Perhaps we should try and pinch Paul Mullin from Wrexham , despite all the hoohah , they are still only bloody Wrexham and he is an absolute goal scoring machine and still only 28
I think you need to pinch yourself first mate.  They signed O’Connell from us, they’re “only Wrexham” in terms of history but spending power they could buy our entire team if they wanted.
Absolutely not. If Leaburn is currently worth maybe 4 or 5 million Reynolds won’t  be paying anywhere near that for a player. Let’s see how much their biggest summer signing is.
You’re splitting hairs a bit here, my overall point remains, Wrexham spending power >>> Charltons spending power.
It's not even (just) the "hard" spending power of Wrexham but also the "soft" power of being part of the "Wrexham story" which has sold them as really ambitious but also feel-good, the perception is a club going places and that absolutely will appeal to a lot of players.

Charlton in contrast need to take drastic action if we're going to do anything more than idle around as L1 also-rans.
That feel-good factor has enabled them to sign L1 and L2 players, but I suspect there will be a limit to how far they can go, especially with stricter financial rules in the EFL.

Leaving aside personal issues like location, no player is going to choose Wrexham over a top L1 side, fighting at the top for promotion. Whether we count as that is unknown at the moment.

May scoring 20 goals two seasons in a row is very impressive (though without checking the stats I'm pretty sure three quarters of them were against us, as is tradition) but I just feel like every time CL gets fixated on a player when we eventually sign them they're rubbish. Fraser was apparently the greatest midfielder of all time, and he's ok. He's decent. Ben Reeves was that missing piece in our puzzle for years and when he came in he was an average squad player. Payne was highlighted as a great potential signing and he's another backup player. We prayed for Charlie Kirk, Marcus Maddison, Danny Green and even Reza when Roland first took over. Of all our wishlist players I think only Ricky Holmes has been consistently first team good in the last 15 years. Either we're bad at picking out players or Charlton Life is cursed. Either way we'll probably ruin Alfie May's life.

Agreed but they haven't hit those limits yet and until they do they are going to be a bit of a wild card in terms of L1 & L2 players.

Conversely, at Charlton we need to sign players to show some real ambition of being contenders for promotion... but we aren't appealing to players because we aren't showing signs of being contenders for promotion.

We need a proper statement signing, but for that we need to know who is actually going to own the club.

“We made Alfie a very good offer against competition from Championship clubs but were in the end unable to get a deal across the line”.

Just been sat in front of Steve Gallen on a 161 and he got off at Eltham. I was too shy to say anything but he definitely gave me the vibe that he’s about to sign Alfie May.
Is that because May was sitting next to him?

The way things stand, Wrexham is a more attractive destination for a footballer atm, unfort

Unfortunately I've just seen Unai Emery on a 486 holding a cheque book, so the rumours of Villa signing Leaburn must be true.

I think that depends on the footballer.  Players towards end of their career wanting a payday, some positive vibes and to have fun winning a league etc will go to Wrexham more likely than us (Alfie May might fall into that category at 29).

Young players wanting to push up the leagues and play at the highest level possible in the hope they then jump up again and PL loanees would certainly fall into that category would prefer us.

I imagine they want some new contract announcements to include in the statement, rather than just having to say

"We have offered deals to A, B and C and they are considering them"

    don't rate either of A,B or C...

  • Would love to see us try and get Anthony Scully from Wigan after they've messed up the wages again. Can see a few of their players wanting to leave the sinking ship.

Leaburn and May in a 352 would be tasty.  But we won’t play 352, won’t sign May and might even lose Leaburn to fund the loses.  Can’t rule it out at this stage though.

I’m warming to the idea of Sam Smith - his last two seasons at Cambridge have parallels to Lyle Taylor’s two League One seasons as AFCW.

Also both available on free transfers at the end of those second seasons…

Also also he’s a Manchester boy so might get along well with Holden.

    Taylor:
    16/17 - played 43, scored 10
    17/18 - played 46, scored 14

    Smith:
    21/22 - played 46, scored 15
    22/23 - played 45, scored 13

How can any club be described as a front runner for May when no bids have been submitted?

I always thought Eisa would be a good signing but after seeing his performance against Burton I now have my  doubts . Despite BIg Mac doing his usual flaps from crosses he looked well off the boil.
