Absolutely love the Olympics, am barely going to be able to watch any of it this year and gutted about it
    Love it as well.

Looking forward to the three weeks every four years where everyone at work is an expert on the different intricacies of the kneeling, standing and prone components of the rifle shooting, and the likely wind changes in the offshore sailing
Please advise us of their comments on lacrosse.
It is not an Olympic Sport
  • I’ve mentioned it here a while back, Mrs GA cousin’s lad is representing NZ in the BMX, (Rico Bearman). Her cousin was a professional road racer and has been in the TDF. Her Uncle is a Charlton fan and moved down under many years ago.

Apologies just checked it's coming back in 2028.
  • Hope the 1500 metres lives up to its billing with the grudge between Josh Kerr and Ingebrigtsen boiling over.  Go on Josh you can do it!
  • Dunno if anyone caught the excellent documentary 'Daley: Olympic Superstar'? (Available on iPlayer)

It tells the story of the complex man behind one of the greatest all round athletes the World has ever seen.  Dedication is only half the story.  Well worth a watch imo.
  • Another one to look out for is Path to Paris: The Hunt for Gold - starts tomorrow on C4 at 4:55pm. (2 parts). It follows British Athletes as they prepare for the games.

Keeley Hodgkinson, Josh Kerr, Jake Wightman and Morgan Lake feature.

even as a 13 year old, I was not impressed in 1984 with his whistling the national anthem and homophobic tee shirts

    Yeah, that's the dilemma.
Feet of clay and all that.

That has affected his legacy. He's arguably the greatest sportman Britain has ever produced, but how many people born this century are aware of him?

As a kid I liked his phonebook adverts with the cartoon cat!

    and he played for Wimbledon
  • It's live on BBC1 all day, every day from early in the morning until it gets dark.
If that blanket coverage isn't sufficient it's also on Eurosport all day & evening.

    The cat?
  • For the sake of the world’s climate, I hope this will be the last Olympics staged in this way.

I cut him a bit of slack there.

He was sent away to boarding school aged 7 by the authorities.  He had a mother who didn't love him and a father who was shot dead in the street.  I wouldn't be surprised if he was on the spectrum - his obsession with the sport was absolute.  He put his heart and soul in and he wasn't paid a penny piece in the early days.
  • Men’s 4x200m freestyle relay. A few different teams going for it including GB. Always a cracker

That looks amazing.  Although, I'd have thought it would be a bit chilly for volleyball in Blackpool.
  • I am looking forward to seeing Andy Murray finally bow out of his tennis career.  Britain's most successful professional athlete, in my view.
  • The artistic swimming is a new one I’m looking forward to now that I partake in synchronised swimming.
Our friends son Finn Lynch is part of the Irish sailing team so will watch that.
And know loads of the Irish rowers so will be watching them too.

I was going to make a hilarious joke about which sailing class your friend Finn is going to be competing in.  But they've dropped the Finn class this year, so I won't.
  • Yesterday, Charlotte Dujardin was profiled in Horse and Hound and described as someone who "could become Britain's most decorated female athlete of all time" were she to win any medal at the Paris Olympics.

Today, she has pulled out, following a video released from four years ago.  Heroine to zeroine.

Just quickly thinking of some of the rowers and cyclists we have had, plus Mo Farah, puts Murray a long way down in my opinion for Britain's most successful athlete.

Rowers and cyclists are - ostensibly at least - not "professional" in the same sense as tennis players.  It's an argument that's unwinnable, of course, but he is - in my opinion - Britain's most successful professional athlete.  It's interesting that ESPN ranked him third in their list; but numbers one and two were not rowers, cyclists, track and field athletes or, in fact, Olympians.

He's defo up there but Hamilton, Calazaghe, Lewis, Anderson are four that spring to mind as being above him for me.
  • Murray won 3 out of 60 grand slams he played in

  • Pretty dramatic to pull out - from that and from her statement it sounds to me like she may have hit a pupil and/or horse, just a guess of course. Ah well , Strictly beckons …

...Which is three more than every British male tennis player in the open era.

Added to that, he made eleven grand slam final appearances, eight more than all other British male tennis players combined.

Added to that, he's one of only five British men to win the Olympic singles gold medal; and the only one, of any nationality, to retain the singles title.
  • But in the biggest tournaments (The Slams) he won 1 in 20
Greatest British tennis player maybe, but best British sportsman?, nah not for me
