I see your point but 5 games ago it didn't matter how the opposition played, our wide players would have been passive and held back. I think that second half against Mansfield has given the team and/or Jones confidence that they can play it on the floor moreSouthbank said:

I mean that I suspect the owners have advised Jones via the conduit Gavin Carter (no longer Methven) that the style of boring hoof ball, losing games and dwindling attendances, needed a change of tactic.
So Carter effectively passing on the owner's message, even if he passed it on to Methven, Rodwell or Scott.
Maybe it didn't happen, maybe the owners were happy with Jones, the hoof ball, the results and the dwindling crowds and haven't said anything.
Nobody would be more pleased than me if we have changed our style to a more passing game, but I think we need to see a few more games before we can be sure it is a deliberate shift and not just because of the weakness of the opposition.3 -

My twopence worth. Leaburn is getting better game by game and played very well today. Fantastic pass for Campbell to score, and Campbell took it very well. Berry and Docherty were very very good. Long may that continue. Small and Campbell great as wide players. Jones magnificent as usual, and Coventry did what Coventry does as usual. Overall a great day. COYR.14

That was really, really good today.Tactically the split 5-3-2 / 4-2-3-1 worked perfectly. There were strong performances all over the pitch.

PWR. Just read the match thread all the way through. How does Callum manage to report a goal before anyone else? And secondly, a few on that thread moaned about Hylton on the bench. I thought it was a smart move. Over the years look how many ex players have scored against us and a lot of the time ex players who couldn’t hit a cows arse with a banjo for us. Roles reversed today. I’d bet on Northampton Life they’d be comments how shit Hylton was for them and hadn’t scored a goal for them but therefore bound to score against them. And so it came to pass. Good call by NJ.
Lets hope todays result and performance can be a catalyst for the second half of the season but this is Charlton Athletic we are talking about so won’t get carried away, yet. Beat Cambridge and Crawley, as we should, and at least a point v Wycombe and then I may start to believe.8 -

That number was reduced to below 60 against both Lincoln and Mansfield. The league average is in the 60-70 range.
Today was our lowest total of the season so far (46).
Regardless of opposition there’s been a clear shift of direction since that Crawley result.18 -

I feel fortunate to be such a simple minded fellow. I am still basking in the enjoyment of a 5-0 away win and the type of performance we have been crying out for.
As to the forensic analysis of anything that was not executed to perfection by any particular player, the post match words of the manager or the expression on a young player's face, it's such a blessing to not give a shit.14 -
Reluctantly drove the troops to Northampton, boffin and little shit had ratted by Friday afternoon and Peter Kay was only in cos my nephew wanted to go , petrol head is always gonna want to go ….mrs said she’d drive if I didn’t but I took the reins meaning she could sort Christmas shit out .
Boffin was on the piss Friday and his mate (Charlton fan ) said he’d jump in our fun bus and that persuaded little shit to join and make us the magnificent 7 for our journey to Northampton.

players I’ve always liked who have been pony Luke Berry a front footed player in a sea of crabs , Docherty just for his Jock accent and Tyreece for being positive .
Dochertys celebration felt a bit 🥩y with the pointing at the captains armband and attitude but you can feel the frustration turning to relief for fans and players alike cos we have been utter shit and we’re hopefully turning a corner .
Great atmosphere which is the only way it can be with early goals and a 0-5 win

Not much to add, excellent performance from individuals and as a team, hopefully a sign of us finally moving in the right footballing direction. Mixed it up well and played to players strengths,
Got to be the first time we've played with proper midfield balance and wing play! Having the option out wide just creates a much better dynamic, moves the ball and team up the pitch much more fluid then hopeless punts straight up the middle. Persist with the shape and style and start to build on it.
Yes, Northampton were terrible but we've played bad teams and looked no better than them before.
Leaburn, very good display after some poor performances hopefully he starts to kick on again now
Docherty - Superb. The player we thought we were getting, playing his natural game.
Lloyd Jones makes such a massive difference at the back!

Outstanding as a team, but fantastic individual performances I thought in particular from Small, Berry, Docherty and T Campbell. Hopefully boosts some confidence we can build on in the home games coming up. Northampton really, really, really bad.

Having had a night to let this sink in, I have mixed emotions about this result and the performance. Yes, we looked sharper than we have all season and put in a proper shift and made a poor Northants team look even worse than they probably are, but part of me is frustrated that it's taken until the end of december for it to happen.
Finally, we ditch the hoofball and play with some width at the top of the park and low & behold, this happens. I just hope Jones has also seen the light and perseveres with this.
Along with many others, I have been calling for his head to roll and despite yesterday's result (but more importantly, the performance) he still needs to convince me that this was not a false dawn and we won't revert back to the painful displays we've witnessed up until this. Finally we got to see what playing on the front foot actually looks like.
This was a proper team performance and the first time this season I've not been screaming for **** to get subbed, as he's having a mare. Every single one of that starting 11 was on point.
We don't expect a cricket score every game and we will accept that we will draw or lose some games, but these guys have now set the bar and shown us what they are capable of producing.

Aside from the overall performance is was great to see goals contributed from the forwards and midfield. If memory serves me right even Mitchell got a cross in. If we can build in this , and unlike last year, we will need our midfield helping Leaburn and co.I also expect this is the team NJ sees during training. We don't want the other one back at all.2
