The split sessions meant that Rodwell answered the question about ownership, which surely should have been more of a Carter and Methven question.
Indeed I'm still a bit confused as to who does what between Rodwell and Scott, and why Rodwell was at Sparrow's Lane at 7pm anyway. Indeed why him and Jones couldn't have driven over to The Valley for the session, seeing that it's only 15 minutes away, what would they have been doing at 6:45pm on a Thursday evening that meant they were still at Sparrow's Lane?
Jon Whitfield and Lewis Catt appointed to the new Advisory Board.
Get the fuck in Defo the two best candidates
Brilliant. They should be running the supporters Trust as well.
Of course anyone who wants to change the trust could stand for election on the board, doesn’t seem to happen people just pile on. I haven’t been able to watch tonight and I’m sure the criticism is valid but if people want to change something they have the option to
Nothing wrong with the concept of a Supporters Trust. Every club should have one, but its how its run is important
Sure but it can only be run by the people who volunteer to run it. If you don’t like it you have the option to change it
just need to better gauge what their supporters actually think is important.

As you have as well. As we all have.
Completely agree. I just think it’s interesting that anytime they do something it gets criticised but as far as I’m aware those criticising don’t stand to join the board. That might be because they don’t have time which is totally fine but important to remember it’s easy to criticise and far harder to enact change
it doesn't take a lot of research to establish what the supporters think is important, and I dont think a new sign is top of the agenda.
Unfortunate to you (and the weirdos who wet their knickers today about a sign, especially a sign promoting equality and diversity) the sign wasn’t anything to do with CAST.
the All Different, All Together, All Charlton sign has been put up as part of the clubs continuing efforts to develop the EEDI of the club and Community trust- as well as making it clearer that The Valley welcomes all!
Blame Paul Elliott and the EDI Working group for it, if you really dislike it
I like the sign and what it represents but it was a poor question
It was a last minute question and reflected the dogs abuse on socials from a small minority of morons calling it out as 'woke'.
The answer to the first question about what they believed would be the hottest topic showed more about their lack of understanding than CAST's misreading. Anyone with any sense would appreciate the biggest issue as being The Valley and CM/GC should have responded with that.
If they said the Valley, other people would have slaughtered them for not saying getting out of League One … if they’d said getting out of League One … and so on and so forth.

Would they?
Many would have said new signings but if CAST thought that the Valley was the biggest issue then they should have asked about it, not guess the top question or what about the new sign.
CM eventually made the point that EDI is both the right thing to do AND good business, which I agree with.
It was still a poor question.
The problem with asking about the sign, is that it leads to a completely non contentious discussion about the Community Trust. Everyone know it's great, which is why it doesn't need to come up in a Q&A session.
It would be like going to a Tottenham Q&A session, and having Levy talk for 10 minutes about the concerts they'd be holding in the summer.
If we don't buy two or three immediate starters we won't get promoted, Small will leave, Leaburn will be sold and there's no guarantee we'll get out of the division next year.
THE SMT are NOT fit for purpose.
Waffle and conjecture. They give me no confidence. Fair play to CM to say until we get out of this division he doesn't want to talk about success.
He's right.
Sadly I dint think he'll be here IF we ever do get out of this division again... upwards!
What did you expect him to do in that moment? Interrupt to agree? Nothing he said elsewhere in the interview contradicted what Rodwell said.
If the right player is available at the right price, they will bring them in. But they won’t do deals for the wrong players at bad prices just to placate the fans.
Re the ownership of ground and training ground, Rodwell is positive that things are moving forward. Moving forward in what direction is not clear.
& he thinks they have another meeting coming up. Seriously you don't know. Anyway Carter let the cat out of the bag later by mentioning the lease negotiations.
I picked up on that , was that intentional from GC

I simply don't believe this collective "management" are good enough to get us promoted.
4th highest wage bill. Arguably the richest ownership in the division yet constantly being outperformed by smaller, better run, better managed clubs.
You look for the positives i look at the realities. If this management don't buy two or three players this transfer window it is only going to get harder to get promoted under their leadership.
All I hear are excuses. Charlie said it isn't that difficult to turn fortunes around. He continues to disprove that theory.

Name one that is run significantly better, and how exactly.
Alternatively stand for election, get voted in, and show us all how to run it better.
no knowledge on the trust either pro or anti, just think that the questions, that they thought to be important to the fans, were completely misjudged and therefore give the impression that they do not have their finger on the pulse of what is the fans priorities.
They are not the questions I'd have asked either. The first one might have worked if Heather was moderating a live interview with them, with follow up questions and in front of a live audience. Second one seemed pretty marginal to me too, but I suppose Heather figured that all the most obvious questions would be asked by multiple fans, and she's always aware the Trust has to represent the broad fanbase. I'm sure she didn't think the banner was the most important issue to ask about.
The Supporters Trust, and most other Supporters Trusts would much prefer a live meeting of sustained questioning, or regular minuted closed meetings, with owners/SMTs. Very few STs manage to get that. The more "issues' there are among supporters, the less likely owners and SMTs agree to such formats.
Anyway my response was specifically to Shirty5 who has been making similar comments like that for the last 10 years without ever explaining how it would be run better, let alone getting himself elected to run it better. And I've met with a lot of ST board members from other clubs in the last 10 years ago, they all get the same kind of shit hurled at them. Two stalwarts from the Spurs Trust, name of Martin Cloake and Kat Law were out here a few weeks ago so I caught up with them. Top people. Managed to get Daniel Levy to agree to minuted meetings. Few years back, Kat was getting vicious dogs' abuse on Twitter from mighty Spurs keyboard warriors about the state of the stadium bogs, I mean like, as if it were her responsibility to get them fixed. Thing was, they weren't the bogs at WHL. They weren't even bogs in an English stadium. It was effing Red Star Belgrade!! Kat was there of course, they are away with Spurs most games, and apparently because she was there, she should have had the Serbian khazis fixed.
Good luck to John and Lewis, let's see how much they manage to achieve.
Well I guess our inability of late to get big fees for player sales or pay big fees means we are living up to ‘never knowingly under sold ’ !

Our ownership are not richer than that of Birmingham or Wycombe for starters. The Huddersfield owner is absolutely minted too, we're in the top 5 but definitely not the riches in the division

That doesn't contradict my point at all, that's a different one altogether
Why is it just assumed that these billionaires are all stupid and have been duped by Methven and his crew? Maybe they also believe in trying to build something sensibly and not throwing silly money about at it
These are billionaires, some with background in football. To me the latter is much more likely than the former
Some good ie the top line finances although we seemed to have skipped a year.
Net transfer spend of £800k to £1m
CM sometimes lets slip more than he intends.
IE bringing catering in house, change in shirt sponsors. Shame those issues weren't probed more but you can't blame in-house interviewers for not going full Jeremy Paxman
Think he confirmed what I said a few weeks back eg the big money guys are happy to put in what they said they would (£10m pa) but they aren't going to splash the cash over and above that.

On to the negative. The questioning was largely vague and soft, and especially from the reps. The fans questions from whattsapp were better and more to the point.
And Ali Maxwell: why? Must be a dozen CAFC fans who could do that.
Technically it was poor, sound was uneven and someone tell CM to look into the camers
I actually think all the fan engagement stuff is good but it's not very sexy for most fans and I have my own issues right now about how much it is real when push comes to shove.
Pleased for Jon and Lewis. I still thing the advisory board set up is totally wrong but that's for another debate.
I'm a big critic of CAST so this will be dismissed by some as having an axe to grind but tonight Heather didn't present CAST as an organisation likely to ask tough or probing questions or that would hold the board to account.
Overall, it was good that it happened but I think the club over managed it due to a lack of confidence/fear of difficult questions when in reality they would have been better to just take whatever came. Nothing should really come as a surprise to them and none of the four are that inarticulate or unable to think on their feet.
So, in a nutshell......
The owners are happy to keep ploughing in £10m a year just to stay in this division, with every few seasons a player sale might be enough to buy a couple more mediocre players that will help us finish 10th. Because they have no ambition to ever spend any money that might get us out of this poxy league.
Re the ownership of ground and training ground, Rodwell is positive that things are moving forward. Moving forward in what direction is not clear.

If they aren't wanting to put in anymore than the £10m per season that keeps us afloat I doubt they are going to spend North of £30m to buy the ground & SL.

RIght-o.
Spending millions more on transfers is not the only way to progress a football club. And because we aren’t doing that, that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to progress
You can progress by being smarter with your recruitment and by developing the players you have or bring in.
How much did Luton spend on their journey from league 2 up the leagues? They developed the players they had (some went from league 2 to championship and even premier league), sold some for good fees and reinvested with smarter recruitment. This is clearly our plan and we’ve even got a manager that was part of that same journey at Luton
Just because we aren’t throwing millions at things (which this ownership group, nor any other ownership group aren’t going to do in our state, so let’s be realistic) that doesn’t mean we are going nowhere. We’ve not done it well at all so far, but I think there are signs that this season we are starting to turn things around in the right direction. 10+ years of decline aren’t going to be fixed in 1 summer but unrealistically hoping for a magic billionaire to come in and plough money into transfers is 1. Not ever going to happen when we don’t own our assets and 2. Not the only way to succeed, as plenty of clubs like Luton have shown
Didn't watch, can someone advise whether questions were asked about the state of the pitch and if so, what is the reason for the mess it's in and what is being done to sort it out?
If you’re right and the only answer to our problems is owners losing £15m a season investing heavily on players, then we will be stuck here forever because no one is going to be willing to put that money into us in our current state
Fortunately, plenty of clubs have shown it can be done in other ways so there is still hope for us
Didn't watch, can someone advise whether questions were asked about the state of the pitch and if so, what is the reason for the mess it's in and what is being done to sort it out?
I noticed for one thing we're advertising for a Groundsperson.
Whether the profit from player sales comes from home grown, or from bought and sold players, the key question that needed answering, is "How and who is going to find the required stream of top quality players, that will be attracted to Charlton (in League One), that will achieve on field success AND finance the club independant of owner investment?"
Didn't watch, can someone advise whether questions were asked about the state of the pitch and if so, what is the reason for the mess it's in and what is being done to sort it out?
Yes it was asked about. Don't recall the full answer but the question was asked and answered.
Charlie did say he would like to have more contact with supporters and mention Kent and the southeast.
Well Charlie if you were around in the 1990,s Charlton Athletic Supporters Club had branches all over the southeast of England and further. Some still continue even today.
You wouldn’t have stood a chance back then with the Charlton fans and the action you and the other SMT members take.

Then they should employ executives with the ability and motivation to deliver it. Can you not see Methven for what he is?
I didn’t watch it as I had to give a briefing on local government reorganisation, which may or may not have been more interesting, but the financials tell you all you need to know and should tell the owners.
The owner was a complete basket case in 2022/23. The 2023/24 figures aren’t disclosed. And guess what, the operating loss is still out of control.
With regard to the ‘sign’ question. It was back in pre-internet days, when it was because of fanzines, some broadcasters, even some new style comedians, that people were minded to stand up against racism against black players in football. Players that most of us football fans up and down the country were cheering on when they played for our own teams. It was around that time that Charlton Athletic football club, well supported by the diaspora around our club, was at the forefront and inception of anti racist initiatives such as Red White and Black and Kick it Out. Something I am very proud of that it happened so strongly with us, and I made my own contribution in a small way. I took the question about the sign and its inclusive message as being one that invited comment about how we are as a club, for everybody. Indeed the answer pointed to the agenda of Paul Elliott (one of our own and Lewisham born) who has received national recognition for his work on inclusivity. Heather asked a decent enough question, not particularly irrelevant in the light of the ongoing journey towards greater harmony in football and at Charlton.
The first question to ask. Is why do they ant to own an English football club
That will drop them £10m a year for the foreseeable
For me is why does any one , particularly a foreign person want too own a football club. When they do not make money. Why Reading, why Millwall, why Sheffield Wednesday, why Wycombe and so on it must be approaching 50% of EFL clubs owned by overseas money.
If we don't buy two or three immediate starters we won't get promoted, Small will leave, Leaburn will be sold and there's no guarantee we'll get out of the division next year.

It would be like going to a Tottenham Q&A session, and having Levy talk for 10 minutes about the concerts they'd be holding in the summer.
If the right player is available at the right price, they will bring them in. But they won’t do deals for the wrong players at bad prices just to placate the fans.
The comment if the right player at the right price is not really an actual defined idea.... nobody knows if they're the right price
We can agree to disagree. We have for years. I still remain unbeaten in our differences over each transfer window. I can't wait to lose one.
These are billionaires, some with background in football. To me the latter is much more likely than the former
The owners are happy to keep ploughing in £10m a year just to stay in this division, with every few seasons a player sale might be enough to buy a couple more mediocre players that will help us finish 10th. Because they have no ambition to ever spend any money that might get us out of this poxy league.
RIght-o.
It would be nice for once to be able to say in August......" this squad looks pretty decent, I reckon we could be in with a shout of the play offs".
You can progress by being smarter with your recruitment and by developing the players you have or bring in.
Not the only way to succeed, as plenty of clubs like Luton have shown
Fortunately, plenty of clubs have shown it can be done in other ways so there is still hope for us

You wouldn’t have stood a chance back then with the Charlton fans and the action you and the other SMT members take.
