  • Surprised how little he’s been mentioned in this thread.

He needs to be moved on in January while he’ll still be seen as a good target man who just needs the right system.

He’s not offering more despite us playing two up front to give him a partner.

Yes we could do with signing a full back and centre back, but a decent striker with a bit of strength and pace would take pressure off the defence by being more of a threat with their movement and ability to hold up the ball.

I expect Victor Adeboyejo who scored Burton’s third goal would be more effective. Soccerbase shows they got him on a free, he’s only 24 and he’s scored 8 in 16 league starts.

Because the argument is kind of done by now.

Everyone knows he's not good enough, I'm sure even Garner and TS know that by now from these 'performances'.

Just a case of waiting until January to offload him to a side desperate for a striker so we can scam them with ours.
  • Yes. 2 league goals in 18 games says it all.
  • 50% of league games drawn this season.
  • Without investment in a forward, it's much expected.

We've collected the full set! 5-5 too much to hope for. I know we drew 6-6 once too

Did we win the tie break?

Although I agree that we need a change up front, I thought he had one of his better games yesterday and actually got some joy in the air against their centre halves. I would have left him on with Aneke personally.

First 20 mins I thought Oshilaja was an attacking midfielder for them ….
he got boooo’d a little and the inevitable goal arrived for him

    booooing improves players !
I watched their fa cup game recently and he was playing as a second striker at points, think he bagged a goal then also.

    I disagree.

His 'better game' is still relative that at no point this season has he performed at the level we require up front. Even his assist it looks like he got lucky to get it through to Kirk.

I'm not convinced he actually touched the ball, he may have, but not convincingly, it's a shame that he can't seem to fit into the game more, on at least one occasion yesterday he completely missed a golden chance to latch onto a through ball purely because of his lack of ability to move at anything above 2nd gear...sure he's a nice guy but a hinderance at times..

1 goal from open play this season - regardless of his role in the team that’s not enough
Could maybe excuse it if he offered something else around the pitch, but he doesn't. Just waves his arms around moaning at everyone else until he's inevitably subbed for Chuks.
And this is supposed to be our Captain!!
  • His contract expires at the end of next season as well.  Perhaps someone would take a punt on him in the summer, or we loan him out to a league 2 team like we have done with Gilbey.  It’s probably his level as it is Gilbey’s.  If Jackson is still in the Wimbledon job, he might want him
  • No one will come in for him.
  • Someone will take a gamble on him in January. His record last season should hopefully persuade another team that there's a player in there.

Problem is I'm sure his wages are very high and he'd only end up in a hoofball lower midtable League one club.
  • Our inability to win enough games will leave us in mid table at the end of the season. The team spirit and desire is there and being well managed by Garner given the resources a available to him, but the quality isn't, nor the depth to cope with loads of injuries (yet again!)

I suspect we'll be too far off it come January to mount a challenge for the promotion places. I'll be astonished if this team can go on a sustained run of winning games, which is what will be required to get us back in the mix by then.

Although we're harder to beat than last season, I've seen nothing so far to convince me that we're better than average at this level and a top six finish is highly unlikely.

Maybe I'm just feeling somewhat negative this morning but I can't honestly see anyone coming in for JS in January.

In addition, why would he agree a loan move when he inevitably feels he still has a point to make at Charlton ?

Because he's aware of the football we want to play and even he would know that he doesn't fit in.

Just watching him try to adapt to this new football style is painful to watch from the outside, let alone him knowing he's playing poor every week.
  • It’s interesting that Chuks only became a bench player as soon as he first joined Charlton, throughout his whole career he started more games than he was benched - which would beg the question why at the age of 29 is his body no longer up for playing 90 minutes?

A masterclass in defensive ineptitude, with the exception of Sessegnon and MacGillivray, and I thought we were fortunate to come away with a point. Burton outplayed us for most of the game, although we still managed to score three good goals, including two very neat lobs -  something I can’t remember happening twice before in a game.

Clare will be back next week and I do wonder whether it’s time to give Deji Elewere a go in central defence. Inniss and Lavelle were both very poor and we are missing O’Connell in a big way.

Burton seemed to outnumber us in midfield and really should have put the game to bed after they went 3-2 ahead. Our substitutes had their customary impact - with CBT repeatedly roasting their left back - but the last 10 minutes were end to end and either side could have won it. We were incredibly open throughout and fortunate to come away with something from the game. In fairness, Burton played very well and looked anything but a bottom of the table side.

Frustrating in many respects but a good day out and we enjoyed the Burton pubs - the Devonshire Arms and the Coopers Tavern before the game and the Burton Bridge Inn and The Last Heretic post-match. Leaning on a terrace bar behind the goal also made a pleasant change.

It’s fair comment from Garner to say that we’re down to the bare bones with 7 or 8 players out but the reality is that the team and the squad are well short of what’s required to mount a serious challenge.
With a lightweight 4 man midfield of Campbell, Fraser, Dobson and JRS there is a good chance of being outnumbered and outplayed in midfield. It might have been better to have started Payne instead of Campbell. Having two lightweight wingers leaves the mid 2 really exposed.
  • Was a great game for the neutral. Not just for the amount of goals, but it felt like every attack could have led to something (especially in the 2nd half).

Its quite surreal how reliant we are on two players that are on the bench every week (Aneke and CBT). So much more attacking threat with them.

Defensively we are extremely suspect - and will ultimately be the reason we’ll struggle to get out of this division unless it gets sorted sharpish.

Burton is a strange ground. Reminded me a bit of Dartford FC.
  • Can't really be arsed anymore.

I know I am alone with my views re Aneke & I accept that. What I don't accept is that CBT can't start a game.  He used to & he only missed a couple of games through injury. If he is now fully fit he should be back to where he was at the start of the season.....starting games, not coming on for 15/20 mins. And dont say he's more effective coming off the bench as teams are tiring then.......because I dont remember Giggs, Kanchelsis, Ronaldo in their prime not starting games due to this. Its bollox.Start with your best players.

Today was unfortunate due to us missing 3 of our usual back 5. Even our GK gets injured in the warm up !

It's all been said before. We shouldn't have started the season with no left back. We shouldn't be playing Chin there. We should have effective back up to Stockley THAT CAN START.

But I didnt expect much at the start of the season & nothings changed. We are still is a slightly false position & if we dont beat Port Vale next week we will be mid table & amongst the also rans like Fleetwood & Cambridge.

Chin was at right-back yesterday, although I agree that the lack of a left-back is crazy.

I think people arguing for Stockley to leave in January are probably unrealistic, on financial grounds alone. No Championship club will want him and no League One or League Two club will pay his wages. It’s not worth losing him as an option.

Either money needs to be spent on an alternative or we will spend the whole season paying for the release of Washington, which I believe was personally driven by the Sandgaards. Whether you think Washington was good enough is kind of academic - he would add to this squad. We didn’t replace him.

The game yesterday followed the same pattern as Morecambe last season - even Kirk’s second goal was similar to the one scored by Washington, chipping their keeper after receiving the ball from our keeper (possibly via Stockley’s head). It’s pitiful really that we are struggling to get a point against a club of Burton’s resources.

I actually enjoyed the game and the trip but we’re just treading water at best.
We can but hope that someone will throw us a life jacket ASAP....

We’re a top six side, but unfortunately only when the subs come on with fifteen or twenty to go. A ninety minute Aneke would make a huge difference.
As for yesterday, well once again it showed how uncomfortable we are under a high press. It’s noticeable that when the centre backs have the ball they’re not pressed, and yet they often pass to someone who is being pressed, rather than moving forward with the ball. It was great to see Inniss finally trying it when the space opened up, and it directly lead to our first goal. If only they had the confidence to do that more often it would make pressing us more difficult.
Defensively we’re very vulnerable without O’Connell and Egbo, our two best defenders. It doesn’t help having Thomas out as well. We’ll just have to hope we can gather enough points before they return (although we may not see Egbo back until next season, sadly.)
We were also vulnerable to long throws and corners. We’re not the tallest of sides. And again, do we really have no one who can give some back, with long throw ins of our own? We’re so damned predictable. Play out from the back at all costs. Short throws. Come on Garner, mix it up a bit!
Will Sandgaard splash out on defenders in January? Well I doubt it, but we might pick up a loan or a free. A left back is probably most likely, as we have Elerewe and Ness as CB cover.

I do worry for Stockley, and would be happy to see him replaced in January, or at least made back up to a new signing.
