Every year I lose money backing Charlton for promotion, barring 2019) so I thought I’d avoid having a bet this year. But couldn’t resist a peek at the odds. They make fairly grim reading.

    Latest Paddy Power odds:

    Birmingham 3/1

    Bolton 8/1

    Huddersfield 8/1

    Wrexham 11/1

    Peterborough 12/1

    Rotherham 12/1

    Reading 14/1

    Barnsley 14/1

    Charlton 16/1

    Stockport 18/1

    Makes pretty depressing reading.

It’s going to take a lot of good signings to shift those odds.

    Not really.

Stick £50 on Charlton and the odds will shorten.

Betting odds are not based on probability but on money wagered.
    Off you go then Henry...😉

  • Players lying on exotic beaches considering their options. If they are in demand they will let their agents negotiate the best deals. Then it's do they like a certain club or chase the money.
If that's the case why have Rotherham signed 7 players..?

Must be because Rotherham is such a nice place to live.
Rotherham isn’t but you don’t need to go far before it is.
Exactly! I can see Rotherham from where I'm sitting. Lovely place..... from a distance. A bit grubby close up! It's highly unlikely any monied players will live anywhere near the New York Stadium, as there is little housing and what there is, is not at the top of the housing ladder. Probably still get a terrace for £50k. Then again they might be aspiring Robbie Fowler's in the business world.

To be fair, I wonder how many of our players live in Charlton?

At around 900k plus for a semi-detached with no garage, I'm not sure our players could afford to live in Charlton!

Would like Wilks, but he has always previously played up north. Would he come south?
It'd probably do him good. He's had a career pottering around almost every yorkshire club and his family history doesn't help.
    He's a wrong 'un then?
  • The longer the odds the better because it will mean we will all clean up when we’re home and hosed by mid-March 🤣

    Don't be silly.

I was pointing out that it wouldn't, as JS stated the opposite, to "shift those odds".

If you back us every season surely it is better to have a punt at big odds.
Odds compilers probably read football forums and many posters on here have little faith even though it is early days.
  • It's Charlton init?  If they were even money shoe-ins for promotion they'd fuck it up! If they were relegation certs they'd probably have over 100 pts in the bag before May.  What are the odds on midtable obscurity, because that'll be where my 50p would go?

We were 14/1 during the summer when Chris Powell bought all the best players in the league & we romped home with over 100 points.

I don’t think 16/1 is long enough for a team that just finished 16th & needs a whole new first team.
  • I backed that then

Makes a change from Curbishley 16-1

Rotherham 12-1 looks very generous, with the players they've signed and Steve Evans' record.

The odds are altered when bets are placed, but they don’t come from nowhere. A market is established before a single bet is placed, based on what the bookies specialists think the probability is.
Yes, Charlton could end up as odds on favourites if enough people bet on them, but they won’t. People aren't stupid. (PS I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before Henners).

I mildly disagree. If we made some sensational signings more people would bet on us and the odds might drop as a result.
    Massive ‘if’ of course.

I know. I tend to do an each way bet for the title (1/4 odds for 2nd or 3rd) and a bet on promotion.

    About 10/1 on, I expect 😂

Another 10 minutes of my life I won't get back.
Now it's become the betting discussion thread.
Anyone have an idea when it will be worth checking back for actual rumours?

Last week of the window would be a good bet ;)
  • Hopefully when they do start to announce signings it’s very matter of fact. IMHO the mystery tweets etc are a bit of a joke now after our worse season in decades delivered by a revolving door of mediocre signings.

Would prefer a photo of player and onto the next…giving out the message that this season the club is totally focused on one aim, promotion.

  • Surprised free agent Herbie Kane hasn't been picked up yet. From what I have seen online only Plymouth showing any real interest.
