I am looking forward to seeing Andy Murray finally bow out of his tennis career.  Britain's most successful professional athlete, in my view.
Not for me - how about Lennox Lewis, cavendish, loads of others ahead of Murray
Lennox Lewis, Mark Cavendish and others are brilliant athletes, no doubt.  But did either of them demonstrate they were so far ahead of every other British competitor in their sport?

The list of Britain's World Heavyweight Champions is Lennox Lewis, Michael Bentt, Herbie Hide, Frank Bruno, Henry Akinwande, David Haye, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

The list of British Tour de France Winners (in recent years) is Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas.

The list of British tennis Grand Slam winners in the open era is: Andy Murray. The list of Men's Singles Olympic Gold medals retained is: Andy Murray.
Apart from the fact that he was a great tennis player the reason he was so far ahead of other British tennis players is that they were mainly shit.

Whereas in the other sports you mention there was plenty of world class opposition.

The non-British opponents Murray was competing with, sometimes beating, were the three best to ever compete in the sport. It was a truly incredible time for Tennis and, for a while, Murray was up there.

The other sportsmen on the list were incredible - they wouldn’t be in the conversation if they weren’t - but Murray was a British sportsman competing with the all time best in a very popular sport.

    Not disagreeing with you.

I was replying to Chizz regarding Murray being miles better than other British players
  • It’s only on for just over two weeks? I always thought it was a lot longer than that.

    As events start today:
Football and Rugby 7's, it is 19 days long.
    So just under 3 weeks.

  • Have the rugby on at the moment - the Stade de France looks awesome with the purple running track
  • Purple running track, is the infield green?

Just ripping off Wimbledon, can't they think for themselves.

    Chaos in the football
  • Football latest
Egypt 0 Dominican Republic 0 final score
Argentina 1 Morocco 2 due to resume at 18.00 with 3 minutes remaining, after a long delay due to crowd disorder, match will resume in an empty stadium.

trying to figure out what's happened here. is this right?

    -argentina score equaliser
-morocco fans kick off, ref suspends game and all the fans are thrown out
-then var rules out the equaliser
-final 3 minutes to be played in an empty stadium

it's quite hard to follow as a lot of places are reporting the draw as a FT result

As for boxing…..Lewis is head and shoulders above every other HW boxer in that list.

Possibly.  But, at the sake pf repeating the point, the list of British Heavyweight World Boxing Champions is eight; the list of British Men's Singles Winners at Grand Slams is Andy Murray.

You are making a good case for him to be best British tennis player but not overall sportsman.

Lisa Adams has won 3 waterskiing world titles and not other Brit has done that , so she must be up there with Murray in the conversation…

You make a very strong case.  But, in my view - and it can only be a question of opinions - Andy Murray has been a greater professional sportsman than Lisa Adams.

Male maybe, Wade was more successful.

Alfie Hewett. Current no. 1 in singles and doubles, 30 slams, career slam in both singles and doubles

I have little interest in watching but he's undoubtedly more successful than Murray
  • 12 mins of injury time in the Iraq v Ukraine game, a million minutes in the Argentina v Morocco match. Are these the same FIFA rules that were used during the last World Cup when there was tons of injury time?
  • On the Andy Murray thing, yes he won “only” three Grand Slam titles during his career.

If you take the 12 year span between his first Grand Slam appearance and the major injury he suffered in 2017, 42/52 slams & Olympics titles were won by three men who are the greatest to ever play the sport - we will likely never see domination like that ever again.

The ten major honours in 12 years that weren’t won by those men were shared as below:

    - Juan Martin Del Potro (1)
    - Andy Murray (5)
    - Stan Wawrinka (3)
    - Marin Cilic (1)

Murray quite easily the best ever British tennis player, male or female, and IMO gets into contention for best ever British sportsperson too.

Dunno if anyone caught the excellent documentary 'Daley: Olympic Superstar'? (Available on iPlayer)

It tells the story of the complex man behind one of the greatest all round athletes the World has ever seen.  Dedication is only half the story.  Well worth a watch imo.
even as a 13 year old, I was not impressed in 1984 with his whistling the national anthem and homophobic tee shirts
That has affected his legacy. He's arguably the greatest sportman Britain has ever produced, but how many people born this century are aware of him?

As a kid I liked his phonebook adverts with the cartoon cat!
Daley doesn't even get mentioned in the recent best British sportsman debate on here! The BBC documentary was great, although Colin Hart seems to hold a strange grunge against him.

Looking forward to the opening ceremony, wonder if they will celebrate their great military victories? 😃

    Redgrave - 5 golds at 5 olympics
    Pinsent - 4 in 4
    Chris Hoy
    Laura Trott
    Adam Peaty

a very quick 5 Olympians off the top of my head who you could argue would challenge Murray for that title..

there will be dozens over the years that would be in the same position.

  • I think you’re on the ropes Chizz.  Good conversation though.
  • Really disappointed that the Olympics are only on restricted BBC coverage, used to love watching the heats of the athletics on the red button, plus sports I wouldn't normally watch like the canoeing, or open water swimming etc. I don't think many will subscribe to Discovery+ for the Olympics alone.
  • Can’t believe there’s been no coverage of the nonsense in the Argentina v Morocco game. Nothing on the news at all 🤷‍♀️

Dame Sarah Storey, 5 Swimming golds, 12 cycling golds across 8 paralympics is going to take some beating.

Amazing record in two sports and longevity and a wonderful role model for people with disabilities but ok, put me in the stocks but Sarah Storey just doesn't have the competition when she competes in the Paralympic.
She was an able bodied track pursuit champion despite her one hand never growing after being caught in the umbilical cord in the womb.
  • So Ireland (and therefore all home nations interest) gone from the rugby before the Olympics have even officially started.
  • The All Black sevens too
