He was in goal when I first started going to The Valley with my Dad. He was, as I recall, a very decent keeper and much loved by the home fans. RIP Charlie.
Loved him. Went to his cafe in East Greenwich after he retired. I can still recall in my minds eye an astonishing save he once made at the uncovered end. I think he then played for and managed Bolton, and came back to play at the Valley when they beat us and he played very well. RIP one of our best ever goalkeepers who had a towering character. RIP Charlie, condolences to all your family and friends.
I had the pleasure of couple of rounds of golf with Charlie in the last few years alongside my father. Charlie was his all-time hero as a player and was, without doubt, one of the nicest guys I’ve met. Such a gentleman.
Sad news, my first goalie I saw play for us. A legend and a larger than life character. Always chatted to the fans, which I assumed was normal at the time. RIP Charlie, you Charlton Legend you.
Saw my first game in 1968 and he was a key member of the great 68/69 team that got me hooked (as seemingly it did so many).
A really good keeper and great character, I'm sure I've got tucked away somewhere an interview he did in Shoot magazine saying how he smoked a cigarette thrown at him by some rival fan!

Back in the day, football players used to earn a bit of extra money by taking games lessons at schools. Charlie duly turned up at Eltham Green (as did Dickie Plumb another time) but his "coaching" consisted mainly of leaning against a goalpost, fag going, offering the occasional piece of encouragement.
It was said back in the day that Charlton had had the best English goalkeeper never to win a cap: Sam Bartram and the best Scottish goalkeeper to never win a cap: Charlie Wright. RIP
Larger than life character both on and off the pitch. Would often converse with fans behind the goal….he was known as a happy chappy by one and all. RIP….Charlie….RIP
My memory is failing me, I seem to remember watching him for years, yet his last game with us was apparently in 1971 when I was just 10. Who took over from him until Nicky Johns arrived (who is the next goalie I remember?). My dad did mention someone who had an enormous throw who I vaguely remember.
RIP Charlie. Bellotti was the guy with the long throw , I think he replaced Charlie. A big mistake to let Charlie leave.

So sad to hear this. Started going in 70,71 season so Charlie was my first keeper. Used to stand at the front of the now Jimmy Seed and me Dad used to chat to him like a old friend.

Tony Burns was the keeper with the long throw, he played a few games for us in the 68/69 & 69/70 seasons.

I never saw him play, he spent his later years in Deal & would often play golf with my BIL.
