There was nothing negative about our display yesterday.
Wigan are credible, the vast majority of their acquisitions are from the premier league.
Presumably we had to travel up on Friday and twiddle thumbs waiting for that stupid kick off time and we kicked the wrong way for them so they got the glare of the sun second half after we rode the glare out.
Godden wasn’t available in order to add a bit more of an option, absolutely no player hid, Alex Mitchell was (in my opinion) thrown a bit by his early head injury (note to medical staff, a great big white head bandage looks so much better than what Mitchell was given yesterday), the substitutions were excellently timed and Nathan Jones held his nerve to see what Wigan would do with their substitutions first. The goal from Jones was beautifully taken, the tackle from Ramsey was Costaesque, the interventions from Fraser were superb and we saw his long throw for the first time, every player made a good contribution as long as they were on the pitch (you paying attention Fraser?), and our away support was terrific. So what are the downsides? None apart from the stupid yellow cards for Anderson and Nathan Jones.
How can there be any other downsides with a clean sheet away win first game of the season and three lovely points?
Think the strikers played well considering what they were given.
The 'problem' is that the midfield (other than one Coventry ball to the right wing) doesn't look like they're capable of creating chances for our strikers. It'll be mostly on the wing-backs putting crosses in, or balls over the top from the defense.
Yesterday it didn't matter because our job was more defensively focused but in a home game trying to unlock the opposition it'll be interesting to see if we still line up with that midfield 3.
Good match against some tough opponents who gave us a test, game was won by the defence today, and congrats to Jones taking his goal like a forward...on we go...
That was an excellent performance in a very tight game, either side could have won it but we looked more certain at the back with Jones and Mitchell outstanding. The last ditch header away by Edwards and the saving tackle by Ramsey were highlights but the two centre backs won everything in the air. Midfield worked hard but didn't seem to want to push on, maybe because of Campbell not being able to find space.
I don't think Wigan could have won it. On the very rare occasion they got a sight of goal there was a defender there to deal with it. Aside from a deflected shot wide we dealt with everything before they even got the shot away. Wigan were tidy and had a lot of the ball but that back 5 weren't letting them near it today
You are forgetting Ramsey's saving tackle and Edwards saving diving header. Both sides created little, Jones finish is great but it comes from a mistake by there defender in misjudging the bounce, we didn't make that sort of mistake and probably deserved to win it on that stat alone.
I'm not, I covered them when I said that we dealt with everything before they got the shot away. That's the point, it's all very well Wigan trying to create but we were so organised and had such good shape that we didn't even let those chances register as shots on goal. It's not like we lived dangerously, even in their best passages Wigan found themselves unable to trouble Mannion. You can't win if you can't even get a shot away.
I think you are right but the same could be said about us and we both agree that it was the bounce that the defender misread that led to the goal, I think we both agree it was probably our defence that won us the day, and you haven't heard that phrase too often in the last few years.

I think Wigan are a top ten outfit, especially when you consider how many good players they were missing yesterday. I also thought they wouldn't have conceded the goal if Aimson was still on the pitch. Very good player.
The defence was good and Mannion appeared to be a calming influence. Edwards definitely my man of the match.
We were competitive throughout but very uninspiring going forward. We need Godden to have a productive season.
At last an improvement in form after 4 barren years. Hopefully we are now moving forward as a club and at the very least punching our weight.
As we move through the season it will be interesting to see how the squad develops. We need a couple of additions and hopefully we are able to reduce our numbers to enable a couple to come in before the window closes. I’m not overly fussed about a GK but I do think we need more creative intent in midfield and controversial I know but I would be looking for another striker. I don’t think TC will be consistent enough despite his endeavour. Chucks is always one stretch away from injury and although we have Miles to come back let’s be honest there is a question mark against his ability to stay injury free
Encouraging comments by NJ noticing lack of creativity and fluidity, and how that needs to change when we have to break teams down. Finally a manager that sees what we see.
A good solid start, successful teams grind out results like that by being solid and disciplined and I think what we see yesterday is a good sign and starting point.
Our pressing in the first half caused some mistakes from Wigan and seemed to panic them. Nearly lead to a goal for docherty and think we will see more of that this year.
The forwards worked hard and the centre backs of Wigan would have known they was in a game and it may well have contributed to the mistake that lead to the goal as Ahadme was relentless with his presence which may go unnoticed but his work grinds defenders down and means you have to concentrate all game.
Edward’s was excellent but also thought Coventry played really well and will be important this year.

I calmed everyone down and wasted a couple of seconds before deliberately throwing the ball away from our keeper thinking I was very cool but the ball boy knew I was a prick football fan and was already throwing the other ball to the keeper , fuck you multi ball system

my friend and his missus got their phones out, however it was all over (except for the kid being marched away) before they could get 'filming', it all happened VERY quickly

Got to be happy with 3 points away and a clean sheet - hopefully positive signs for the future.
Be interesting to see the line up for Tuesday - expecting multiple changes as 3 points against Orient has to be the priority. Looking at those that didn’t play yesterday we can still pick a strong team against Brum and these being good enough to get us into the second round
