  • First keeper I saw (though I was too young to remember). RIP Charlie.
  • A proper character and my first Charlton hero as a lad. RIP Charlie.
  • Too early for me but knew the name RIP Charlie .

Jeff Wood was my first keeper before Nicky Johns
  • RIP Charlie.
  • One of my first favourite players loved the way he brought his knees up when catching the ball to keep others away RIP Charlie
  • Proper Charlton legend as well as a very good goalkeeper .. R I P Charlie
  • RIP Charlie. One of 70s favorites when I first started supporting Charlton
  • Posting again as just had a memory of him treating a injured player as sponge man at The Valley when we played Bolton.
He also managed them I think.
  • That's very sad. A great character and a good keeper as well. RIP Charlie.
  • Words fail. Marvellous memories. Bless you, big man. Rest peacefully.

  • Very sad news…a true Charlton legend. RIP Charlie and thanks for the memories.
  • Hong Kong player of the year.  Let goals in through his legs. Chatted to the crowd. Was my first regular goalie and such a character.  Loved you Charlie.  RIP.
  • My Dad’s favourite Charlton player when he was a kid.

    RIP Charlie.

    RIP.

My memory is failing me, I seem to remember watching him for years, yet his last game with us was apparently in 1971 when I was just 10. Who took over from him until Nicky Johns arrived (who is the next goalie I remember?). My dad did mention someone who had an enormous throw who I vaguely remember.
Mostly Jeff Wood, but we had John Dunn, Graham Tutt, Mike Franklin, and others, though the one with the throw was possibly John Vaughn?
  • The first keeper I saw in Charlton colours. A real character and a very good keeper too.

    RIP
  • Like many on here he was in goal when I started supporting Charlton back in the 60s.
A great keeper and a real character.
He was also a big part in my all time favourite Charlton sides.
    Great times and great memories.
    RIP Sir Charlie Wright.

    RIP Charlie.
Bellotti was the guy with the long throw , I think he replaced Charlie. A big mistake to let Charlie leave.
I believe it was Tony Burns withb that throw

perhaps they were all long throwers at the club because my brother said it was a South African called Uytenbogard or something.

Surely it was John Dunn who could throw the ball to the half way line and did regularly?
Dunn used to throw more often than kick, because he threw it further and more accurately.
It was definitely Dunn, he replaced Charlie in 1971 from Villa and made over 100 appearances for us.
Bellotti only made 14 appearances before being quickly sold to Southend.
RIP Charlie my first Charlton goalie as well.
  • RIP. God bless you super Addick.
  • His playing days were well before my time but met him once at an EKA meeting and spoke to him most of the night. I had no idea who he was when I first spoke to him but he was the nicest bloke and proper gentleman and soon became my favourite guest I met at these events. He was just like us, a real man of the people who had time for everyone. Will always remember with fondness.

    RIP Charlie.
  • Sleep tight, Charlie.
  • Absolute hero from that fine team. Great character and a pretty decent goalie too. Remember used to get taken down to a school somewhere in Greenwich one evening a week for coaching with him. Afraid my lack of heading ability drove him to a foul mouthed rant (which in those days involved no worse than the expletive "bloody"). Feels like a big chunk of childhood lost.
