Charlie Wright RIP

Oh no. Very sad news. A great character. I think Charlie and Deano are the two best goalies I have seen play for Charlton (never saw Bartram play).
Recently came across a recording of a Millwall vs Charlton game at the Den. Think it was around 1969/70 and ended 1-1 with Ray Crawford getting his very good goal you sometimes see on Charlton highlights. If I remember Charlie got into a bit of a contretemps with Barry Kitchener.0 -
Good to see fans have so many remember the man, saw he regularly the I went with my friends from Springfield Grove. Charlie had a great relationship with the fans, or so it seemed. He often would react to comments by the fans, which of course made him popular. Never meet him personally, but felt he would be happy to chat to you in the street if you met him . R I P Charlie.0

Very sad.

My memory is failing me, I seem to remember watching him for years, yet his last game with us was apparently in 1971 when I was just 10. Who took over from him until Nicky Johns arrived (who is the next goalie I remember?). My dad did mention someone who had an enormous throw who I vaguely remember.0 -

Bellotti was the guy with the long throw , I think he replaced Charlie. A big mistake to let Charlie leave.3 -
The first keeper that I really remember. A proper character was Charlie who would often chat with the fans behind the goal. Didn’t he let one in through his legs once? Legend .. RIP Charlie0

The through the legs I believe only happened once, at the covered end at home to Ipswich Town.
The reputation stuck, but he really could play seriously well, the mistake was a one off.0 -
RIP Charlie - one of the game’s truly great characters.
As a youngster, I used to generally stand at the red railings on the halfway line but went down the front of the terrace behind the open end for the league game against Palace in March 1969. A real ‘4-pointer’ (as they used to be) but the tension surrounding the game didn’t affect Charlie, as he casually chatted to supporters behind the goal throughout the entire match. I subsequently read that he was well known for it and, as a result, a bit of a favourite at away venues.0 -

A very good goalie. At one time there was talk of him being called up for Scotland, although it never came to pass.0 -
I'm not sure if he was before or after Charlie but the guy with the long throw was Peter Whiting a Kiwi who could throw it from our area to the edge of the other area0

An article from a few years back recalled last November. I think it is a great read.

A lovely goalie and my first to remember when I first visited the Valley.
Dont get players like Charlie anymore.
Bit upset nothing about him on the Club website so far... I wonder if they're will be a minutes silence tomorrow? There should be after that debacle with the dearly departed Kevin Nolan.
Shameful and perhaps it highlights that theres no real fans except Carter that understand us.0 -
Charlton legend, RIP Charlie. Hopefully he will be remembered before the Wycombe game.0

Sat with him when Darren Clarke won the open at Sandwich, a brilliant afternoon full of stories about some of my favourite players. RIP Charlie you were a legend at Charlton.0

Stalwart in the 68/69 season. Saw him save a penalty at Oxford then Alan Campbell scored the winner for us through their goalie's legs. During the game a retaining wall collapsed - not through crowd violence and no injuries luckily. Just the Manor Ground falling apart.0

Never saw him play but his legend lived for longer than his career with us.

Love him. RIP Charlie.1

A bit before my time, my first game was in 1972. Sounds like he was a Wright character, RIP Charlie.0

The first Charlton keeper I can remember clearly at Charlton. A real character and a very good keeper in a brilliant side. Football and life was so much simpler then.Rest in Peace, Charlie.1

The Palace away cup win is one of my best memories because after the game my brother and I caught the 75 bus back to Charlton and went in the Fish and chip shop when who should come in but Charlie. The Palace penalty had been the opposite end to us so we were unsure what had happened with the miss. We asked Charlie if he had saved it. He said "No it hit the post" but then grinned and said "but I had it covered."
Great goalkeeper and true character.
RIP Charlie.5 -
So sorry to hear this. He was one of my first Charlton heroes, and was the keeper when I first started going.
The fact that he was a great character shouldn't detract from the fact that he was also a great keeper.
RIP Charlie and thanks for the memories.1 -
Before my time but one of those characters that seemed to come back into the Charlton fold when we returned to the valley. RIP.0

Very very sad news, he was one of the first players who I worshipped when I started my love of this mad football club - he was a good keeper but a funny lovely man. Had the pleasure of meeting him outside the Valley in our early Premiership days, always smiling, sad news - RIP Charlie ❤️0

Rest in peace, Charlie. Dad always told the story of bringing me to my first match at The Valley and as we left I took his hand and said, “The goalie was good, wasn’t he?” At that point Dad knew he had a football fan for a daughter. The precise details of my first match are lost in the mists of time - definitely early 70s but may have been just after Charlie, though I like to think it was him.
