Nightwatchman Quinn cleaned up by Woakes

    38-2

To be fair the ball that bowled Quinn would have got a lot of top batsmen out

DBD out, caught in the slips, trying to work a ball to leg and getting a leading edge.

In terms of technique, this arose from DBD taking an off stump guard presumably because he wants to know exactly where his off stump is. That means he cannot on drive the ball because his front leg is blocking him off. He would have hit that through mid wicket had the ball not straightened but against this bowling, in these conditions, he really should be looking to play down the ground which he will struggle to do with that guard to that ball.

    41-3

Denly's misery goes on. Out for a duck and 19 runs now in his 5 innings this season. Chest on to a ball as a result of his back leg coming through to a ball that moves away from him and is caught in the 4th slip/gully area

    44-4

Good toss to win and elect to bowl.

How can they get 453-4 and we get skittled for 158?

27-1 in the second knock too. All over by lunch probably.

As bad if not worse than 6-0 at Ipswich.
    Three reasons for this:

    (1) Our bowling attack isn't comparable to theirs
    (2) Conditions on the first day were probably marginally more seamer friendly than on the third day
    (3) A number of our batsmen played irresponsible shots or ones that demonstrated a lack in technique
    less?

Warks have a seriously good attack. Two internationals in Woakes and Hasan Ali, plus Rushworth now who was really unlucky not to be capped.

Yes I meant "less". Hopefully we will have Agar (who has arrived I am told) and Gilchrist in the next match which should make a difference. It won't improve the batting until we play straight as much as possible but this habit of taking an off stump guard (which some players are now doing) can cause as many issues as it's intended to resolve. Pope changed to doing so but it got him in trouble and once he reverted back he started scoring runs again.

Compton has now faced 107 balls in the match. That is the most, by a country mile, for us and third highest in the game after centurions Yates and Hain. There is a reason for that. The simplicity of his game and the ability to recognise what represents a ball to leave, to defend or to score off.

Cox very lucky not to be run out going for a second run. The throw only needed to be into the keeper's gloves over the stumps and he would have been gone. Why did he feel that we needed that extra run?

And yet we have given him a new deal? Please something make it make sense

To be fair to him, he did got through a run of a couple of years without too many runs but last season actually averaged 40.72. He's going through one of those periods where he's getting some good balls and making some poor decisions - a cocktail, when combined, only has one result. He does look the vulnerable one to be left out though if and when Linde comes back into the side.

That we can have an overseas player, who's basically a squad player, is a massive failure of recruitment

We certainly owe a huge vote of thanks to Joey & Ben for their runs which will make this inevitable defeat look somewhat "better".

If Hogan is required to bat a few overs, will he cover up properly and so endanger his proud never-lbw record?

Judging by the way he was shaking hands with square leg in the first innings I'm really not surprised that he has never been out LBW!

If Kent escape with a draw here it will be most unfair on Warks. They have been by far the better & more dominant team.

They had one innings & declared with half the team not having a bat & with a run rate of almost 4.5 runs an over.

On the other hand Kent have had 2 innings & nearly used all 22 batsmen......with an overall run rate of just over 3 per over.

There really should be more than just win or draw in cricket (inc ties of course).
