service me well when got an extended lease some time ago. The agreement was the Duchy got 2% of turn over in rent.

If policing was the reason then they should have said so. Not sure how many are needed for the under 11’s at the local park.
Rangers champions league game with Napoli that was on Tuesday has been moved back 24 hours and because of a lack of available police, UEFA have decided that Napoli fans now can't travel.
Because of this and to be fair to Napoli, UEFA have also decided that Rangers fans will now be banned from traveling to Naples for the return game. Decisions that basically stitch up everyone from both clubs who'd paid for a flight and hotel.

Why can't the police cope with away fans on Wednesday?
Glasgow is hardly the centre of Royal activity, and the body will leave Scotland on Tuesday anyway
Bomb risk. Bike frame packed with Semtex. Sounds OTT, but been considered a risk for decades.
Why is it more of a risk just because she's shuffled off this mortal coil in the last few days?
Publicity. And I was talking generally about bikes, not about the location, Norwich. But there will be lots of heads of state at the funeral, so quite a target. And I guarantee they won’t have bikes chained to the railings nearby. Personally I think it’s a very small risk, but I suspect the security services will think differently.

Perhaps some of the other police forces are having officers seconded to London.

No perhaps about it. By BIL works for Kent Police in the team that coordinates with other forces and other emergency services. The Met need 10,000 additional offers over the period of laying in state and the funeral itself. They've cancelled all leave and requested assistance from all the surrounding forces, and that'll expand to a nationwide request if that's not enough.
So at the moment we don’t know if games are going ahead this week.
I wonder when the authorities deign to bother telling us lowlife football supporters an answer. I’m not bothered either way but need to know as funnily enough I have other things going on.

I can't imagine Glasgow will send police to London, any issues will be with the events in Edinburgh on Tuesday
After all Liverpool's game vs Ajax is going ahead as per normal on Tuesday, with no ban on away fans

The EFL fixture programme will return as scheduled from Tuesday 13 September, with tributes to be paid to Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II at grounds around the country.
A minute’s silence will be held before matches, with black armbands to be worn by participants, flags to be flown at half-mast and the National Anthem to be played in stadiums.
With a national policing plan now in operation, the League and Clubs will continue to work with forces in respect of any challenges that may emerge regarding policing of specific fixtures.
Consideration to individual circumstances will be made on a case-by-case basis, in line with standard match Safety Advisory Group (SAG) protocols.
Bomb risk. Bike frame packed with Semtex. Sounds OTT, but been considered a risk for decades.
Why is it more of a risk just because she's shuffled off this mortal coil in the last few days?
Because there will probably be large groups of the public gathering to pay respects in the area.
Large public gatherings inevitably increases risk.
In Norwich?
From the looks of the news last night, Norwich was one of the places where there was a reading of the proclamation of the new King yesterday, so that'd be one reason for it. Probably anticipating queues to sign a book of condolence too.
Funerals cancelled. the funerals of ordinary citizens. Just listened to a woman on a radio phone-in describing how she was called yesterday by the crematorium where her mother was to be buried today. They said "we suppose you know why we are calling". She had no idea. When they told her, they were, she said "very matter-of -fact" in tone, and claimed that all crematoria are taking the same action. She had relatives flying in from the US, hotels booked etc.
Two questions
1. While we cannot presume to know our late Queen's mind, is there a single person on here who wants to suggest she would have been happy with this?
2. Who, exactly, needs to "get a grip" about random cancellations?
Just a little add on to this ‘policing’ issue. It’s not just about plod standing in a cordon ensuring public safety. Every public order event has to have qualified senior officers who are familiar with the location and possible risks it brings in order to properly deploy their officers. When I was arranging public order events they were always the most difficult positions to fill. Many had given in their ticket, the pool of choice was decreasing.
We may have enough for Tuesday night but the Bronzes (senior officers) might be new.
So, like the Olympics, it isn’t completely unheard of to have mutual aid from Police Scotland. In fact most of that summer, the Heddlu were the most recognised officers around Westminster.

When the London riots were kicking off Heddlu were on duty around Peckham (where I live). One night, after things had started to calm down but the Heddlu crewe were still on patrol, I was staggering along Rye Lane so pissed that they escorted me all the way home - great service!

Probably a lodge member trying to give rangers an advantage.

With fact - based posts like this I can see why games this coming Saturday might need to be called off.
The government should though be taking a lead. Given the existence of “London Bridge” I find it incredible that no equivalent plan for public events and guidance to citizens was already in place. Of course a decent government would anyway have had a senior minister taking charge of such things on Thursday, but this shower have of course been too busy playing with themselves for six weeks or more, and now seek to delect any responsibility. Lamentable.
I is also because of the big population countries of Europe we have the lowest number of police per head of population. We are nearer to the Baltic states for this than to France and Germany for example.

Arsenal PSV on Thursday is off. I assume due to the vast crowds of people visiting the Queen's coffin, and the security needed
