Another away draw and multi-goal thriller for the Addicks. But, like a Charlton defender, I really don’t have the capacity to tackle a full summary. So, here’s the match in a nutshell:

We went out and gained a two goal lead, thanks to a confident Charlie Kirk getting in behind Burton’s defensive line on the counter and finishing with impressive technique and skill. Towards the end of the second half, we conceded two goals in disappointing fashion.

In the second half, they peppered us! Craig G., filling in after a late finger injury to Jojo, kept us in it with multiple decent saves. They went ahead with a third goal and we seemed out of it. A few substitutions saw renewed effort. Chuks came on and immediately played a blinder, putting Rak-Saki through on goal. He looped the ball over the keeper to equalise.

We’re not good enough to dominate teams. The owner wished for exciting, end-to-end thrillers and he’s certainly got that. The problem is, we’re a few pieces of quality short to ensure we come out on top of these thrillers more often than not.

2 up against the bottom club, oh well, but looking at the stats we seem to have got away with a point. Onwards and upwards. Safe journey home.

Criminal to have gone it at HT 2-2!
Defence needs completely reevaluating in January - no way should lavelle be here, nor should innis be first choice!

Chin and Campbell way out of their depth, CBT had to start next game!

Stockley simply not up to it, and we don’t ever look like scoring with him on the pitch - Leaburn/transfer , it’s your position to lose!!!!

Sess was solid, Dobson not able to get into it, kirk did well for his goals- but at 2-2 you need players to take the game by the scruff of the neck he’s not that!
JFC did nothing when coming on, hard to argue against him being dropped- CBT/Aneke obviously our only threat- look forward to Clare back in the team soon!

Could have been 2 points off playoffs

So in response to Golfie, we start Chuks and CBT, they get us 2-0 up and tire... Then what?

We have far less impactful players to replace them.

This is a patched up defence and it shows but we need to sort out 3 things as a bloody priority. 1) Set pieces we need to ensure we don't have so many mismatches. Play a strict man to man if need be. 2) 2nd Ball, we lose too much of it and 3) Some clearances need to be hit and hope but when we can find our players we hardly ever have the composure to do so.

Not being able to beat a team that is rock bottom is simply not good enough.
It's a combination of two things
    1. The players ain't good enough
    2. They lack the mental strength to finish the job.

Either way there is only one person to blame and he's probably strumming his banjo somewhere in America.

We score 3 goals against the run of play. Generally poor. Fraser and Dobson particularly bad. Our defence so shaky. We are lucky to come away with a point.

    Goal scoring not our problem.

To the point where I’d be ok with trading a striker signing for another defensive option.

Centre back and full back top of the priority list at this moment in time.

  • That bit of play by Chuks to set up the 3rd goal was ridiculously good.

Only the top 4 teams in the league have scored more goals than us this season, and that’s with Stockley only managing 2 the whole campaign. We just need to steady the ship at the back, whilst picking up a competent centre forward in the window, and I still think we can make play offs.

Firstly also there’s no guarantee they will get us 2-0 up because games are always far less open for the first 60-70 minutes. We have seen CBT start and be nullified.

Secondly, there’s the likelihood that the extra minutes and running, especially against players who are not tiring could lead to them breaking down. We have seen Aneke unable to even complete a pre season starting matches.

At the moment it is what it is, and I’d be looking more at the other end of the pitch as to where our problems lie.

We are stuck in a limbo land of majority shitness with brief farts of expectation then a swift return to niggling stomach cramps.  We are more than comfortable in this latrine of a league sometimes getting off the pot just as the dropped bog roll rolls out under the cubicle door!

    Apart from that...

As I said, that was a pretty poor Charlton performance - Dobson's worst in a very long time, and Lavelle with the kind of display that should frankly see him dropped for one of the kids - but our 3 goals were all amongst the best we've scored all season. Utterly bizarre

  • Garner blaming the intensive schedule. Maybe a drawback of putting out relatively strong sides in all 3 cup games.

I agree with this.  I think we’re on course to achieve a similar season to last, albeit with nowhere near as bad a start, but we’re doing it in a different way and the games are slightly more entertaining.

There’s brief pockets of decent play, the odd good performance, individually and collectively, but I think we’re quite far off the pace when it comes to being a decent side.  You can argue that injuries have gone against us recently and I would agree, but take Kirk today as an example of our season.  Comes in and scores two, but we might have to wait until January again for him to repeat that.  CBT isn’t consistent enough, and our most effective player going forward can only come off the bench.  JRS hasn’t been setting the world alight recently but scores today so again, highlights an inconsistency very common to a lot of our players.

I think to enjoy this season, expectations will have to be lowered and you’d have to accept that the team isn’t strong enough to go on a sustained run, even when we win a few in a row.  For the 3 wins against Exeter, Pompey and Lincoln, we’ve now gone 3 without a win.

Frustrating to watch…I like Fraser but boy does he need a lot of time on the ball…Rak Saki needs to get his head up and pass had CBT wide open near the end…Innis and Lavelle a nightmare…Kirk scored 2 but bottles challenges half the time… MacG had a decent game but inspires no confidence in me….

We seem to look very good going forwards in the last 30 minutes of games...

Let’s be honest if Chuks could play 90 mins, he wouldn’t be playing for Charlton.
Aneke was fit when originally signed, wasn't he? If we had kept him fit we might not be in League 1 again.

Also we played Bonne ahead of him at times when he was fit... There's a player that I'd prefer not to see again... But...
  • Too poor defensively to make top six.

A draw before the game would have been a crap result. A draw after being 2-0 up is criminal.

There was one delightful through-ball Kirk played that 95% of strikers in this league would have latched onto. Stockley was about 3 yards behind it the whole way
I think as Garner gets toward a squad that he's comfortable with then the jury will return and Stockley will move on, it's a shame and I like him as a player, but we are clearly a greater threat with more mobility up front. For the moment he's captain and first choice, next season who knows perhaps there is a centre back in there, worked for Arthur Horsfield !

Not having been 3-2 down it isn't.

How about a draw after being 3-2 down?
