  • Tony Burns only played 10 games for Charlton.
I'm surprised a few remember a long throw.
Tony Burns, an English goalkeeper who played during the 1960s and 1970s, was known more for his traditional goalkeeping skills than for his throwing ability. There's no widely documented evidence or anecdotes specifically highlighting a long throw as a key part of his game. His career, including stints at clubs like Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Crystal Palace, focused primarily on his goalkeeping duties rather than extraordinary distribution techniques.
It was definitely Tony Burns who had the incredible throw. He didn't play long at Charlton but to this day I have never seen anybody like him. His throws were not only unbelievably long but very accurate. Charlie was the better goalie though, and a really nice guy.
Yes definitely Tony Burns, it's the only reason I remember him, his throwing, in preference to kicking was unique and intriguing to a young kid like me at the time.
I thought John Dunn was a very good shot stopper and made some spectacular diving saves, and looked the part with his long flowing hair.
But Charlie was a great all round keeper with a terrific personality.
  • I remember Charlie getting pelted with sweets following a misdemeanour by a large away crowd at the Valley.  Charlie gathered them up and re-distributed  them to the kids at the front.  They ended up chanting his name
  • RIP Charlie, my 1st Charlton legend, we all seem to remember how he chatted with us behind the goal.
Does anyone know where and when the funeral is?
  • So very sad to hear this news, I was always happy to see him between the sticks.
RIP Charlie and thank you for the memories which I’ll always treasure.
I’ll be thinking of him at the Valley today.
My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

No, doubt it has been arranged yet.

If I hear I'll post it on here if appropriate.
  • Just caught up with this.

Very sad news. I remember the ball through his legs episode but also a tremendous “double” save in front of the covered end. A real character who often engaged with the fans during a game.

    RIP.
  • A real character and hero to all Addicks...RIP Sir Charlie Wright
  • I sort of remember him saving s shot against the post which rebounded back hit him on the head and went in :( , possibly a 4-2 defeat by Blackburn Rovers.

  • A legend was our Charlie. RIP.
  • What a character and a good goalkeeper as well. RIP Charlie

  •  RIP charlie , one of our own
  • One of our true greats, always stood out for me. I used to play in goal at my primary and always wanted to be a Charlie Wright or Peter the 'Cat' Bonetti, RIP Charlie!
  • RIP Big man.
  • Goodbye Charlie and thanks for the memories. A great custodian between the sticks who always had time for a bit of banter with the fans.

In goal when I first watched the Addicks. Great character. RIP Charlie
  • I vividly recall John Dunn throwing more than kicking and easily reaching the half way line with his throw. Maybe they both had a long throw?
    Apologies to Charlie Wright RIP.
Tony Burns made his debut 1969 evening game home to Blackburn, we won 4-0. The reason why we remember it ? Because we were there.
  • Was there an announcement from the club yesterday at the game. I didn’t see or hear anything, I hope the club ain’t including in next remembrance game.
  • Before my time but rest in peace Charlie

Supporters will have the opportunity to pay tribute to Charlie Wright ahead of the Addicks' home game against Reading on Saturday, January 4th.

  • I can't quite remember why but Charlie and Liverpools keeper Tommy Lawrence were often talked about in the same breathe.  Lawrence was also known as the flying pig not sure if there was a link with that.

I see he will be commemorated on memorial day.  I hope that they at the very least put his picture up before we get into the main "celebration"  of those we have lost.  My preference would have been holding back Charlie's celebration to the next home game, albeit a few weeks later.

I think Lawrence was known as a keeper who also spoke to opposition fans.

I remember asking him who was going to win today, when he was in goal for Tranmere in an fa cup third round tie. He rep!ied "Charlton" , which surprised me! It ended in a scoreless draw and in a cup shock we lost 4-2 in the replay on a quagmire of a pitch. Charlton swamped, I believe was the mirror headline.
  • From that great team of the sixties, we still have Peter Reeves, Alan Campbell, Brian Kinsey, Keith Peacock and our manager Eddie Firmani; well I certainly hope so. Those were great times.
    RIP Charlie.

Would be nice if The Club were to commemorate Charlie's Charlton career with a statue outside the main reception to stand alongside Sam Bartram...👍
