Why so angry? It's an end of season game and we're stuck in midtable. We were always going to get well beaten today in all likelihood. I didn't watch it (I've watched all our other games recently) because I knew something like this would happen (and because my girlfriend wanted a day out). The time to get angry is if this keeps happening, when it matters. I'm much angrier about our struggles earlier in the season against weaker teams than a cricket-season shellacking by a team who'll probably be aiming at the Premiership next season
Because I spent a whole day and a couple of hundred quid to watch us get done 6 nil in division three, with the sort of performance that was beyond embarrassment. I can almost accept lack of quality, because you get what you pay for, but I won't accept a lack of effort, commitment and passion, and yesterday was pitiful.

I stayed to the end to let them know how I felt - amazed to see plenty clapping the team off.
I would love to know why someone would - un-ironically - clap the players off yesterday?

I asked a fellow supporter that as he was clapping the players off at the end. He told me to fuck off, but did come back later and apologise. Funny thing
was that he was in his 70s..

Get rid, limited player who can never seem to stop the cross.

I think asking if we should re-sign X is often too convenient of a question because the answer is yeah sure, why not, he's already here and he's alright, etc..

Really the question should be: if this player didn't play for Charlton and was a free agent, would we be happy signing him?
It all boils down to ownership/investment, plus an acceptance of the fact we are currently a bang-average, middle of the table L1 side.

Sure, if money comes in, we can be looking at better players, but even then, agents start licking their lips at the dollar signs and we probably can't recruit in every squad place in one summer window. Realistically, a fair amount of that current, average squad will stay, unless any new owners have money to burn. You can think like this is Football Manager and we could have the full clear out, but that (as sad as it is to accept) probably not going to be a reality.

We won't appeal to those kind of better players unless we have the money to show we can realistically challenge for promotion. It's all linked together, so everything has to come with a huge dose of remembering where we are.

Last time I answered this question I came up with:

    Keep:
Egbo, Dobbo, Ness, Hector, Leaburn (+AMB)

    Let Go:
    Kirk, Bonne, Lavelle, Chuks, Penny

Still think Egbo is a decent player, despite yesterday.
Hector I think is quite classy, but he did have a mare yesterday.
Could certainly add Kilkenny, Kane and a few others to the let go list.

This evening I'm almost beyond caring. I doubt I'd be upset if they let any of them go other than Leaburn and Ness. Perhaps Dobson. Sad times.

Probably time to have a break from football after a rubbish weekend of sport. Lutsenko narrowly missing out getting a place at the Amstel Gold race was the final straw. Backed e/w at 70/1
    :-(

A lot of people losing their rag with each other on here doesn't help any of us either.
  • Keep AMB, Ness, Dobson,, leaburn. Frazer. CBT . Egbo, Campbell. Maybe Hector and Thomas on one year deals . Chuks will still be here and probably finish second top scorer with his dozen games so that’s 11 at a push . All the rest can go and replacements found.
  • I would get rid of players like Morgan and clare. I want them to succeed but they blow hot and cold and don't know their best position either.
Sess the only loan player to keep but even he is expensive for the amount of game time he gives.

Keep - cbt dobson, Fraser, wollacott, Hector and all the youngsters.

Innis, aneke and Todd kane might struggle to find another club. Especially aneke who I remain convinced does too much weight training so causes himself alot of injuries.
  • It's an interesting one, though my guess is the answers would be different this week to what they would after the 6-0 win over Shrewsbury.

A week ago, Hector and Innis may have been on the retain list. Now they suddenly appear on the get rid lists.

Innis is a difficult one as he is a divisive player. There's no doubting his commitment but that's partly what gives him such an awful disciplinary record. Despite a nightmare on Saturday, that I haven't seen, Hector generally seems to be a level above our other central defenders.

There are several players that I'd possibly keep but mainly to strengthen the bench (e.g. Inniss, Clare, Thomas) alongside the those that most others have touted, but we really need a few in to strengthen that starting lineup.

Take Albie Morgan for example. Let's pretend he doesn't play for Charlton and is a free agent.

Now Albie is announced as our first signing of the summer.

What's the reaction? Let's be honest, that is an awful signing. So why renew him.

Should we sign Innis, with his track record... Whatever for?

    The list goes on.
In your scenario if we signed Morgan I’d have to google him to find out who he is. I doubt there are many, if any, fans in League One who if they signed him would say ‘oooh, he stood out against us, good signing’ so yes you are right why would we then want to re-sign him.

Inniss and Kane struggling to find another club isn’t really of our concern but if they were at least that means we have released them.

Out of interest, who did Powell keep hold of prior to splashing out on his new recruits?
Jackson was the main one and youngsters like Solly, Waggy and Harriott.

He brought in Hamer, Wiggins, Morrison, Taylor, Cort, Hollands, Stephens, Hayes and BWP initially if I remember rightly. Yann arrived a bit later in the season.
I think Powell did a fantastic job and a player like Cort summed it up. Not first choice but when called upon the team wasn't noticeably weakened very much. However, I do not think the job is as hard as it was for Powell. I think we are dismissing the need for a squad and some of the players people would want to see go would be ok as squad players. I think Clare and Thomas are versatile and whilst I wouldn't wan't either as our main starting eleven player, they can IMO do a job.
  • Most are saying keep CBT but isn't he injury prone and blows hot and cold?
  • We’ve already extended the contracts of CBT & AMB so no point debating them….they will be here next season.

    Same with Ness I think.

If most want to keep a player like that, then most are presumably happy for Charlton to continue to languish in the third division, being nowhere near the playoffs, and trying to scrape enough points to avoid relegation.

Which will of course repeat ad infinitum unless we ever get proper ownership.

CBT has improved (look at his output this season compared to last). We need goals from those wide players and we are losing JRS so would be stupid to lose CBT as well. Ideally we will sign a couple of better wingers so that he’s more of an impact player from the bench and that might then help with the injuries

Morgan has 3 goals and 7 assists in league 1 this season so far and is only 23. I’m not saying we should keep him but in that scenario i think most people would be very happy with the signing

  • Get rid of
innis , Clare, Morgan, Penney, Bonne, harness

    try and flog
Kirk, lavelle, DJ, McGrandles , aneke (mutual agreement to terminate?)

    keep
hector, leaburn, Dobson, AMB, egbo , Fraser, sess (if possible), ness & Mitchell , CBT

    Keep, if last option
    thomas, Campbell (otherwise loan out),

    grim reading really
I think this is absolutely spot on!
  • My question is, do we currently have any players that you think are the basis of building a squad around ? My personal view is that even with decent investment and good management we’re only at the beginning of a three year rebuilding programme where we need to add a couple of top quality players every season and retain those we can. At this low point in our squad I’d say that we have only Leaburn and Ness under contract that are anchor players. Re signing Hector would be a good start and our ability or not to do that is going to be a good indicator of just where we’re heading.

If you could keep AMB, Ness and Hector, Dobson and Leaburn then I'd call that a decent "spine" of a team but it's everything else (including cover for the named) that's the issue...

Ness signed a new Contract in the summer, we've technically got him for two more years
  • Until we get a half decent owner nothing will change. We are L1 at best and will have a mediocre squad next season.
