  • England have picked their squad for the 1st 2 Tests already, so unless there's an injury, Jonny will be keeping whatever. With Lord's likely to be hot and flat, England will have a real conundrum with their bowling attack, as will Moeen's finger be ok by then?

no cricket til after lunch at the earliest, which will be taken at 12:30
It boils my piss this.  If they can play at 12:45 they won't because they have to take lunch?

Unlikely today but its happened in the past when they could be playing and don't.
pretty sure they're taking lunch early specifically so they can fit more overs in and that the pitch won't be ready before 1pm
But why restrict yourself by "taking lunch" at all?  As soon as its playable get out there?
it's not playable because of the drainage of the pitch, once that's done and with no more rain they can play. You have to take lunch, i mean, when are they going to eat?

While it's raining?  Like I originally said it's not an issue here because the pitch isn't playable, but there have been occasions when they have taken lunch when they could have been playing.

If you had some one round to do some work outside but it was raining and they were sat round drinking tea and doing crosswords and as soon as it stopped raining they buggered off for lunch, that would be OK? Especially there was a chance it would rain again later.

Probably not the worst thing….. losing chunks of the day makes it harder and puts much more pressure on a run chase. And the muggy damp overcast conditions make it easier to take wickets….. the weather is better for us than them that’s for sure.

    Great shout.
If only 4 Hours  are possible today then only a draw or England win unless the Aussies join the new philosophy  🤔
Before this match started I fancied the Aussies to win a very close match because as brilliant as Baz ball is to watch I felt because a draw is a total anathema to the present mindset England might push their luck with a declaration or Joe Root might believe he's Kevin Pietersen and rush down the wicket and get stumped when in great form 🧐

We will/have won matches with this approach and a few defeats will obviously happen but drama and entertainment is the priority so Baz and Ben are the dream team even if the odd nightmare will occur 😱

  • Inspection at 1.20pm

There is a duty of care to the players and one career ending step by a player running to stop a boundary will lead to that and litigation. Some areas might be more liable to saturation than others - imagine Stokes going over on that dodgy knee of his on false ground. Just because it isn't raining, unless you are the one out there examining the ground then it is difficult to say what is playable and what isn't. The Umpires will be doing that in conjunction with the Head Groundsman. They are the experts.
  • Lights on at the start of play looks like a real thing as well, so going to be swinging

Jimmy must join the party now with these conditions.
  • 14.15 start apparently
  • England 1.99
    Australia 2.36
    Draw 12.50

Btw, huge call this from me and I'll possibly have to eat my words but I think Anderson might, at last, be done. He's likely retiring at the end of the series imo, but it could be earlier

  • ^this is what's known as a 'ploy'
  • Sun shining now, but humid as well. Plus a damp outfield which won't help England swing the ball if it gets damp...
  • A minimum of 67 overs to be bowled, with tea to be taken at 4:30pm

What you're suggesting is just not cricket, old boy!
    ;-)

(But you're right, it always used to grate on me too!)

    Both teams 20/21 on bet365
  • Boland is becoming a bit of a pain in the back side
I'm not usually a pessimist, but I'm not hopeful about this game. Boland hanging around is bad news. It soon becomes a small target.
  • Boland showing what a useful job a nightwatchman can do, if they are prepared to bat time, rather than get out slogging.
  • We are straying a bit too much onto leg stump to both these batsmen
  • I'm sorry to have to labour the point but those four leg byes were an illustration of how Bairstow is falling over rather than moving his feet quickly and then diving

  • Yes. Boland gone.
  • Now coming in is the man who could take the game away from us in the space of an hour's batting. The time to get him is early.

No slips. Can't think where Broad is intending to bowl to Head.

    Bowling to Head's head...
  • Head is strange. The year he played for Sussex, he couldn't make any decent scores - 50 runs in his first 7 innings as far as I recall, yet he has always scored big in Oz. Let's hope he finds his Sussex form today.
  • As this is the plan, it's times like this when we could do with Wood steaming in at 90mph rather than Broad at 80mph

That spell with Sussex was absolutely atrocious in all formats. Think he got one 50 all season.

He even played in the 2nd XI final against Kent

I thought it sounded as if it would be Broad or Wood for the starting 11 and Broad has been the pick of the England bowler's.
  • On what we've seen so far in this test, Anderson would be the one to make way for Wood for Lord's
