Anyone remember Bielik in the first half of his loan season? He was forever giving the ball away. Look at him now (bigging it up for Birmingham). Anderson has bags of talent and will only get better and better. We really missed his presence in the second half on Saturday which enabled Wrexham to take over the midfield.
Lots of revisionism here, Bielik was nowhere near as bad as Karoy is for being caught in possession, and was a commanding defensive midfielder/central defender.
If Karoy has bags of talent then we are yet to see him let it all out, he has potential, yes, and will almost certainly improve, but running around a lot isn't what I'd class as a talent (unless you're a marathon runner I guess) his first touch leaves a lot to be desired, his decision making is sketchy at times and his passing is more wayward than most of our squad.
The main thing that helped Wrexham in the second half was not the change in personnel but the change in shape. If, for instance, he stayed on and Coventry or Docherty came off at half time, we would have still got overran in midfield as we swapped to a 352 and had a man less in the middle than the first half.
I agree with those saying Anderson has a lot of potential, but I’m not as certain he’ll get there. Lapslie was a similar player but he’s found himself in L2. If he can be tidier in possession and add the odd goal and assist he’ll be difficult to drop. At the moment he’s playing more because our other midfielders don’t offer the same energy he has, despite his weaknesses.
He might become a good player, he might not. What matters is that he currently isn't good enough in possession to be starting in our midfield every week.

The problem with that is Docherty and Campbell aren’t performing to the level we expected. Berry should probably play for his goals but the rest of his game hasn’t been great either.

If you play Berry in the box midfield you basically need to play Anderson because he can almost press for both of them

It's not revisionism, it's just looking back at what happened. Bielik really wasn't at it at first for us, which is what has been said. He started fairly poorly, was injured for a bit and then came back in and was so bad against Rochdale he was hauled off at half time and very publicly chastised. In fact, Bielik stated in an interview after that that he's far more comfortable as a defender and didn't see himself as a natural defensive midfielder. I don't think the two players are comparable in terms of their styles but I think Bielik is a good example for us of players who can make a lot of mistakes as young players and then improve rapidly with a bit of patience and hard work.
The 'running around a lot isn't a skill' argument completely misses the point of his actual ability, which is that he's very good at getting very tight to players very quickly and very good at judging interceptions high up the pitch. he's then terrible at moving the ball on smartly after that because he rushes rather than doing it quickly, but if he can start RELAXing on the ball a bit more his aggression high up the pitch will be a very useful tool at this level. Plenty of time for him
I noticed on Saturday he calls for the ball but looks as though he really doesn't want it. He gets himself in positions where the defence have to bypass him to move the ball forward. Hiding we used to call it. No argument about his energy. He can press no doubt. But his offensive play is completely non existent. I get he's young and he may well turn out to be a future talent, but it's really not evident on much of the appearances I have seen? He is bereft of any real self confidence when in possession of the ball. That can be managed of course. I was hoping he would really push on this season and we'd see something similar to Aribo but that looks less and less likely as each game passes.

Agree. I can't envisage him playing higher than mid Championship.
Right now, we're a crap team in a crap league. Never better reflected by the players and management.
Many of our fans have rose tinted glasses, especially when it comes to homegrown players.

Remember all those other midfielders we’ve had in recent times who didn’t go on to be as good as Bielik?

Bielik was double the player Anderson was, even in his raw early stages you can see he was a far superior football to Anderson, he has nearly played 50 senior games now, and has not kicked on much at all
To my mind KA is not a nailed on starter. I'd like to see 4 of Coventry, Doherty, Taylor, A Campbell or Berry in a midfield combo for some decent game minutes to see what they can become together. We haven't seen the best of Doherty for sure and I don't think Taylor and A Campbell have had enough match minutes to really get up to speed. Miles needs a few more miles under his belt too. We've got tonight and Saturday to try things out and give these guys some much needed game time....... and who cares if we don't progress in either competition. I'd rather get our L1 house in better order......

Equally many write players off too early and underrate them because they haven’t at that point become consistent. Some would have released Grant, didn’t think Konsa was anything special etc. They don’t need to be Gomez or Lookman to have a positive impact, and some need more than a season or so to develop.
I think either or both of tonight and Saturdays games could be just what Anderson needs. Games against weaker opposition to hopefully give him a bit more confidence on the ball, that he can then take into league games

It's nothing to do with writing players off. I don't have the stats, but 99% of kids who play for Charlton U12s don't play higher than L1 football.
Secondly, it's about wanting players who are good enough to get Charlton out of this poxy league and Karoy Anderson isn't one of those players.
It curious that Coventry is excused passing backwards or sideways because he lacks options. Karoy playing further advanced, with fewer options is criticised for losing the ball when he always trying to move it forward

I agree we need players who start regularly to be better than what we have, but he could be a squad player in a promotion winning squad. The problem is we have too many like that, and not enough who’d be starters.
Like I said there was a point when some didn’t rate players like Grant and Konsa. Similar things would have been said about others such as Pope and Aribo. Fox wasn’t rated but spent a lot more time in the Championship than we as a club have. Some didn’t see how Lapslie could add something to the first team, but that squad went up.
All I’m saying is the truth is somewhere between the rose tinted view that every youngster is a superstar, and those who’d give up on a player after their first year of senior football in which they weren’t the next Shelvey, Gomez or Lookman.
Karoy, along with TC and Kanu, were deemed not good enough before the Birmingham game but all three were a key part of our best result and perfornance this season.

A team that also had Allan Campbell and Greg Docherty.

That's the crux of it for me. Anderson's primary job is to lead the press and hassle and harry the opposition to win us the ball back high up the pitch. He's currently doing that better than anyone else, including someone like Alan Campbell who has been given a very similar job in the box midfield. He hasn't been good enough on the ball, but I'm not sure he's really that much worse than Berry, Campbell, or Docherty have been. In fact, I'd argue he probably seems worse than he is because he is working harder, getting more involved, and seeing more of the ball meaning he has more opportunities to make mistakes.
His misplaced passes and poor touches are hugely frustrating, but taking him out of the midfield doesn't magically fix everything because the players that will come in are arguably just as bad at Anderson's weaknesses and not as good at Anderson's strengths.
That is the most frustrating thing of all - the fact that he is competing with 3 of our biggest summer signings, all of whom are supposedly Championship quality but they are just not performing.
It's yet another transfer window where our recruitment (if we're being kind) has had patchy success, at best. We talk about getting through to January and signing a proper creative midfielder, but does anyone really have any faith left that we will sign s good player to fill that role?
I’m not knocking the lad as he is very young and imo should not be starting games yet. He may go on to have a good career but at the moment his first touch isn’t good enough and he loses the ball too often as he doesn’t get given time to get control after a bad first touch. Effort and a great engine shouldn’t outweigh ability if the manager has options

Was 20 on the first of this month. Tyreece Campbell is one year older. Karoy around 40 games, Tyreece around 70 games. What were people saying about Tyreece 30 games of his ago?

None of that is Anderson's fault.

We also won the last BSM trophy game he played.
So no causation
Otherwise, he wouldn't be picked. End of.
