Wow. I can't remember any previous Premier League points deductions for financial reasons.
Portsmouth?
Tottenham. Docked 12 points back in 1994 which would have applied to the 1994/95 season, along with a ban from that seasons FA Cup and a £600k fine. The points and FA cup ban were later reversed and Spurs were given a £1.5m fine instead.
I can't believe for a single second that Man City are clean, yet they get away with it
THIS .. I presume that the powers that be have done a proper audit of all Prem & EFL clubs and that the result is that Everton's is the most egregious case of abusing the rules .. however, the penalty does seem very severe and smacks of 'an example must be set' .. Everton have come into a bit of form lately, so hopefully, IF their appeal fails, it will not mean relegation .. Sean Dyche and the new owners surely deserve better than that
2 points behind Luton with better goal difference and 26 games to play. I think they will be ok. Its just put them in the mix with may be 2 or 3 clubs at the wrong end of the table. They do get results where as the others were not doing as well.
The Moshiri thing is a red herring really. The idea of the rules is so that clubs are sustainable, relying on 1 bloke to bankroll your club is not sustainable. What if he loses interest like the Reading owner? What if he passes his business on to someone else who then doesn’t invest? Yes the sanctions against him were pretty unprecedented but it’s irresponsible to rely on one person.
Everton are definitely being used as an example to show that a regulator isn’t needed but there’s nothing to suggest this won’t be a consistent policy. City and Chelsea are both being investigated and this is a warning to other clubs thinking of taking financial risks.
At the end of the day you’ll get punished for breaking rules, whatever the intention. It’s the same as on the pitch, you can get a red card without meaning to commit the offence.
I also have a feeling they’ve given them the deduction now, strategically. They wouldn’t want to lose Everton from the league.
The investigation has been going on a couple of years, and they’ve timed it fairly early into a season where they can see that the competition down the bottom is weak.
Seem some people saying online that the punishment seems harsh as Everton were only 20m over the allowed 105m loss limit.
Everyone seems to be forgetting that their 3 year losses were actually 372m! They were actually let off a lot of their losses due to Covid and their new stadium but it could've been a lot worse.
I didn't see the report, but there was a trailer on the news the other day that supposedly a tv company (C4 News ?) proved a link between Abramovic's finances and Putin's. If this is true surely there'd be good reason for the footballing authorities to come down hard on Chelski.
Chelsea were used for dirty money when Putin's bitch, Abramovich pumped money into the west London odious scum club. They should be put into the National League and banned from Europe for Ever.
They tried to launder the filthy money purloined from the Russian people by placement, layering and integration. How Abramovich got away with it for so long is a complete disgrace when it was so obvious he was Putin's man in London.
Chelsea's only defence is all the suspects have now left the building.
There are 4 weak premier side this season and for once Everton aren't one of them. If this happened last season they would've dropped. Appeal against the 10 points but they want it resolved this season, not carried on 24/25.
I have it on very good authority that Manchester City were incredibly fortunate to get away when, in July 2020, a three-man Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) panel cleared City, by a majority verdict, of the serious charge of overstating revenues. In February 2020, following a hearing before 5 international judges, they were banned by UEFA from European competition for two seasons and also fined €30m (£26.8m). Why would such a three-man arbitral panel (including a partner in a US law firm) be in a better position to determine the issue ?
The ban was overturned by CAS and the fine was reduced to €10m (£8.9m). At the hearing, the panel found most of the breaches alleged were not established or that they were time-barred, which effectively meant they occurred too long ago for UEFA to do anything about them.
Significantly, no time-bar or limitation defence will be available to City in the Premier League proceedings.
It's noteworthy that the Premier League's charges against City were only laid the day before the outline legislation was put before Parliament - the spurious message being that "we can look after after our own affairs" - which they plainly can't. The proposed legislative introduction of a football regulator was plainly the catalyst. Let's hope that the legislation reaches the statute books in short order and is not delayed by the latest governmental nonsense trumpeted following the Supreme Court decison this week.
The Premier League is run by the current 20 member clubs and it's them who decide who will be punished. Apart from the big boys, any of the others could easily find themselves in a relegation scrap if they happen to find themselves on a bad run of games, so if they have a chance of filling one of those places with a rival team, they will, so I'm not surprised that they voted for this.
I'm more annoyed at Sheffield Wednesday getting away with breaking the rules leaving Charlton relegated.
What about the year that West Ham fielding illegal players that kept them us and sent us down? Hmmm.
Little old Charlton
Trouble with that theory is we didn't finish 3rd bottom. It would be Sheffield United who were spared.
West Ham paid £20million compensation to Sheffield United. In yhe scheme of things and looking at the two clubs trajectory since then, it was just loose change for West Ham.
Some clubs are considering legal compensation fron Everton, one is Leeds and I can't remember the other, possibly Burnley.
Evertons takeover by 777 has not been completed and they are byno means guaranteed to pass fit and proper. There is a danger that compensation claims if realised could push Everton deep into debt and with the ownership issue possibly administration and 15 point deduction. Probably won't happen but definitely a possibility.
The case against City is going to be a long and brutal fight to the death, the idea you wrap it up in 3 months is just not possible
If one of the charges is strong PL should take it forward. Come back to the others if necessary. Justice delayed is justice denied, eg She Weds were penalised after we were relegated, if had been that season we would have stayed up.

If we had finished above the Blades and got the £20m instead, presumably we wouldn't have needed rescuing by the Spivs, which led to Roland etc...

The powers that be will always find a way to protect the real money makers for the league when they need to.

The club are probably a bit relieved deep down.

A frivolous appeal and they end up with a 15 point deduction...
