  • Great result and by all accounts a very positive performance involving the players who have either shown themselves to be (or who should be) our most effective offensively - Leaburn, Rak-Sakyi, CBT and Fraser. I hope we settle on a formation and approach now. We can't change formation and half the team every game. It does not change the drastic surgery required on this squad in the next month but God we needed that win.

Almost forgot what it feels like to win! And I love beating the Cowleys so it's double sweet. They'll be out the job soon no doubt. (Pompey fans aren't enjoying their post-match comments, I can tell you).

It's easy to get carried away but these players are capable of a good performance. Just look at Innis. He gives away goals and he's rubbish. Plays a Stormer against Utd and he's good. Should be sent off against Oxford and he's rubbish again. Plays well today and he's good again. The problem is that these players are all like him, they can be good for 45 mins or one game but then utter crap the next.

Can Holden make them perform consistently where 3-4 other managers have failed? I'm not holding my breath but I'm hoping this January will see enough new blood come in that we don't have to rely on what we've got.

Still thoroughly enjoyed today and some top class goals from Fraser and JRS. Probably could've scored a lot more and Pompey didn't really threaten. CBT was so wasteful, though, with two clear-cut opportunities down the drain. He has to do better.

    Onwards and ... Onwards.

Interesting Stockley seemed to be in a slight delay mode to celebrate the OG (Dobbo's strike) with him and the fans.
I also saw him clapping and getting vocal when we did some good defensive work near the touchline when he was warming up.

So I think if we’re going down the thinking about it to much route, I reckon he was just frustrated that the ball didn’t fall to him to get a goal.

I think he’s looked kinda alright in his cameos in recent games, but he is third choice striker (if Aneke is fit) - and will be fourth choice if we get someone decent in this window.
You was doing so well till the Anke fit comment

If they can repeat that and win the next 5 or 6 they’ll get my respect.  We turned them over back in October and nothing happened.  They’ve been that poor that until they show any sort of consistency, it doesn’t matter.  That was our first win in 8

    Somewhat indifferent about the result.

Happy we won. However, considering recent form, yesterday I booked a ten day holiday the same time as the play off semis and final.😳

  • Definitely looked more like a team that can stay in this division. Depressing positives
  • I still can’t wrap my head around how that Fraser free kick didn’t rebound off the keeper into the goal.
Well the answer is simple really... It was taken by a Charlton player - Had it been a Pompey effort @ 1-1, we all know it would have crossed the line
  • Listened to the Charlton commentary.
Last few game's  I've been concerned if Ness can cope with league 1 defending.
I was wrong, from the commentary and 'players marks' I see he had a very good game.
Well done son, and you've earned the right to play next game.
  • I thought pompey were poor and we were just a bit better. Some of the passing was laughable considering all the players are professionals.
That said Id take a 3-1 away win anywhere anytime, especially considering how bad we have been playing lately.
Unbeaten in 2023, quite a few teams cannot say that, long may it last.

After a bit of doubt, I've decided I do quite like how Holden looks like he's setting us up. He plays a high-pressing game which can modify to counter-attack under pressure. It isn't the all-high all-the-time Garner wanted, but it has that as the default setting. And Pompey couldn't handle that press
Looks like Holden is working out how to play the hand he has been given rather quicker than his predecessors, rather than coming in with fixed ideas as to how to play. Still need to concentrate on doing the basics better in defence if the marking for their goal is anything to go by.

I'm usually not bothered by player marks but i'm befuddled by so many people rating CBT higher than JRS. CBT wasted two really glorious chances to kill the game and JRS scored an absolute beaut and did little else wrong.

They remind me of shifty estate agents who you wouldn't rent a bedsit in Croydon from.

Putting two entirely unrelated points into a post is risky cos you gotta nail both to get that like. You do so. Well played my man

The main thing I need to know is whether @oohaahmortimer son and his space cadet pals made it there and back unscathed and buzzing
  • I can't complain having watched Dartford stuff Ebbsfleet today, but it's typical that I go to Oxford and see a dismal defeat, and not today to Pompey to see the complete opposite  :)

IF 352 or variants has been dumped again, and 433 is the favoured formation, then that changes the nature of the squad we need. That surplus of attacking midfielders on the bench midweek, now looks essential - we can't rely on CBT and JRS playing every week.

Indeed a decent LB would be the first signing I'd make, as Sessegnon can play on the right, and can play further up the pitch.

The thing with JRS in the player marks is a lot of people seem to mention he went quiet second half. I don't think he did, but he was possibly less attacking than normal as he was absolutely working his arse off doing defensive cover in front of Clare. Remember that move where the Pompey keeper came charging out and CBT pushed the ball ahead of him a bit too hard so it went out for a goal kick? That started with JRS winning the ball near the touchline midway in our own half and feeding it across to Stockley for that defence-splitting pass. It's possible he was under instruction to sit deeper after we scored our second, to help make sure we didn't get sucker punched on the break. Admittedly I've only seen the legally streamable games, but I think that was probably his best all round game for a while, and possibly all season.
  • I had to leave the room and stop watching the stream around the 89th minute as I didn’t think my nerves would take watching 5-6 minutes of added time. Managed to get back in time to see the replay of the third goal when I heard the combined yells from Tel’s commentary and my wife who was still watching.
  • I still can’t wrap my head around how that Fraser free kick didn’t rebound off the keeper into the goal.
100% it would've gone in if it was against us.

Fine margins and the way our luck has been lately - it wasn’t dissimilar to the ball squirming under AMB vs. Oxford but that one fell out of AMB’s reach and ended with a tap-in for Oxford killing our fight back. Thankfully, today, that bit of luck for Pompey’s keeper wasn’t decisive.

Mrs dropped em off at Buckhurst Hill tube station for a 9.15 meet and the Snapchat as they approached was one of the divs had a new charger for his  phone that was low on battery but was on his way there without a fucking lead and did anyone have one but in all fairness he was the one bringing the lukewarm San Miguel bottles so I’ll let him off for the train part of the journey ,
between the other 3 no one could provide the lead so they took one from the mrs car
The other charlton fan amongst the honorary Essex Addicks I’ve been subconsciously grooming since he was 6 (his mum was brought up near Charlton and is a fan ) he’s had a wobble throughout the years with a Liverpool thing but he’s hooked and has been the lead organiser sorting things out with the train routes and getting the other 3 cadets , United , Arsenal and a hammer along for the trip . My 16 year old wouldn’t know his arse from his head when it comes to sorting this shit out .
They got there and back all fine with a Subway for lunch .
It’s the only time I get more than a grunt from him nowadays when I picked him up from the tube station and we went through the game .
My 4 , nephew, groomed addick , man United fan (who goes to the odd charlton game) and gooner are all aboard the (non) fun bus bunking off school next week when I’m driving them to old Trafford , I’m more excited for them than me cos I’ll be there tempering their enthusiasm and removing any bit of spirit they have in them with my now perfected grim reaper role .

  • Hit the(cadburys)  chocolate hard so a late night bog visit in order for a change , will be abstaining once the kids go back to school .
As with covered end I had tears and was emotional at the end because the magnitude of that win (hopefully) can arrest this nightmare slide towards where Addicks fans have never trod before in our 100 year league history .
All really been said apart from the defensive contributions (although think one went awry) from our most threatening attacking player (to me anyway)Rak Sakhi  in the last 15 mins . Yes he’s a raw talent and his touch can let him down on occasion but he’s silk when he gets moving like the footballing god Mortimer in full flow , he will be the teams biggest loss if he goes this January .
For a kid that young and never really shown that side of his game before to still be getting a foot in that late on FairPlay to him whether he stays or goes , space cadets can come good .
  • Only the top 3 have lost less games than Pompey (5) all  season with 2 of them against us !!!
they do have 3 games in hand on some .
we have scored 2/9ths of the goals they have conceded this season !!
