I thought he was deeper today which is his natural position.

He’s a box to box midfielder who replaced Docherty. He’s mostly been playing in the Berry position which doesn’t suit him as much.

I’ve not been a fan of his but I was waiting to see him in his natural position. I’m a fan now.

He was definitely deeper than normal yesterday. Seemed to suit him. I’m not going to go quite as over the top as some on this thread but it was definitely a good performance but there will be tougher tests to come than the woeful Exeter side we faced yesterday. Wish he had scored.
  • tremendous yesterday
    better than any Docherty performance
gives NJ a selection issue for Orient
my money is on NJ getting it wrong

Exactly that. He's never an attacking midfielder. Well not yet anyway. His finishing yesterday suggests as much. But that will come.
He played the Docherty role yesterday and was superb.
  • In my opinion it looks as if the Docherty and Ahadme signings were bringing in players that were no better than what we already had in house.
I watch a lot of our football one way or another and I really haven’t seen what difference Docherty makes in games, whereas yesterday the presence of Anderson was impossible to miss.
  • Anderson can become better than Docherty because of his physique - if you just want a player who can get around the pitch, box to box, get his foot in and nick the ball off the opposition then lay it off for others, Anderson is quicker, stronger and better in the air than Docherty. Yesterday's performance was better than anything Docherty would be capable of. However, he has also had some real stinkers and so i think we're a bit off from him replacing Docherty in the team full time for now.

Docherty’s not been as good as I hoped but he’s also played his part in the big improvement since the Crawley game. He’s been solid and consistent for us in that run, which is still positive, even if he’s not the stand out player we would like him to be.

Anderson had a great game yesterday and playing him that bit deeper should only help, but it’s too early to say he’s better than Docherty.

Looking forward to seeing who Jones picks next week.

Where would CL be without your mandatory negativity 🤦🏻‍♂️
So do you think over the last 15 games that NJ has been getting things wrong ? In my opinion he got many things wrong in the 1st 20 odd matches as many others thought as well in not using the width of the pitch especially against the lesser teams when you want to be pro active and play on the front foot.
Anderson had probably his best game in a Charlton shirt but does one good game get him into the side against Orient ?
You say he will get it wrong so do you think Anderson should play against Orient or not ?

We have improved since we have had stability and a game plan emerged from the many turgid games up to November.

Docherty has improved with Coventry as Small, Ramsey, Jones and were fit to play every week.

It will be a big call on the starting 11 but also the business end in the last 25 minutes plus added time against Orient who have been in great form over the last 15 matches bar the defeat to Bolton on Saturday.
  • Massive call to stick Anderson in over Docherty if he's fit.
He's young and had great games for us before. Problem is,he's only ever followed those up with absolute stinkers. Thats no aspertion on him and to be expected at his young age.
Orient is a massive game and if it was me I'd go with Doch.

  • Anderson has been poor all season. One good game against poor opponents and he should now start over the club captain who has improved game by game over the last 15 games?

Anderson is still young and learning and has the potential to be a very good player, but we have only seen limited glimpses of that potential.

My view is that doc comes straight back in next week. We need experience and calm for what will be the biggest game of the season so far. Anderson is also a headless chicken risk!!

Doc is far better than Karoy when running forward, with the ball at his feet.

Very important when transitioning from defence to attack.

Also, Doc is a leader on the pitch, which is important.

If Doc is fit, he starts...
It’s the only sensible answer and, as well as Anderson played yesterday, I think Jones will see it the same way.
  • In terms of the Anderson v Orient dilemma, well the very good Alex Mitchell has been dropped for the very good Kanye Ramsey, and not won his place back.
Docherty has not been dropped as such, but just as the showing of Ramsey has kept Alex Mitchell out, it is possible the showing of Karoy Anderson will keep Greg Docherty out.
Whatever decision Nathan Jones makes will be justified if we win.

Ramsey was very good and consistent before he was injured.

Anderson got dropped because he was not playing well.

    Very very different scenarios.
  • Excellent yesterday. He is is still only very young and will only get better. Personally think I would start Docherty v Orient for his experience and captaincy. But maybe play Karoy v Barnsley. We are likely to lose Coventry for a 2 game game ban soon and ideally keep them both match fit as well.
  • Fair enough.
Do you think it might be possible Anderson got dropped because it was easier to drop the young guy to accommodate more senior signings like Alan Campbell, Luke Berry, Conor Coventry, and Greg Docherty?
I fully admit my bias because I am always inclined to look on our own a bit more favourably than incomers.
  • Best game for us yesterday...deserved a goal, needs to work on his heading!

Proved what I felt earlier in the season, Karoy was miscast as an Attacking Midfielder, he's a box to box physical presence, his passing was a lot better yesterday because he had more time on the ball playing slightly deeper. Could to have him as cover and competition for Doc.

So, just to be sure, you think perhaps it's a good idea to drop Coventry for Anderson?

I'm a massive fan of our Academy, and love it when players like Karoy, TC and Leaburn transition from the Youth ranks to 1st team regulars.

But it's a results business. If we have more chance of winning against Orient with Doc than Karoy, it's a no-brainer for me...

No, for me if I was the football manager, with the limited information we only ever get to see - If pretty much the whole team were playing poorly I’d most likely revert back to picking players who have had success playing at a higher level.

I think if you spoke with Anderson I doubt he would be feeling hard done by his current situation. It’s all part of his development

  • I think Jones will bring back Doc and I don't have an issue with that. It is good to know we have a quality to bring on or bring in as yesterday showed we will need it. Coventry is close to a suspension and you can always get illness and injury.
  • If Doc is well enough to train normally most of the week he starts. But how good would it be to have yesterday’s version of Anderson come off the bench for half an hour. His fresh legs against some tired Orient ones could do some damage

No, I think it was because as good as Karoy has been at pressing and harrying the opposition into making errors, earlier in the season his work in possession was not great, wayward passing and getting dispossessed too easily. Hopefully yesterday is an indication that that's been worked on and he's improved those areas of his game, although I'm not sure how much pressure Exeter really put him under to be able to say for certain at this point.

It really wasn’t working with Anderson earlier in the season and, if anything, I actually felt like Jones persisted too long rather than dropping him out of convenience.

I have not suggested dropping Coventry. Although earlier in the season I would have dropped him for Taylor.
  • The version of Karoy yesterday was better than any version of Doc we’ve seen since he joined. The challenge for Karoy, is to now produce this level consistently, if he does, Doc will have a tough time getting back in the starting line up anyway. Win / Win for CAFC.
Playing in Doc’s deeper role made better use of Karoy’s attributes.
I understand him playing higher from a frontline press perspective but little else. He’s not a creator, he’s a connector when in possession and he did this very well yesterday. It also complimented Coverntry’s ability to conduct.

  • needs a run in the team to really establish himself .. problem is the present trio (y'all know who) is doing a pretty good job
  • I have criticised him a lot this season as he looked like a headless chicken and gave the ball away too much but yesterday he was brilliant. I’m not sure if it was the deeper role or not but fair play he stepped up. Saying that next week is a massive game for us in terms of our season and for that reason Doc comes back in I think. I don’t think we can afford to take the chance of getting a performance from earlier in the season rather than yesterday
  • Definitely his best game for us yesterday. Certainly a contender for motm. Hopefully this will pick his confidence up a bit. He does have a tendency to drift in and out of games but Jones must see something in him to have started him yesterday.
Come on Karoy. You could be such a good player if you can get the consistency.
  • Orient likes to press the opposing side.  That is a recipe for disaster with Karoy.  Exeter sat back and gave him all of the time in the world.  There will be weeks where it makes sense to start Karoy to take advantage of his athleticism but I just don’t think next week is the best idea.
