12 games for Cheltenham last season with no goals, May comes here and he gets 6 in 16. Doesn't look like he gets many assists but maybe he frees up defenders for May. Not convinced by this one but you'd imagine they asked May and he approved
  • Think I’d prefer Jake Young, based on the video clips but reading FGR and Bradford fans comments he has had one purple patch.
  • Lewis Ward, if coming, seems almost certain to be a third choice keeper and probably someone we'd help along his coaching pathway, which is a nice marriage tbf. Reminds me a little of American football, where you get third-choice quarterbacks who get involved in coaching early on, or even players who at college go straight into coaching in their early 20s or something. All depends on what he wants and if there's a mutual fit/benefit.
  • Holmes and Abbey both heading to Luton from Reading. Reassuring to hear we were probably in for Abbey but ultimately had no chance if that’s who were competing with.

Nice ball from Dobbo yesterday that set the goal on its way wasn't it. To say he is simply a tackler is crazy, it's just he has to do so much of that because of the ineptitude of those around him.
We need him to stay and play alongside the better players we bring in. He will get better and better.

I agree. Earlier in the season he had a purple patch where he was outstanding, in all aspects of the game. And even though his form has dipped a little, (at least partly because the whole team’s performances have been so poor) we’ve now discovered he’s currently our best dead ball specialist. So if Bakinson, Coventry & Fiorelli turn out to be great, there’s no reason they can’t all be rotated, especially as injuries and suspensions will kick in at some stage.
2 of those 3 brought in to possibly replace Dobbo are loans, come the summer when they are out of contract who's to say that they will want to sign a permanent deal. They weren't getting games at their own clubs & by coming here they are basically putting themselves in the shop window. As you say JS there's no reason they can't be rotated & with our fitness record we need about 12 :# midfielders to see us through a season. Getting rid of Dobbo would be a huge mistake.
  • Going back to Ward, Swindon have just sacked their manager so if he's there as more of a coach then makes sense for him to go too.

He’s been that bad, you have to ask what did we see in him in the first place!

Was just listening to Charlton Live and in the post-match press conference Appleton confirms that the club are building a squad towards a new formation, like the one we saw on Saturday
Been desperate for Hector to play in a back 3 as I thought he’d thrive in it and we move to that the week he gets injured! Ahh Charlton

Interesting that Scott says 'With the players already in this January and more to come'. Seems confident of more activity and I can't imagine he's suggesting swapping a winger for a 3rd choice GK is credible, I wonder if we might see some names come in that we havent been so publically linked with?

With only 2 senior wingers, looks like appletons commited to a 352 or similar.
@DOUCHER thought you said he was brought in by Scott to play a 4-3-3?

Been saying for a long time that the squad is woefully unbalanced and we are stuck with half a squad who are better in 4-3-3 and half that are better in a 3-5-2.

Always assumed with the signing of May and Jones that a move to 3-5-2 was on the cards. And our signings this window seem to fit that more.

CBT will defo be off, it will just be how much money we hold out for.

Also on another note, if you wanted to come up with agent talk why would you use a club in Hungary for that? Considering the only other noise we have heard about Dobson was from American clubs, I wouldn’t be shocked.

No wonder he sacked his agent.

Seems like we’re going to have more through the door then.. I wonder what triggered this as I thought he was a decent option to have available..  a winger incoming perhaps? Or freeing up a loan slot / wages?
  • We currently have 6 loan players, including the mysterious Abankwah, making me wonder if there was no exit clause on either side.

The other 4 are FOUR midfielders and 1 attacking midfielder, which feels a really unbalanced use of the loan market.
That's one loan spot freed up...

I think the fact that L Watson, Fiorini and Fraser (if he sticks around) are natural 10's means he won't get a look in and if Appleton wants to experiment in there he could play May or TC as a 10. I'd guess CBT might be able to slot in there too if he sticks around

4 new players in already, so it's very believable that more signings will arrive.

I think with gillesphy here now and CBT potentially on his way out I could see this…

    AMB
    Watson - Jones - Hec - Gil - Edun
    Dobson - Bakinson / Lwat - Coventry
    Kanu / new - May

Still need a few faces through the door but maybe that’s where we are heading

  • I honestly thought early on Chem was going to be an excellent addition , but after how he's struggled for games under Appleton and was hooked at HT on Saturday I'm not that surprised he's gone back to Wolves. Would expect a striker to come in and fill that loan slot, although if it's Ladapo we're in for then it might be one that runs to the deadline
  • Thought Chem Campbell looked decent at times, especially against Cray at home, but I hear he didnt have a good game at the weekend  (maybe knew he was going back).

Or maybe he just wasn't good enough.
  • When CBT goes get Scully in as a replacement.

He was mentioned in an interview, I think with Coventry, about the lads from West Ham he’s still in touch with.

Cawley’s saying the same about the formation.

Guess it’ll be flexible at times with the box midfield we saw in the first half used occasionally, but mainly 3-5-2 with two out and out strikers. Been suggested on ITTV we want to sign two strikers, one permanent and one loan.

Easy to switch to a diamond too if one of the CBs can push up to become a DM.
I always assumed that this was the long term plan. Holden essentially started with it in pre season games, but a combination of CBT and Ness on that lefthand side was so ropey, and we ended up recruiting players really poorly.

So ended up with not enough of the right players to play 3-5-2 or if they did seem to be right like Abankwah, no one fancied him. But also no wingers to play 4-3-3, and fantastic striker who has still done well, but works better in a 2.

  • Well it looks like the squad is getting a well needed shake up. Let’s hope the quality of players incoming remains high. 🤞🏼
  • Scully is just coming back from a knee injury so don't think Pompey will be letting him go
