The ref and the 2 VAR officials won't be working this weekend. Yes the ref was at fault, but it's VAR's job to overturn the howler. No point having it if they get such easy decisions wrong.
  • I've just seen the Wolves "penalty" incident.

    Dear oh dear.

But "it's not VAR that's the problem" remember!

VAR isn’t really the problem, I’m 100% against it and always have been, but until the R part is fixed and we actually have elite level refs that match our elite level league, nothing is going to change.

    Step 1, allow foreign refs.

I broadly agree with this, but I don't think referees should be operating the VAR at all. It's not the same job and requires and overlapping, but different skillset. I want  expert VAR operators, not referees stuck in a box trying not to upset their mates too much so they don't get the same happen to them next week.

We have millions of hours of football footage. It should be straight-forward to train analysts to look at that footage and make the right decisions.
  • Give the job to AI, there must be enough machine learning they can do on footage etc to get it to a point where it can tell you what a foul is and isn't

It's the referees. They don't know the rules and can't do the job.

Every single week there's simple errors owing to the referees themselves clearly not understanding their own job, even with being given all the help in the world.

How is this going to sort the issue... European / ROW Referees look just as crap, if not worse come the Euros and World Cup - The bloke who took charge of England vs France was supposed to be one of the "best" in Brazil for example.

Remember that Aussie bloke who has moved to England when we faced Reading? - He's now a Premier League referee too, or at least he was

The bigger issue for me this season, isnt VAR (Although it showed how controversial it is last night... It'll ALWAYS be controversial) - But the fact that the Premier League has turned down the opportunity to use the automatic Offside system that has worked so well elsewhere up until now, simply because "they're" not happy with the tests
  • on field refs will miss things, might not always be looking directly at the incident or have their view blocked.

absolutely no excuse for VAR not getting it right though

I know, I know but Simon Jordan said on Talksport that in his opinion refs are getting lazy, not fitness wise, but they know they have VAR as a back up so dodge out of making decisions leaving VAR to sort it out. I tend to agree, why make yourself unpopular when someone else can do it for you.

My thoughts exactly. On field refs will always miss things, through being distracted for a split second - there could be 2 players having a bit of a scuffle at the same time which attracts his attention as well - but VAR officials don't have that excuse.

  • Mate tells me it wasn't a penalty....lol, then he is MU.
  • Rather confusing deal for Raya.

    https://www.brentfordfc.com/en/news/article/first-team-david-raya-brentford-arsenal-transfer

Goalkeeper David Raya has joined Arsenal on a season-long loan, with an option for the Gunners to make the transfer permanent.
Before departing, Raya signed a new two-year contract with Brentford, with a club option for an additional 12 months.
"I’m sure the first question that all Brentford fans will ask is why this transfer has been structured as an initial loan with Arsenal having the option to make it permanent in the future,” said Brentford director of football Phil Giles.

“The answer to that is simply that it enables this deal to be done more rapidly between both clubs, with all parties wanting to make this a permanent transfer as soon as practically possible, whenever that might be.

“David’s contract extension is a fall-back position in the event that the transfer is not made permanent. I’m not expecting to see David back at Brentford, although if ever that happened then of course the opportunity to work with such a high-class goalkeeper for up to two more years would in many ways be an unexpected bonus for us.
  • Don't get why that's quicker than just a normal transfer but admittedly I'm a bit slow.
  • So signed him for 2 more years, loan him out but Arsenal can buy him at any time.

So is that a "Arsenal are skint and can't afford his fee right now" deal, and a new way to try and circumvent FFP rules? Or just a fairly normal transaction that has just been worded a bit weirdly

de Bruyne is out for up to four months
  • Recurrence of the hamstring injury he suffered in the Champions League Final.

That's going to be a tough one to get over for a 32 year old, both physically and psychologically.

I know they get the best medical treatment but once your hamstring goes, it's always in the back of your mind when you're playing that it could go at anytime again.

I was never the same once my hamstring went and I'm convinced it was connected to other niggling injuries.

How are you feeling now, Chuks?

The refs being a key part of VAR.

It's FFP. Gives Arsenal a way to move the transfer fee into next year's accounts rather than this year.

I'm good thanks, will be cheering the boys on from the stands tonight with my special guest, Danny Haynes.

Not all foreign refs will be great, of course, but some will be better than what we have, if we want the best league in the world, we need the best refs in the world. It’s a ridiculous restriction
  • The PGMOL have just bid 35m for the top 2 Saudi refs.

Chelsea have topped their bid with a £40m bid.
  • Chelsea look like signing Michael Olise. The big PL sides have been hoovering up players from the mid table ones this window.
  • de Bruyne is out for up to four months
Pretty much confirms Paqueta to City then, they have to get him now.

I know they're the best team in the world right now, but they can't go from now until De Bruyne returns in early 2024 with their attacking options being Haaland, Alvarez, Grealish, Foden, Bernardo and Palmer.

Obviously any team would want them and they are 5 great players and also Palmer (who is not at that level yet though) but 6 players for 4-5 places when they're competing on all fronts isn't enough depth.
  • Pretty good news for England in the run up to the euros. I guess foden wll be playing more

Why do Chelsea keep signing wingers and no proper striker?!
  • Just to stop other teams signing those players.
  • Olise to Chelsea just seems weird , they got rid of Pulisic but still have Madueke, Mudryk , Hudson - Odoi, Ziyech, and Jackson they signed from Villarreal.

Does mean JRS might get a chance at Palace though.

Hudson-Odoi is rumoured to be leaving too

They really should have accepted that Bayern bid years ago.
