Be honest, who had money on "Smith and Labouchagne will both be averaging less than every England player after one Test"?

I'd still have Australia marginal favourites, the way Khawaja is playing, and with Head, Green and Carey to come.

Spinner for the next Test, anyone?
Mate Stokes could pick Mr Blobby to keep wicket and my cat to bowl off spin and he would find away.

Remember under Stokes we have never not taken 20 wickets.

At end of play (England have drifted but the draw has seen some action):

    England 2.12
    Australia 2.38
    Draw 9.20

Me, I put it in a double with Anderson having the highest strike rate in the 3rd innings

Our seamers will steam in first thing tomorrow, but at some point they'll get tired and the ball soft. Can we control things with an injured Moeen and Root as the spinners?

Especially as we didnt bowl the allotted 98 overs.

If it had rained today presumably we could have played until 7.30pm. So, logically, as it rained yesterday & we lost a number of overs (of which we are only making up 8 today & 8 tomorrow) then we should play until 7.30 tonight. But silly me, fancy wanting to play in bright sunshine when we had to bat in gloom & rain yesterday.

    Cricket eh ?

  • Still very much in the balance.  Great Test Match

    What happened to Moeen?

His spinning finger has open blisters. He isn't allowed to tape it so the pronounced seam just digs into it. That comes from not having played red ball for two years. You don't get blisters bowling a maximum four overs with a white ball.

In other words, nowhere near match fit

They might go for a four pronged seam attack if Moeen isn't fit. Stokes has bowled just 7 overs in the match and that really does not suggest that he can fulfil that 4th strike bowling position so they might have to rely on Root for spin. The fact that only 2 of the top 46 wicket takers in the country are spinners (and neither of those are available to play for us) doesn't leave us with too many options. I would love to see Reehan Ahmed play but we are unlikely to do that with just three seamers so that would leave Dawson as the obvious choice.

I believe it was ridiculous starting with 3 players who weren't virtually 100% match fit/up to speed.
    Bairstow, Stokes and Moeen.
As ridiculous as that early declaration when Root was hitting 6's for fun.
Add another 50 to our lead and I'd be very confident.
As it stands it's in the balance and it never should have been.

Yes they were worried about preserving players energy for a tough series, but some players were definitely rusty. Jimmy's bowling wasn't at his best, while Stokes batting wasn't that fluent either. Jonny's keeping was very poor while Mooen's spinning finger wasn't up to the job...

England's bowlers are having to work really hard in this, indeed Bazball means that the Aussie bowlers will have bowled fewer overs than England's, which could tell at Lord's.

If Stokes isnt fully fit then he should drop out & Foakes replaces him to keep wicket & Bairstow plays just as a batsman. Stoke wont be missed as a bowler as he's hardly sent down any deliveries this Test. Bowlers being Anderson, Broad, Robinson and a.n other. Root can be the spinner.
