Thanks for the heads up about Trading Places @Bedsaddick . Have already seen Die Hard, so that's another of my "Christmas films that aren't exactly Christmas films that I try to watch at Christmas" ticked off. @jimmymelrose if you're in the UK (or are able to take a brief trip there by the wonders of modern technology) it should be streamable for the next week or so here:

For me it’s just not Christmas until I’ve seen Tiffany screech “where’s my fucking coat?” At the prime minister…

Never get why Love Actually is a film to avoid. It’s a feel good film and generally good fun. Wouldn’t be Xmas without watching it at least once.

  • Beds come on, lighten up, it’s Christmas ffs.
Love Actually & now The Holiday? I’d rather watch both of those on repeat than Elf. Will Ferrell makes my teeth itch 🤢😵‍💫

Yeah I know it’s subjective but The Holiday is another good film to watch at Christmas. Not a huge fan of Jack Black but who doesn’t like Kate, Jude and Cameron?!

I love many Christmas movies as you would have seen over the years but i'd rather pull my finger nails off with pliers than ever watch Love actually again. As for The Holiday , it's just a bad film . It's all about opinions.

It probably doesn't help that i have sons and not daughters so the Likes of The Holiday are rarely on unless the wife decided she wants to watch some Christmas cheese.

I forget which version I watched but it's an absolute masterpiece. Not sure if it's suitable for Christmas though. I remember the second half is very depressing and feels like a horror film. I'd definitely not watch it at this time of the year. I watched the remake of "All Quiet on the Western Front" on New Year's Eve in 2022 and despite I thought it was a great film, it made me feel sad when I was supposed to be celebrating New Year in a happy mood! I've since then decided never to watch anything like that during the holiday😅
It does go very dark in the last third mainly thanks to Marlon Brando's screen and off screen antics.
    I love the film though.
  • I don't know, that bridge in apocalypse now looked fairly festive. What with the fairy lights and the flares.

Apocalypse Now a few decent sound bites and scenes, but an awful film that I am quite pleased not to see ever again- (with appalling over-acting by Brando), and Wonka has been on everyday for weeks!, give it a rest Sky,

Never get why Love Actually is a film to avoid. It’s a feel good film and generally good fun. Wouldn’t be Xmas without watching it at least once.

    Let me help you:
    Main plot lines consist of...
Bloke cheating on his wife with a junior at work
Man trying to get in on his best friend's 17 year old wife, secretly filming her for 'home entertainment'
Prime minister also looking to cop off with junior at work, plus changing UK foreign policy off the back of another guy wanting to do the same
Annoying Brit jetting off to have sex (yup, that's it)
Lady realising it's not possible to be a carer and have a life... ??
You can vaguely make a case that the Colin Firth bit... propose to someone you've never had a conversation with... is romantic (as well as stupid), that the Bill Nighy bit is funny-ish, and that Liam Neeson lifts any film, but overall I'd rather sit through the Crawley match again.

    Definitely listen to Bedsaddick!

I don’t mind The Holiday but Love Actually is a dreadful film. The Emma Thompson/Joni Mitchell scene is its only redeemable feature.
  • Really enjoyed The Holdovers but I'd have to go for Carlito's Way from today's picks, great film.
  • Oh and I like The Holiday!

Cheesy sure but decent - the bit with the old neighbour in LA is the best storyline in it.

I like The Holiday, it’s just an easy festive watch.

Saw the Holiday for the first time ever the other day, it was an entertaining, nice, silly film - exactly what you need at this time of year. Also, I’m a comfortably straight male, but Jude Law is astonishingly good looking in that film.

Watched This Is Christmas last night on Sky, similar to the above it was a good film which fits the bill (with lots of train action!).
