Essex 2s are now 341-4 with Robin Das on 200*. Tejpal Birdi, a 19 year old who plays for Blackheath and who was at the DLCA last winter, has come in for the injured Qadri and took the 4th wicket. F E Testa has yet to bowl a ball so far today.
Simon Cook has been appointed as replacement for Paul Downton as Director of Cricket. Whether it is the right decision to promote from within, as opposed to someone from outside looking in, only time will tell. Wish Simon every success.
Very left field appointment,
Wow really surprised at this. Good luck to the guy but I would have thought they would want a new brush etc. perhaps it’s a money thing
The Director of Cricket is much more of a desk job than being a coach, so we'll see how effective Cook is, in terms of recruitment, contract management etc
Would imagine his first descion would be retain or release the rest of the coaches. Could be some Interesting conversations !

Although those decisions might already have been made or will be made by Downton and the Board especially as Cook is still part of the coaching set up. It's seems obvious, for example, that at least two players are being released at the end of the season even though that has not been announced yet and it could be that Matt Walker (or others) are going too. Equally, they might be waiting to see if we are relegated in the CC or have already decided to just keep everyone and promote Hogan to bowling coach.
Essex 2s close the day on 596-8. That's a lead of 347. With scores like that, our 2s could be our 1s. There again, we do have nine contracted players playing!
In an interview today, Simon Cook was asked whether we can see any big changes to which he replied "not in the short but probably in the long term". In the short term he says that he doesn't want to come in and make any rash decisions and it's going to be about him gathering all sorts of information from all departments, understanding what Kent needs to retain, what they need to modify and what they need to change. That would suggest that it will be up to him to make decisions about the coaching staff but that it isn't one that he is going to make in a hurry.
Essex 1s are 206-3 and 331 runs ahead of Middlesex
Kent 2s are 129-5 and are currently 218 runs behind from making Essex bat again. O'Riordan (26), Ekansh Singh (2), Muyeye (60), Billings (8), Finch (0) are the ones out with Leaning 19* and Khan 4*
I know it's only a second 11 match, but that scorecard is humiliating.
Leaning and Muyeye are probably the only two to come out with any real credit. Add those two (plus Billings or Finch to keep) to the eight or nine netting at Canterbury and that probably is the make up of our team to play Notts starting on Sunday. With Qadri almost certain to be out, the balance of the side isn't likely to be great and any spin will have to be split between Joe Denly (if selected) and Leaning.
Kent 2s were 173 all out and lost by an innings and 174 runs. Aron Nijjar, a left arm spinner who plays for Minster CC in the Kent Prem, finished with figures of 14.5-2-30-6. He is more a white ball bowler but perhaps we could take him on loan if we believe that St Lawrence is going to take spin?
Set 445 to win, Middlesex are 37-2 with Harmer taking both wickets. If Josh de Caires can take 10 wickets on that surface then I'm sure Harmer can be even more unplayable going into the final day.
After beating Northants this week, Lancashire play Middlesex next week then Kent in the final game of the season. The relegation places will be heavily affected by their 3 performances!

Imagine if Parkinson hadn't been sent out on loan but he then played against us for Lancs and helped to send us down.
