  • superb from KJT pushing the goat that close, so pleased for her

Spain win the men’s football gold medal. Good summer for them.
  • A skinny athlete wins the women's shot put. I wonder if this might change the sport going forward towards quicker throwers, rather then bulkier ones?
  • List of all time point totals.  QI  :)

  • Americans own the finishing straight again in 400 hurdles. Oh well Norway you always have the Winter Olympics to look forward to.

400m hurdles on ice, now that's something I'd want to watch!

A NZ girl got silver with a personal best.  She’s not skinny, not by any means.

Her "look" is the normal on for shot putters, male and female, who are usually very heftily built. The German winner tonight is a former Heptathlete, who's much slighter but faster.
  • Khelif wins gold in the women’s boxing. Great result
Loads of people saying it's great for her after the bullying she's been subjected to. Unfortunately it's also added fuel to the fire of people claiming she has an unfair advantage, and comments like "obviously they won, any bloke would win the women's boxing"

    Not a great result.
  • A dream come true for the lad from Laghouat.

    For who exactly?
    Not women's sport.
Why is it relevant to women's sport? It's a one-off fiasco because there's no valid governing body for Olympic boxing. The rest of the boxing world presumably has gender tests that people are happy with. Or then again perhaps not, given that the two boxers at the centre of all this boxed for years and the IBA did nothing until it (doubtlessly purely by coincidence) happened to damage the IOC by happening after the IOC's qualification process was already under way. If the IBA was that bothered about governance of the Olympics they could have taken the organising of the Games back on just by agreeing to a lot of reforms to make corruption more difficult. For some inexplicable reason which I can't possibly begin to guess at, they weren't willing to do that. So the boxing is being run by the IOC who don't do gender tests and aren't set up to administer sports.

None of this has any long-term effect on women's sport because all the other sports have their own systems which they will continue to follow. Boxing outside the Olympics will presumably carry on doing whatever it was or wasn't doing before. And as for boxing at the Olympics, from what I can see the politics are unlikely to get resolved and there probably won't be boxing in 2028. Which is a bad thing, but not really the fault of a woman from Algeria who still hasn't been told what evidence the IBA claim to have against her.

I'll miss Olympic boxing, I guess, but truth be told the bout results have been a farce for years. Replace it with speed-climbing and move on.
  • I cannot believe that got into the olympics as a sport. I would though like to see break dancing in strictly. That would be entertaining.

The 4th Spanish goal was an impressive move. Yes, the French were pushed right up the pitch looking for a late equaliser so there wasn't a defence to beat, but the keeper threw the ball past the half way line and landed it at the feet of the only player Spain had left up there. A great bit of skill when every instinct must have been screaming at him to just kick it towards the far corner and but a few seconds.

Very Peter Schmeichelish. Brilliant distribution with his hands, something which has slightly gone out of the game with the emphasis on keepers being top class with their feet.

It won't be in the next Olympics.
  • Didn’t like Brazils attitude in the beach volleyball final. Was funny when the DJ stuck on John Lennon when it kicked off tho.
  • Chess is not included in the Olympic Games, although recognised as a sport by the International Olympic Committee.

During lockdown my son and I developed a fantastic sport of throwing tea bags into mugs from across the kitchen, that should clearly be an Olympic event.
  • Is Breaking a one and done sport in terms of Olympics?

  • Waiting (weighting?) for the weightlifting to start.

The organisation has been first class so far.

Teabagging in The Olympics? That I would like to see
  • I knew jack about the bob boulder climbing before these games, but it is clearly worthy of being an Olympic sport.
Their hands must be as strong as vices, I bet they never have trouble opening a new jar of marmalade.
  • Squash coming to the LA Games will be quite an interesting addition.
